This video made the rounds on social media a few years ago. I do not know Da Esi to acknowledge her and even ask her permission to post her video here. But she does a good job explaining this song which has become very popular at funerals these days. Some people think Bella Bellow's song is for dead people - even a dirge. But from the explanation above, Blewu is for the living, not for the dead. It is a song about how to go about our endeavours in life. But because it is cool and some people mistakenly think the first line is “Blewuu miaga kpe”, people play it at funerals. The situation was made worse by Angelique Kidjo who performed this song at a memorial celebration for the Second World War dead. Of course, the international community that heard her sing did not understand the lyrics to know that it is not about the dead. But this song in the 70s and 80s was not played at funerals.
My thanks go to Da Esi from Togo who so nicely explains this song. Akpe looooo...
The upload here has the written lyrics.
