In this video I show and discuss a couple of experiments I did with starting plants on clay pebbles for going into hydroponic set ups. I also conclude with my final thought on the best method I have found. A shallow container works best so the ones that sink can push off the bottom and will be able to grow to to the top. I use 1 teaspoon of maxi gro per gallon for my starts.

Thank you very much! I consider that a great compliment. I love Bob Ross! Glad your enjoying the channel. I have a few hydroponic videos coming soon I am just waiting for the plants to mature so I can show the end result as well as the start. I also have a micro greens timelapse that I'm working on and think that will be ready next week some time.

Did you ever use toilet paper? How about a think layer of cotton wool or some sort of fabric with large mesh to hold the seeds on top but still allow roots to penetrate down?

I never tried it but a piece of paper towel would probably work well and keep you from loosing seeds that fall between and sink.

Question: White stuff appeared on the clay pebbles. After transplanting the babies, I rinsed off the pebbles and then baked them for about 40 minutes between 350 - 450. The white stuff is still on some of the pebbles. Should I be concerned? Throw them out?

Hi Pam. That is mineral deposits from the nutrients it will not harm anything. You will also find it on the walls of you growing container over time. You did a great job cleaning and sterilizing them. I usually just wash them with soap and water, rinse and dry. I have been lucky with that so far.
