I'm glad someone talked about how Oda does characterization so well, even at this early stage of the story. From no bs with the power of friendship and actually having the team do things, instead of waiting for Luffy to save their butts. Everyone is an active participant in the crew dynamics and saving the day, love that.

"Dr Jamie Leee Curtis", that one was genius lol That scene in the beginning of Drum Island where Vivi stopped him from fighting, highlighting his impulsivity and recklessness made a serious impact on Luffy and his leadership. As the scene swooshes by one does not think much of it afterward but in retrospect Vivi had a *MASSIVE* impact on Luffy as a captain. PS. Luffy actually doesn't have inner monologues, at all, whatsoever. The author has made a point in never giving Luffy any thought bubbles throughout the story, only speech bubbles. He is literally empty brained whenever he isn't speaking.
@JesseblueXai

According to research onls 40 to 50% of population has an inner monologue. I mean wtf. How do ppl actually prepare things they wanna say or write before they actually do ist. What is inside of their brains? Its kind of fantastic that luffy actually represents that but I guess it also shows how truely from the bottom of his heart everything comes that he sais. Wise or dumb alike.

The thing about luffy's character development is that his character very rarely changes, as much, as it reminds you why you love him as a character in the first place, which in turn makes the moments that he has major character development all the more impactful. A great example of Oda using this idea of character reinforcement Is on drum island when luffy is climbing the cliff literally holding his crew members in his mouth all while enduring the physical pain he goes through for them.

Oh, Luffy has character development. It's just subtle as he starts off as a mostly formed character to begin with. But just compare his speech about why he isn't a hero to one of his first actions when he gets to Wano and you know we are dealing with a more mature Luffy at that point.

One of the best parts of my experience of the fandom was their eagerness to 'level down' so to speak to talk about the anime with me. With so much media I get into on recommendation, people always hit me with stuff like "Oh you aint seen nothing yet" or "Just wait until wano" or even "This part is kinda mid tbh" But with the friends I had with me on my watch, they always made sure where I was before talking, and kept me 100% in the dark on stuff later on. They always treat the current arc I'm on as "Oh I love that part! Especially [x character]." I never felt like I was "catching up," my friends made sure that I was immersed in the journey, not getting to the current arc. SPOILERS POST-ALABASTA BELOW . . . . . ESPECIALLY POST 3D2Y . . . . . That's how I came to fall in love with fishman island as one of my favorite arcs. It was a little long winded at times, but the reading I took from it is some of the most nuanced, interesting, and compelling narratives about racial tension and generational trauma that I have ever red. Hordy is such a real villain to me in so many ways. The way he's a product of Arlong continuing the cycle, the way he inherited this fight by being taught this hate without reason. Hordy is interesting to me because he is *ideologically empty.* Because he inherits a fight not his own, aging himself with those power drugs until his body is old and his hair is white. I felt it a perfect allegory for someone who's wasted their life on hate and pursuit of power without any real ambition or dream. He's a tragic villain because this *isn't his fight. it isn't his hate.* and he's too steeped in this way of thinking to ever be free of it. Not sympathetic. Tragic. He could have chosen another way at any time... but it needed to be *him* that stopped the cycle there. That also ties into the moral gray of the pirates, I think. They aren't the "you can change" type of hero, it's not Luffy's responsibility. That's only to his friends on the island below. Had my friends just bitched about how drawn out the arc is, how it's mid, or that I should just keep watching and get to a more recent arc, I probably would have glazed and skimmed this arc and missed probably my favorite villain so far.

Usopp is honestly underrated; we all judge him for being a coward, but isn't that what we all are in the face of danger? And yet he always comes back, and fights with his crew from the distance, cause that's what snipers do. That's true bravery. He's not my favourite character, but he's definitely on the list. Guy needs more recognition. Luffy not thinking anything is pretty cool- he's the main character, and yet we hear the thoughts of other characters rather than himself. The more we know about him, the more we love our dumb rubber captain lol. I merely hope that I will live long enough to witness them find the One Piece. It's a long- and great- journey, and I definitely need to know more about the deeper lore of One Piece (the Void Century, etc, but I won't say anymore).

I'm honestly surprised you didn't like Sir Crocodile, considering that he is legit the best One Piece villain to date! ''Sure, he manipulated the country of Alabasta and got sand powers, but that's all he got, and it's not because of his charisma.'' Yeah, no. It was actually BECAUSE of his charisma. Because Sir Crocodile defeated the pirates when they invaded the country, naturally, people praised him. This was his strategy in order to cover his tracks. Not to mention, sand powers and charisma aren't really the ONLY things he got. He is extremely intelligent, shown when he attempted to orchestrate a civil war by making the Alabasta's king look bad so that when he gets overthrown, people would want Sir Crocodile as King. That is ABSURDLY well thought out! He is also the first One Piece villain to defeat Luffy not once, but TWICE! Something that not other villains have done at that time. And unlike Doflamingo and Kaido, who lost their minds when their plan has gone to waste, Crocodile really had everything together, and always seemed to be in complete control. He easily prevented the heroes' plan of stopping the civil war, and when Vivi and Koza tried to put an end to the war, Crocodile had a plan for that. And when the heroes tried to defuse the bomb, Crocodile had a plan for that too. If you really think about it, everything in that arc had gone exactly what Crocodile planned. Also, screw you, I LOVE that laugh. He also pose the biggest threat to the heroes, having incredible deduction combined with his ability to come up with backup plans FOR his backup plans. S yeah, sand powers and laughter are not the only things he got.

Put your trust in Oda sensei. You will get everything that you desire from this show. Honestly, that man leaves nothing pending and is a master of foreshadowing things. You will get hints about things that will actually matter like 2-3 arcs later. You have already noticed a lot of things that will make more and more sense as you go through the journey. Truly a masterpiece shounen that gives you full sense of adventure!

I know a lot of OP fans have probably told you this by now, but the manga has side-stories sprinkled on the cover arts of some chapters to show what happened to certain characters after their run-ins with the main crew. They're worth a read since most of them are important to future events in the story. You can easily find them on the wiki or KZbin if you're interested.

Luffy might normally be (with all due respect, i love every part of his character) a thoughtless idiot, but when he occasionally does some non-combat related big brain move, it's always a seriously big brain move. Especially when it's about his crew/friends. At first, he is really bad at his captain job, but as the show progresses, he becomes an awesome captain, and I love his development.

Oh, just wait. Water 7 & Enies Lobby will have you loving Robin to death and sobbing your heart out, I guaran-fucking-tee it. As for forgetting Ace... yeah, that's understandable. He shows up for, like, 5 seconds and then just nopes out, causing us to completely forget about him for *two arcs*, only to then come back as [DELETED DUE TO SPOILERS].

I've always thought of Luffy having an intelligence score of 1 and a wisdom score of 99. He has his own way of seeing things without the bullshit filter society has given everyone else. You can't count on him to carry out a plan with more then 2 steps, but when the chips are down and you tell Luffy "I absolutely NEED you to do this *one* thing." He will get the job done even if he has to charge through an army to do so.
