Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng break down Sunday's BAFTA Awards, where "Oppenheimer" walked away with seven wins, including Best Picture. "Poor Things" collected five, while "The Zone of Interest" picked up three statuettes. What does this mean for the Oscars? Are both screenplay categories set now?

"So...off you go..." another great Joyce quote.

THANK YOU both for speaking to this cause it drives me nuts sometimes. I adore Paul Giamatti but people act like he’s a veteran over Cillian when he’s only 9 years older than him & more importantly they both started out in the 90’s around the same time. Both have played supporting roles for a chunk of their careers & I’d say only in the last decade in tv & films getting more leading roles. So I think they are neck & neck when it comes to their career histories. And now they’ve both won the equal amount of big awards. Paul has Golden Globe & Critics. Cillian has Golden Globe & BAFTAs. But Paul has already won 4 SAG’s in his lifetime. Does he really need a 5th? Also I would say Paul isn’t so much a “lead” but in a three piece ensemble. Meanwhile Cillian is supported by costars but overall he leads that film. He’s almost in every frame for 3 hours. Oppenheimer rests entirely on his performance. It was a herculean effort & so much work involved. I know people get biopic winning fatigue. I get it. But isn’t that why we as an audience are always obsessed with acting? To see an actor disappear into their role. The actors put in so much effort & work to transform into someone else. And we want to recognise that for them because we not only see the actor change themselves but also we see the person they become. I guess this is just me rambling in hoping to carve the path for Cillian Murphy to win at SAG & the OSCARS. 🤞❤️

I think the perception is because Paul has won more awards ha Cillian in his lifetime, it’s seen as his “due”. Now that I think of it, it’s like Michelle and Cate last year, but more subtle.

Thank you Joyce! "Cillian was always winning BAFTA" is such a flawed thinking... Americans have never had any issues besting British/Irish/Europeans at BAFTA. Also those who say that be careful when you wish for because more often than not when a "local" BAFTA actor wins there they also go on to win the Oscar so...

if one more person makes the yeoh/gladstone comparison i swear. At best it is lazy and incorrect and at worst its actively ignorant constantly grouping them together just because they are women of color when there is nothing in common with their awards runs otherwise. Thank you both for debunking it yet again

I’ve got The Zone of Interest winning Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars. Am I crazy for doing this?

No not really. Seems The Zone of Interest is surging and if the academy loves it, they wont shy away from awarding it Best Adapted Screenplay.

Totally agree with Joyce's "Norma Mom" comment. Leo is way to old to be playing the role he played in Killers of the Flower Moon. The person at the time was in his 20s. Leo should have been playing the Uncle who was in his 50s.

People are overthinking everything this year. I was 37 out of 3,018 and got SIX wrong---which sucks. American Fiction may win Screenplay but it's not taking down the behemoth of Oppenheimer.
