If you are from the U.S. and an employee, or known as a W2 worker, the visa will NOT be approved unless your company has an office/ branch in Spain and pays social security directly 😉. In other words, you must be either a self-employed person and / or have your own company paying social security directly to Spain. Keep in mind that timing is critical for spanish taxes as you will NOT want to pay taxes for an entire year in Spain on ALL assets worldwide! Do not move to Spain and remain within the country for 183 days or more. Keep in mind, U.S. citizens have only 90 days when trying to move abroad to get approval for the DNV, and it may take 6 to 8 months for visa approval. By the way, you cannot exit Spain if visa is still being worked on w an extension. Very important, immigration lawyers are NOT tax experts in Spain!!!

Very helpful video! If I'm self employed, does the end date of my contract matter? Let's say the contract length is 1 year but it ends 6 months from now. Does this affect the visa length?

What Marina was referring to there is that if a spouse wanted to be an autónomo then they could, but there’s no obligation to do that. They could also seek employment or not work as well as I understood it. Of course though the income requirements increase slightly for a second applicant. Marina will be able to clarify for you 😊

According to spanish government webpages the minimum wage for one person is not that high.

It's about €16k annually (€2.2k over 14 pay periods) at the time of writing this comment (source: La Moncloa). So a single applicant would need to be making around €32k annually. Each person on the application increases the total by about €7k if I'm not mistaken.

Can you use dividends for proof of income? If so how much history do you need?

Good question - officially I’m not sure but I spoke to someone who said that by having savings in the bank she believe it her application, so maybe the same applies with dividends. Hope this helps!

Hey so, my employer has said I can work in another country if I wish (I am full time employed UK) What is confusing me is - when my UK payroll process my pay do I pay 2 lots of tax???

You should speak to a tax professional about this - normally no as Spain and the UK have a double taxation treaty but a tax expert will be able to explain the specifics. Hope this helps!

Definitely speak with a tax professional about this to understand the specifics of your situation, but my understanding is that is that you will pay tax based on your tax residency and any tax paid in the one country can offset tax paid in the other where applicable since Spain and the U.K. have a bilateral agreement.
