For my home network, I didn't need a license as much. Because some of the features that need the FortiGuard can be manually managed (web filtering...). I am the only user in my network, not many rules applied to me. I think for a business environnement, a license is necessary.

You're welcome. Yes, for lab purposes, you can even buy a device that has reached the EOL. But it is better to get some recent models so you can at least in the 7.x for firmware

Licenses have different prices, from like $150 a year and up. Didn't want to spend money on it and FortiGate Didn't want to work with me.
