For years I’ve been wondering what the fringe was for. Thank you so much
@annalisajensen33253 жыл бұрын
You can also cut off the fringe too so if something breaks you can use it to tie it back together

Fringe also helps the leather dry quicker if it is raining.

My friend was wearing a pair of bull-hide shotgun chaps when he was struck by a Western Diamondback on the Texas panhandle. He got out of the pickup and went to open a cattle gate. Those chaps saved him from a nasty bite.

Quick tip. Yours are specifically called cutters. They’re attached to the leg above the knee and loose below. Shotgun are attached and close fit all the way down your leg

Thank you that was very helpful especially the purpose of the fringe.

@zachwork : I would give Carlos a call, he makes them and ask for dark brown or have him look at picture and see if he has color, they will get darker as you wear from sun light or from conditioning them.

schooling chaps are nice, no flare, and protect the lower leg from getting pinched and protects the outer leg from rails.

I bought a pair of working Batwing chaps in Mexico 3 years ago, the leather is quite thick/sturdy. I've worn them in winter a couple of times, but they are so terribly stiff, that it just hurts wearing them. I've tried getting them more supple, with neatsfoot oil and also with a balm I bought at the same store last year. It does not help thoug. I would like to wear them more. How can I get them more supple? (probably by wearing them more, but it's just to painfull on my knees). Any advice?

+Mary van den Boogaard put them in the dryer (low heat). Same as wearing them (simulate body heat and movement).

+GoldArmored : thank you. I've tried but only on cold, afraid to do on low heat, but I'll try that. Thank you!

Wearing them. And I have found that treating them with saddle soap helps. Realize the saddle soap treatment will darken them somewhat.

Quick addition/edit:: the chaps are batwing chaps, they enclose at the top of the leg to just above the knee. Shotgun chaps enclose fully (top of the leg to ankle).

Batwing chaps are very full in the leg like bronc riders...shotgun are straight from waist to leg. His are shotgun.
@bradmetcalf7832 Жыл бұрын
@@artemisiagentileschi2400 Incorrect. Those are batwing.

Oh c'mon... Is this a joke? Anyone worth calling themselves a ranch hand knows "chaps" is pronounced with a soft ch... pronounced shaps. Derived from the Spanish word chaparreras pronounced with a soft ch.
