Experimenting with Acrylic Pouring Blow Techniques for Blooms

I decided to have another go at acrylic pour blooms. I have a few blow techniques I wanted to try. Using my mouth to blow, using a hairdryer and using a straw. I think looking back on it they all have there benefits. You get a different amount of control with each. I think I need to do the experiment again!

I love this comparison Fiona. I’m just starting experimenting with blooms and I tend to blown straight down and out and I use a smaller hairdryer but like you an experimenting at the moment and love your outcome. I prefer the one on the right, love the swirl and cells and depth of colour. Looks like you have broach cells too. Beautiful, both of them ❤

I applaud your perseverance and learning while you share as you are experimenting. Unfortunately I cannot make anything using a hairdryer. I’ve tried a few times and gave up. I don’t know if it’s the consistency of the paint, or the hairdryer, or both. So I’ve opted for the straw. Your pieces came up prettier than it would seem. I prefer the one on the right. The pattern is lovely and the vibrancy of the colours is gorgeous! I’ve watched other artists using that technique (ie, blowing first and then using the hairdryer), and I wondered at first if there was too much white paint in the centre and/or you weren’t blowing outwards enough.

I think your second one is beautiful!! I can't blow a bloom because of my progressive glasses, but if you had of used the hairdryer on the second in the middle or kept using your straw to blow through your white CA more would have come out if you waited a bit. I am going to start my journey on Blooms today. I'll mix some colours today and let them sit overnite. I think for your first blooms especially on a bigger canvas, you did awesome!! People usually start with coaster size. I suggest you keep the thickness though, I've heard it keeps the cells intact better.

Fiona, I love that you experiment on video. I’m also learning and just finished the course a couple weeks ago. Is your pillow paint a tad thicker than the colors you put down? It’s so hard to tell on camera, but it looked a little thin. Using your consistency chart, I believe the colors should be about 1.5. I’m going to give it another go today. In the states, our pillow paint is too thin, so I’ve had to let mine sit open to thicken a bit. Good luck!

Thanks Katie, you could be right. I did thin my pillow down a bit. I was just reading something that said the pillow should be thicker than the colours and cell activator should be the thinnest. I don't know. Will have to try again 😉

Maybe trying a smaller hair dryer with a diffuser would work better.

Maybe try blowing your colors over the white before blowing out with your blow dryer.
