Starting to think this is less about science and more about being drunk EDIT: For all the "um, actually"s, yes, because of the Leidenfrost effect, you _can_ handle liquid nitrogen without gloves without repercussion. You can also light your hand on fire without repercussions. You _should_ not do either.

Basic chemistry teaches us that fire can only exist if theres a fuel heat and oxygen, water takes away the heat from the fire so it cant exist anymore because the heat part of the 3 fire criterias is away. Considering this, the liquid Nitrogen would just take the heat from the fire and would extinguish it.

The Leidenfrost effect would protect your hands for a few seconds. You can dip your hand in a vat of the stuff and be fine, it takes a bit more than a splash to do any real damage.

3:40 grabbing a regular glass container (ie not a vacuum flask) full of liquid nitrogen with your bare hand, because it's about to tip over. What could possibly go wrong!? Especially when your other hand is sticking a 1k deg knife in said container.. I don't care what people write in the comments about the Leidenfrost effect, you need safety gear for this. Also, this experiment should be done outside. Apart from the obvious risk of frostbite, if very cold glass comes into contact with a hot object it can shatter violently.

+DavidB1001 I've seen glass break because boiling hot tea was poured in it, and it wasn't super-thin. The stuff tea glasses are made of is a different type from the stuff wine glasses are made of, difference isn't just the thickness. This looks like a pickling jar, which are not intended to hold boiling hot liquids. It might even be plastic as far as I can tell. Btw there's a slight chance the knife might break, the heat and cold will induce stress on the blade, and it loses flexibility if cooled. If it gets stuck in the jar and bent with enough force, it might chip or crack. Chips of razor-sharp steel flying around + bare hands = not good. Interesting you bring up oxygen, I looked up safety precautions for liquid nitrogen, apparently after it's evaporated there's residual oxygen which can ingite organic material. No explanation of the mechanics, I guess the liquid air distillation process doesn't yield pure nitrogen.. Anyway if there's some sugar residue in the jar, and the nitro boils off, sticking a 1k degree knife in there might yield interesting results.. hmm maybe I'm giving the uploader ideas, so I'll end here :D
