Honestly the awe with which this gentleman seems to possess is heart warming to observe. To have this intimate a platform with Dylan is a dream come true. I first saw him in 1997 and he was my last pre-covid concert in November 2019. God bless the never ending tour

His lyrics are poetic. The hilarious thing js that when he's just trying to speak in public he can barely get a sentence out with stumbling through. An improv man he is not.

This blows me away and if you're patient enough to read my story you'll understand why. I wrote the following account of a very similar experience that happened to me in 1965. I posted it to my Facebook timeline on it's 50th anniversary on Dec. 17, 2015. Here it is: December 17, 1965. Fifty year ago today, December 17, 1965, I was ordered to appear at the Los Angeles Induction Center to have my physical exam in preparation to be Drafted into the Vietnam War; a war that I opposed. My story with the Draft is long, and messy, and I'm not going to go into details right now, but I will just say that this particular encounter reached a climax, when I confronted the Marine Sergeant, who was trying to falsify my records to shanghai me. I was 10 days short of 19 and the Marine was probably around 30. He was a real hard ass and very proud in his dress uniform. I caught him lying, red-handed and this pissed him off. After an warm exchange of viewpoints he said, "Don't fucking argue with me kid! Are you going to take this fucking physical, or not?! His face was less than two feet from mine, and his spittle was flying at me, in angry droplets. I replied on the fly, as I ran down the hall, "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" I saw a sign that said "Fire Escape", with an arrow pointing left, towards an open window. I went through it and stepped on the weighted/counterbalanced ladder that lowered with my weight, and took me to my freedom. I put both feet on the ground, in a parking lot, then heard his voice call down to me; "We'll have you back here, you Son of a Bitch!" I looked up, but didn't answer. I just ran for my car and drove home to Lakewood. Later that night I went to see Bob Dylan in concert ,at the Long Beach auditorium, down by the Nu-Pike. I had bought a seat weeks before, and had painted an oil portrait of Dylan with a palette knife. I went to the auditorium early to give it to him. I had a skin-head hair cut and wore a blue and black herringbone sport coat with pink dress shirt and blue classic Levis. I went to the ticket booth and spoke to an older man, who was wearing a security guard uniform. I said, "I have a painting for Bob Dylan, and I'd like to give it t him." To my surprise, he simply said, "OK, follow me." We walked through the front door and down the center aisle, to the stage, and then walked up a few steps on the left side of the stage, then across the stage to some steps going down, behind the stage. He pointed at a closed door and said, "I think he's in there." and walked away. Soooo… I knocked on the door. A very nervous, (paranoid even) voice suspiciously sputtered out, "Whaaa? Who's there? What do you want?" I answered, "My name is Grady, and I have a painting for Bob Dylan." "Slip it under the door, man." I heard lots of feet shuffling hurriedly away, as I replied, "It's in a frame. It won't fit under the door." "OK…OK.. wait a minute, man." A few minutes later, the door cracked open a couple of inches and a guy peeks out (I think it may have been Bobby Neuwirth) and he grabs the painting and says, "Thanks man, I'll give it to him." Then he quickly shuts the door. OK… so I'm standing backstage, alone; half-stoked and half-puzzled…. now what? I just walked back to the front row, center seat, and waited for the show to start. I was the only person there. I sat there for just a few minutes, before Dylan and The Band walked on stage. They were doing sound checks and a little rehearsal. I decided it was FOR ME. My reward for speaking truth to power, earlier in the day. I sat there, alone and Beaming, front row, center seat, as Dylan and The Band serenaded me. When they finished, I went to my reserved seat and watched the ushers get their assignments and take folks to their seats. A young girl sat down next to me. I had to tell her what had just happened to me. She was blown away… then she blew me away, when she said, "I'm supposed to bring the band soft drinks at intermission. You can go with me and help." When intermission came, we went backstage together and delivered the drinks. The guy I gave the painting to, looked at me and said, "Whooo are you, man?" I reminded him that I was Grady, a fan of Dylan's, and had brought him a painting. "Oooh… that painting… man, he really digs it. He's looking at it right now, in his dressing room." The girl and I went back to our seats and I never got to meet Dylan, but I was still Super Stoked. After the concert, I went on stage and saw that the roadies had put my painting, on top of the grand piano to pack for the road. I will never forget 12/17/1965….even 50 years later.

+ghraydon wallick Now that is a story! My friends and I got to sit in the back seat of T-Bone Burnett's rented Lincoln Continental and talk with him for about 10 minutes after one of his gigs back in the mid 80's, but what you had was karma from heaven. The only thing that could make that story better is if you had married the girl. Glad things turned out for you though. Kind of curious about that messy draft story!
@ghraydon

+erestube I wonder how many people have had a similar experience. I first saw Dylan in 1964 singing alone in the Wilson High School gymnasium, also in Long Beach. I was a 17 year old surfer kid, and an older friend had an extra ticket because his date stood him up. I had never heard of Dylan but my friend had lived in Greenwich Village and knew about him from the coffee houses. He played me his first two albums and I decided to go. My mom's house was across the street from the gym so it was really handy. That night my young life took a quantum leap forward. He open my eyes and my head to a whole other dimension, and I've been living there ever since. The Draft story ended well, after many agonizing months. They came to realize that a kid who says "NO" to direct orders and runs down the fire escape wasn't going to be worth the effort. Giving me a gun would have been a mistake.

Awesome story, ghraydon. I had my draft physical about two years after you, for a war I also opposed, at the infamous Oakland Induction Center (thankfully, I was never called upon to serve). I still have some "interesting" memories of that day, but they are nowhere near as cool as your encounter with Dylan and his entourage.

Kind of ironic isn’t it, like everything with Bob? I’ve seen him play to 3K as well as 90K amd sound uninspired, but hear he sounds completely likely a master interpreter of song. The phrasing, emotion and groove, all completely connected. A true gift. LG

My favorite Dylan video of all time. He’s facing any performers greatest fear of playing to an empty room, and he treats it as a sold-out show. And yet, he still finds the opportunity to workshop particular songs, songs he holds dear to himself.
@ratso8860
@ratso8860 2 жыл бұрын
Well...they do a soundcheck before every show...where I'm sure they workshop songs...or just play whatever moves them. Either way, it's a beautiful thing to behold. I went to see Bob in Santa Rosa, CA in 2006. We drove in right behind Bob's bus. About a half hour later, a handful of us sat by the doors and listened to the soundcheck. The venue was basically a metal barn so there wasn't much in between the doors and the main room. That was pretty cool. I don't think they played any of the songs at the concert that they played at the soundcheck.

Oh you mean unlike this "journalist" who harasses and calls everyone, but especially those who lack a big media platform from which to defend themselves, with a view to the right of the ultra extreme left one he occupies, a polluting fascist nazi misogynistic gay-hating xenophobe (while he makes decent money painting targets on the backs of anyone and everyone who does not agree 100% with his stately sanctioned opinions; before going home to his exclusive ultra-white neighbourhood at the end of the day)? That's the sort of neutrality I lack? Well gosh darn it. "Biased" pfft. You're probably too dumb to even understand what a moron you come off as... Edit: oh and to give a proper reply to you OP, since the first one wasn't, this was called "experiment alone/lonely" where a few media personalities in Sweden got to try out a few things that are usually enjoyed in crowds. Here's a longer clip: vimeo.com/206989320 It's truly a shame this cockroach didn't get to try out being the victim of a mass murder all alone instead. Marko Lehtosalo got to enjoy the comedy stylings of Ann Westin on his own...that's quite possibly worse.
