A few things to add: We have the ryusou, a lighter weight version of the kimono, perfect for the hot and humid weather. It's made from joufu, a high quality hemp material. Also, we have bashofu, made from banana fibre. Soba noodles made from scratch is probably the ultimate Okinawan food in Okinawa aside from pork of course but it's still in the recipe. For living long... to have friends and get together, garden, let stress go, have fun and keep moving is essential just as much as diet. I'm a hafu Uchinanchu (Okinawan) American raised in the mainland USA and now living in Okinawa. Mahalo for making this, I really enjoyed it.

Aloha and Haitai! Mahalo and Nifee Deebiru Makani for the lovely talk story. I just wanted to say I am not an expert in Japanese and Okinawan culture in Hawaii - still have a lot to learn!

"Okinawan outfits" came out around 1970, and started using the name "Kariyushi-Wear" from 1993, so I'm guessing Aloha shirts have a longer history. (I checked the Okinawan Prefecture official website)

I've also heard that Aloha shirts came from Okinawans. They used to make shirts from ladies yukata.

Captain James Cook and Christian missionaries' attitude towards the Native Hawai'ians was like: you weren't allowed to speak Olelo Hawai'i at school & at government buildings, only English; you only could speak Hawai'ian at home.
