That's awesome to hear! Thanks for watching and commenting, it's always fun to connect :) I made it with my drone, and the program called ''Drone Deploy''. Once everything is set up, it's super easy. But requires a bit of upfront research (and a drone, of course haha)

New to your channel and to the permaculture/regenerative farm practices. I would love to create a project like this on land my family owns in Samana. I would love to get some suggested resources and tips to starting the design process for my land. I was not aware there is a community of folks on the island with the knowledge, would love to learn how to find and tour their projects whenever I am on the island.

Hey! Sorry for the late response! So cool to connect through these videos. There are so many people on the island with the knowledge and cool projects like these... Happy to hook you up with some contact info... What resources are you mostly looking for? The main help for me was Geoff Lawton's online Permaculture Design Course. It's really well done. Hope your projects will be successful, let's stay in touch!

Hello Viking, I've watched all your videos up to here and look forward to catching up and watching you to your most recent videos. Thank you so much for sharing. Hopefully you can help me answer one question? How did you achieve your height maps?
@vikinginthejungle
@vikinginthejungle 9 ай бұрын
Hey! Thanks so much for watching and commenting :) means a lot to know that people are enjoying the videos! The heightmaps we're made using the free teial of an app called "DroneDeploy" and we used a Mavic 2 Drone to fly and map out the site. DroneDeploy then automatically makes the heightmap. Hope this answers your question :) Thanks for reaching out

Thank you for your quick response. Does the app work well in mapping the heights of your forested area with all the tree cover?
@vikinginthejungle
@vikinginthejungle 9 ай бұрын
@@tropicalreserveeconomicale1013 hey I believe it did a really good job of that... as you see in the video, the area that's the forest also got shown as more blue... so it did see the ground is lower there. I do not know how it behaves with much denser forests

@vikinginthejungle

Hey Davin, appreciate the compliment! As far as I know, the land is mostly silt, with a decent amount of clay at some spots. I will have to dig a little more to get to really know the soil. From what I've seen, it's really fertile though. I could take from the river, but I prefer digging a well, as the river can get quite dry / slow running and I do not want to add any more strain on it. Thanks for tagging along the journey!

Looking great! I just subscribed. I am working on something similar but in Greece. Just wondering if you are planning on staggering the overflows of the swales? I couldn't really understand from the animation how the overflows will work.
@vikinginthejungle
@vikinginthejungle 10 ай бұрын
Hey, thanks for the comment and welcome to the journey! Yes the original idea was to link all the swales so that all the water can properly be directed towards a deeper swale down the land. I've got to be honest and tell you that once I spent much more time on the land, I realised my swale strategy would need an update, but the main idea, to link all the swales together still remains. The overflows of the swales will mainly just be on the side of each swale. Since the grassland is flat enough, there will be a slow flow when swales are overly full. Thanks for watching the channel, see you around!

@@vikinginthejungle Sounds great! We just finished with our earthworks over here. It was an INTENSE process and it is not even finished! I would caution you to not place one swale overflow behind the other and rather to stagger them if you can, so that any giant rain event cannot just jump from one overflow into the other and gather a momentum of erosive energy. If the water has to travel from one end of the swale to the other before finding the overflow, it will have dissipated all of its energy in the slow flowing water. Edit: But I see that you are flexible enough in your application of design methodology to not get bogged down on one thing. So continue to Observe and Interact and you'll make it better than paradise! ^_^ ps. Gelukkig Nieuwjaar!

@@futurecaredesign Yes! I saw your videos and it definitely looked like a big undertaking! It truly does look well done though so great job... I thought about this exact point you mention... and it seems that really the best way to deal with giant rainfalls, is to have a pond or another form of waterbody that can hold a lot of excess water. It's an ongoing learning path to learn how to utilise the water most effectively and I do have some neighbours that did a LOT of earthworks, so it's great to look at how they did it. The deal with my project too is that I'm not there consistently throughout the entire year... so I have to do my work in bursts that I can be there and the rest of the year is dedicated to thinking things out and considering alternatives. Definitely flexibility is on my side in this project haha. Gelukkig nieuwjaar to you to my friend. Leuk om te zien hoe veel Nederlanders allerlei soortgelijke projecten hebben over de wereld....

@vikinginthejungle
@vikinginthejungle Жыл бұрын
I'm really glad the video was useful, thanks watching and commenting! The zone for your beehives depends on how often you have to go to them to check on them... But since you don't need to check on them daily, I would say placing them in Zones 2 or 3 would make the most sense. What is the project you're working on and where is it located??

@@vikinginthejungle After working as a nurse for over 40 years, I finally retired and is now living in Florida, USA for about 15 months now. In a short period of time I have planted about 80 fruit trees, at least 10 tropical trees have died since Zone 9 has periods of frost in winter but already have replaced them. I already harvested few figs, pear, persimmons and various vegetables and herbs. Since I am also a Filipino citizen and inherited a 6.1 acres of farmland from my mother-in-law, I am building a vacation house in that area and turning the land to a sustainable permaculture. So, Zone 1 is already determined. I am actually following your plan such as creating swales at the property, as well as planting more fruit trees and beneficial plants following your zoning guidelines and yes, plan to produce my own honey. Thank you so much for such an excellent insight.
