I’ve done my fair share of soldering as a ham radio operator. I’ve learned a few techniques watching this which I’ll employ. Nowhere close to this detail and I never knew this level of soldering existed. Amazing.

The video from paceworldwide shows how to do this in 3 steps . 1-Tin the wire and trim to length 2-Insert some twisted up solder into the hole of the cup - push it down the into the hole until it bottoms out and trim off level with the top of the hole . 3- Heat the cup and as the solder melts insert the wire and wait for a second and remove the iron and let cool . Perfect joint every time .

T'occupe pas, le mec fait les pires chose en termes de soudures : il laisse son fer chauffer beaucoup trop, nettoie la pointe de son fer avec une eponge mouillée (ce qui abime la pointe et l'oxyde rapidement) et te dis "d'enlever l'or du connecteur" alors qu'il faut jamais faire cela ^^ l'or il est pas la pour rien et ce mec n'a rien compris ^^ va donc voir EEVBlog (aussi en anglais mais il me semble que les sous titres youtube marchent bien sur ses videos) il a fait une serie de tutos qui sont excellents y'a aussi CYROB (en francais).

This is ridiculous, even if it's for avionics, how this guy does it is actually ridiculous, no technician (in the avionics) will ever do this, I saw a comment saying everithing this guy has done wrong (too much heat, flux being useless because the heat is so hugh it vaporizes itself immediately) and for gods sake : never use a sponge it's the worst way to clean something that is hot ! Use stelwool or something similar, not the wet sponge because it basically rapes the tip of the iron and make it oxydize way faster !

I do think to add reliability, that lead free solder should be dumped, then a return to a good Tin Lead based alloy........... I just hate the way that lead free stuff goes grey when it freezes.

just because its not shiny you don't like it ? That's not enough to drop lead-free. If lead-free is a thing in the first place it's because the manufacturing process expunged a lot of lead in the nature and in natural reserves of water which could lead (no pun intended) to severe illinesses for the inhabitants of the area deserved by the contaminated reserve.

Good question. I was taught it allows for some flexibility of the connection. Less risk of fracturing the solder joint.

They remove the gold because otherwise it dissolves into the solder and makes the joint less ductile than it would otherwise be. Brittle solder joints is a big concern in spaceflight and aviation because it makes it more vulnerable to cracking in high vibration environments.

@@atomicskull6405 Exactly. At a defense contractor I worked at, we had to do this with every single solder joint that was gold plated. In a production facility, they would have someone that specifically removed the gold from each solder cup on each connector being used on a particular job. That would be their job all day. Then those connectors were sent down the line to have someone terminate them with the correct wires. Also, many times you can order them from the manufacturer pre-tinned. Then you just had to remove the solder from each cup to remove the gold contamination.

shit, I had no idea you are supposed to strip gold from these things. I don't do avionics but I never saw it done industrially either, but maybe its something I missed. Thanks for the video. That might be a way to reduce gold embrittlement.

I challenge the comments to find another video that even comes close to this level of detail and explanation. There are no other soldering videos that can compare to this 4 part series. Everyone knows you can do this with spit and sweat from your armpit, but that doesn't make the best cable possible or one that will last. I for one do no think it is worth bragging that you can make the worst cable possible and your boss will be satisfied. No wonder we haven't been to the moon in a while.

How many of those friggen wipes must he go through if he is doing the wiring for a space mission? The wipes are massive compared to what hes working on...surely you could cut 1 wipe into 4 and it would still probably be overkill?? That process blows..and is incomplete anyway - he didn't clean the wick first and therefore potentially contaminated the join. Would it still hold? Yes. Better than any join done by any other youtuber or person in these comments. Is it 'technically' the best possible join? No. Lol. Fail. 😝

I still didn't understand the part where you removed the extra solder from inside the terminal. I've never seen that practiced that in India... here, we just roll the wick, then place it into the terminal, touch the hot iron on the outside of the terminal, and it's done... but your technique seems much faster and cleaner.

It most definitely isn't. Aviation does it this way too (virtually the same process). Bigger the blob, the better the job, don't cut it when you are 30,000 feet, or heading into space. It is amazing to watch folks that do this everyday and can do it amazingly fast. Truly an art to behold.

sure we do, i did it on a New Horizons solder joint, but i only needed J-STD cert for that one. Nasa cert was required for the apogee thruster fuel and ox valves i helped build

that's total BS ! I am an experienced welder/solderer for more than 30 some years and had never went through all of those steps, in order to come up with a perfect solder connection ! Mike Bolton ought to stick with the scientific study and building of NASA rockets, perhaps ? Mr. Bolton has taken the *art of soldering* way too serious
