There is actually an extreme housing shortage due to various reason. Most exacerbated by a government that does not push for lower class issues but more middle and especially upper class issues. The rules around making a % of housing lower class priced have softened and with an already backlog of housing required most houses that get build are higher class. More money per square meter this leaves the middle class and especially the lower class fighting over the little housing there is ramping up prices on rent on social living housing (for those disabled) to go up to the price they almost cant afford it. Yeah housing is insane at the moment and unless you have a good job or 2 people with above avarage jobs you wont be able to buy anything decent.

You will be welcome, don't worry. Some tips to if you want to make some after you've settled in: - join a club (whatever you like, sports, theater of anything else). You'll find that Dutch people have a busy social live, joining a club is a good way to make some new friends. - try to learn Dutch, it might by a hassle (as people will switch to English quickly if they notice you a not a native speaker). It will help you to make friends and it is greatly appreciated. - don't be afraid to tell people what you want or to ask for a favor. People will appreciate your directness and they will give you an honest answer in return (they might say "no" to your request for a favor; don't take that as an insult, because it is not, it just means no). Don't beat around the bush, just say what you want (e.g. can you please speak dutch to me? I'm trying to learn it). - go by bike for trips shorter than 3 km Just out of interest: where will you be living in the Netherlands?

On Dutch cheese: jong - jong belegen - belegen - oud - overjarig. Fat = taste (don’t @ me!), and the number indicates the relative amount of fat. If you’re lucky you might find Jong 60+ (and if you do, send me a message). Go to a true kaaswinkel / cheese shop, pick a quiet moment, and ask the salesperson/ kaasboer(in) to explain cheese to you. Or visit a cheesemaking farm. Btw, as you’re living in Den Haag, take your bike, go west, and inevitably you end up on the beach, you’re telling your folks isn’t everywhere - yet is right on your doorstep.

I‘m German but Dutch culture in terms of temperature and sitting on a terrace is so relatable 😂 it’s like as soon as it hits 15°C everyone starts to have BBQs and I just sit there cuddled in my blanket wondering why I can’t have a nice soup😂🤷🏽‍♀️ also the „paying 3 times the rent before you can move into a house“ is a sort of insurance thing for the landlord in case you leave the house damaged in the end. If everything is fine after you moved out there you get the money back tho :)

Odd... I never had to pay 3 times rent to get into my home. Perhaps that is a city thing,... where temporarily foreign passerby renters are more common? And hey Michelle... For us Germanic and Frankish tribal heritage Europeans, 15 degrees Celsius is freaking hot! I sure hope it wont get too much hotter this summer. I like the temperatures we are having now! In Rotterdam where I live and I bet it's similar in the Hague it's definitely gone crazy the last years. I've seen three times although it's mostly two times. And no you don't always get it back anymore at the end. We pay €700 for our apartment but that was on the cheaper side even 5 years ago for what we have. If I look for similar apartements I only find them for €1000 and up which is a ridiculous amount to pay on rent to me. My parents live in Germany and rent a free standing house with two bathrooms, terrace, large garden, basement etc. and live a 5 min walk away from a large forest and beautiful nature. They pay less than we do for our apartement in the city.

@@KCML82 Check your rental contract. If there's a clause that you have to remove the flooring unless the next tenants agrees that you sign it over to them, you will lose (part of) your deposit. I've heard cases where the landlord charged €750 for removing 20 square metres of laminate flooring. And on a side note: When you're moving out be sure to let your landlord know well in advance and insist on having a very early inspection. That gives you more time to fix things yourself rather than pay ridiculous amounts on "repair costs". And when you cleared out your apartment or house, take pictures of how you left the place. Take a lot of pictures. In the end those pictures could save you from ridiculously expensive claims when you can show that you didn't leave the shower in a mess with broken tiles and that the fridge was perfectly clean when you last saw it.

I had to laugh as you mentioned early spring and how the Dutch react to spring sunshine! I experienced that too when I was there in 1986 and with a sapphire blue sky in crisp morning spring air (you could see your breath!) bricklayers on building sites would be stripped to the waist taking in the golden rays. Along with the vivid green spring growth there was a call of new life in The Netherlands after the long grey of winter. Happy days and half your luck! I took a flat that "had a tiled entrance" and I didn't understand the fine print and when I left had to argue with the landlord when he asked me to rip up those tiles! LOL

sometimes it's possible to let the new renters take over things you placed in the house you could perhaps ask for that opportunity to do. it depends the housing association policy. some don't give a damn about making it others easier with things as by letting the floor stay for the next who might be in tight budget and a floor already laying would be a blessing. but sometimes asking helps. my moms house had to be stripped no other option but that was also due they were going to renovate that house before renting or selling it out.

I don't know how hard it would be to get used to the chilly Dutch weather if you were born and raised in a warm country, but I do have some experience with the reverse situation. I was born and raised in the Netherlands, and moved to the New York City area about twenty years ago. Summer here is much warmer than in the Netherlands, with an average daytime high of 29º, a good 6º warmer than in Holland. Every summer, I find this heat pleasant for about a month, and then it starts to get old and I find myself counting the days until the return of cooler weather in September. The heat just makes me lethargic and sweaty. I guess the locals have the same problem, given that absolutely everyone has air conditioning in their homes, and you never see people sitting outside. Really, it's so weird, in Holland during summer there are people everywhere, and enjoying being outdoors, while here in the U.S. they just sit inside. I have no idea why they even bother having garden furniture, it just sits there.

We usually take the floor out when we're to move house. We try (at least many of us do) to use that floor in smaller rooms in the new home, like for example the floor of the living room can often be used in the bedrooms, or in the attic. If we can't use it all, we have to throw it away. Unfortunately Also we often contact the new inhabitants first, to see if they are perhaps willing "to take over" that floor, for a small price. Sometimes it works, mostly not. Very nice video again Casey. Ga alsjeblieft door met video's maken!

It is similar to the kitchen. Sometimes you get apartments/houses that have no kitchen. So you need to instal a new kitchen. Probably the previous owner took the kitchen with them, maybe they also bought the kitchen themself. If not, they probably also offer you to buy the kitchen. Similar to everything, it can go to floors, kitchen, bathrooms, ceilings, garden (wtf?)... basically almost everything except the bare skeleton of the house/apartment. Somehow this is becoming the norm nowadays, but a family with a low income prefer to take it over from the previous owner as it is for them more convenient and less costly.

This brought a great influx of foreign officials and staff personel (known as ‘expats’) that I suppose largely can deduct their cost of living in their tax forms or are subsidized in other ways by their governments. @4:15 street pavment is part of the manyfold of measures we have taken over the past 30 years to make traffic safer, people drive slower and more carefully on pavement instead of asphalt, it also makes more noise, so its used specifically in urban areas it indicates that this is a place for living first and driving through only secundary, when it comes to asphalt; weve invented our own; ZOAB , is able to let water drain and will thus stay dry in adverse showery conditions, its one of the best inventions you havnt heard about, then of course it depends on what the asphalt is used for as regards to coloring etc... we are the nr1 when it comes to infra... you have the time if you plan it well and theres also brick laying robots we developed... theres only 1 reason for this.... "stop kindermoord; maak de wegen veilig" ... we have done what all nations ought to do to introduce safety in travel.

lol, taking the flooring with you is a dutch thing yes. Most time with laminaat. Mainly for you can re-use it for a bunch of rooms but never for the complete next house, but for a few or most rooms except the living room. You leave it if you think it's too old or ugly lol
@yvkon
@yvkon 3 жыл бұрын
Apart from that a lot of landlords demand you return the property as empty as possible and in the "original" state. So that means no flooring, unless the next tenant wants to have it. Sometimes the landlord will allow it, but most often you will need to remove whatever "improvements" you made. In our previous house we removed a closet and put in a wall to increase the size of our kitchen, so we could install both the washing machine and the dishwasher in there. When time came to move we had to reinstall the closet, because that was the original situation....Guess what the new tenants did, first thing....🤷‍♀️

Paving streets is just practical. All services such as electricity, gas, net/telephone cable and water, are kept under the pavements. Under the roadway are the sewers. If you has asphalted pavements they would be a mess of different asphalts.

I only rented a house once, but when I left I was required by the landlord to take the floor out. Otherwise I had to pay removal costs.
@megalondonkleuter
@megalondonkleuter 3 жыл бұрын
how does that work? If the floor was already installed when your rent started, and you had nothing to do with the floor... then how can he charge you for the removal cost? In fact, when renting the place you should have filled in a "status of the house and interior" report, that report is the starting point of how your rental house was (signed by you and the landlord). If for example, you laid down a new floor just when you moved in or during your rental period... then the landlord is obliged to give you the pay removal cost. But if the floor came with the rental... then you are not the one pay for the removal cost. That is for the landlord himself.
@PauldeVrieze

In nl floor covering is not included. Often you can arrange with the next tenant to take over the floor (and liability to remove it), or take over the floor from the previous tenant. Btw. the same for light fixtures.
