Does putting sugar on your lawn work? Does sugar do anything for grass or lawn health? Let's take a look!
www.homesandga...
I followed the "experts" application rates and you can see what happens. a small area of lawn was hit with 4lbs of sugar. One week elapsed time between application and result.

Well, according to podcasts I listen to, sugar causes cancer so maybe it should get lumped into the category with glyphosate eh? Also, I'm willing to bet your local grocery store requires you to wear Birkenstocks to enter. 😂

Lol. If you want to avoid cancer these days, don’t breathe, don’t eat, don’t see the sun but don’t stay indoors. Basically, be dead. At least you won’t get cancer 😂 I can’t afford to shop at the place with the hippie footwear

I have been using blackstrap molasses on the lawn for 3 years, and on veggies and "other" plants for 15 years. I do not use it for the sugar, I use it for its 1-0-4 NPK and calcium, magnesium, iron, ect. Sugar cane is basically a type of grass, and molasses is an extract of its life juices. I get food grade blackstrap molasses for $6/quart(32oz) and apply at 12-24oz per 1000. Very low amount of sugar at that rate. Veggies and "other" plants get 1-1.5 teaspoons(1/4oz or less) per gallon.
@Lawncology
@Lawncology Жыл бұрын
Yes molasses has many properties beneficial to the soil and plant. The micro/secondary nutrients will absorb foliar and provide benefit.

Your lawn is already in great shape I wasn’t surprised that you didn’t see any change. These types of articles are generally aimed at the ugly lawns that have a lot of room to improve. In my experience, the closer the lawn gets to its “genetic limit” (to use a fitness term lol), the less changes and improvements you’ll see when applying products. I’ve observed this on my lawn as I’ve gone through lots of macro/micro products. Do they all just not work?! Maybe, but what’s more likely is that there’s only so much more green and thick it can get. I saw most of the changes early on in my DIY. Now I have a regimen going and things are stable I’m not seeing much change as it’s already green and healthy.

That application rate is insane! 🤣 I've read quite a few studies on sugar application vs crop yeild and the only statistically significant thing to come from it appears to be attracting some beneficial insects. I don't want that on my lawn.

I thought it would draw 🐜. I’ll stick to sugar free. Well not just straight sugar. My bluegrass is brown grass in the 90°+ for 20 days. I’am not quite in the northern section of transition line. Maybe the line should be adjusted. Yours looks great 👍🏻.

I have many things going for it and I’m going to put it through some serious stress with the coming heat bubble. Right now everything looks great and it’s going to continue to be hot and dry. The soil is staying hydrated enough to have mushrooms right now. I’m about to take an extra day out of my upper lawn watering schedule

Isn’t this what your D-thatch is suppose to do also? Stimulate microbes? Seems like the sugar thing I’ll not do, but as far as a test goes it was worth the investigation I guess?! Great video!

Yes. Be a compound source of food for bacteria. Nitrogen, sugars, yeasts, and other stimulating properties all go into making that work. What I wanted to see was the “green grass” claim.

If you took the sugar and fed it to yeast to produce alcohol, which I hear has uses outside the garden, then you would have the alcohol and some amount of detritus which could also be applied to the lawn.

John, it seems to me that putting granular sugar on the lawn would attract insects to that area. If true, I doubt anyone would want that. BTW, it appeared to me that the sprinkler behind you in the video was not moving.

I like that rate better and yes I can see that as a benefit. Using a sugar source for certain apps or chemistry isn’t uncommon, I just read this article and wanted to see that happened.
