I have seen so many people with thing or thick layers of mask and when removing it I learned what I kinda sensed from the start: Absolutely no intention to change, but using all means of bullshitting to pretend. ... I also understand what a trap this can be. I have been shown by ayahuasca once how the mind can go into an evasion frenzy, throwing all kinds of decoys to distract from the path of letting go. I always got the impression that what he said in this last seen was just another maneuver. A guy whose been doing it all his life, loses perspective. He doesn't know when he's playing the game or being real.

The writers had it tough here; they gave themselves 40 minutes to establish this guy, build a relationship, present a plausible threat of her leaving, create a conflict, and bring it all to a climax, before wrapping up with a denouement. I wouldn't say that they stuck the landing, especially from a modern perspective, but by the standards of episodic television in the 90's, I'd say that they did a passible job, particularly considering that they wove in the scifi B-plot rather well.

I think he's still manipulating. It's still his game on. He's a natural. That's hard to change. Habitual. It's kind of a dilemma if the 'cure' would be for him to release control but he wants to control the cure. The test to see whether there is hope for him will be whether he can make some progress in the right direction without her. (The risk is that he instead tries to find some Troi replacement for the same 'job'.) Also, it was kind of Troi to apologize. She probably understands that she didn't want to lower herself to his standards and consider what she did a legitimate tactic to win the deal for the Federation, but if he had taken issue, she could have brought that to show his hypocrisy.

She was stone-cold in that moment. It might have been interesting if he had said something about how she was putting up a front, to prevent herself from giving in and running away. From the way that the scene reads, the only thing that we get from her is icy stoicism.

I never noticed an improvement on Troi, and I can’t exactly put my finger on what bothers me about her. Her accent? Her constant pouting? Her ability to read a room and feel superior in most instances? I can’t explain it, those were guesses. I liken it to how much I can’t stand the song Old Time Rock and Roll. I listen, strong vocals, good guitar and drums… but I just don’t like it to the point of groaning if I hear the intro and changing a station.

The problem isn't showing "weakness". The problem is treating a prospective partner like a contracted employee rather than a relationship. This dude wasn't offering Troi a healthy relationship, he was claiming to be an unhealthy person who needed her to cure him; Troi's response was great: she already has a job as counsellor. Yes, partners should be mutually supportive (all partners will have weaknesses requiring support). But when someone seemingly pursues a relationship BECAUSE they want someone to support them? That motive, that dynamic, isn't a healthy start to a relationship. The initial motive for relationship from both sides should be about giving, not grasping. It's just gross, anyway. I was once in a relationship with a guy who consistently pushed me away when he was healthy... then after I left for good he got sick and he for the first time started claiming he loved me then admitted he thought I'd make a good "caregiver." Like actually yeah I hope I would -- but for a REAL partner who loves me regardless of whether he's healthy or weak, strong or sick; not just a desperate person who 'needs' me and reaches out claiming "love" ONLY when weak/sick.
@brjones27
@brjones27 4 ай бұрын
@@caterinadc5567 Yeh, totally agree. I am just relaying how the average modern woman thinks, these days. It's almost instinctual for her to want to ditch a guy showing any sort of weakness, in any way. Especially if it involves something he should be motivated to do on his own, but isn't, for some reason. Women like to say they want to feel needed or that they want their man to share their feelings. But deep down, they don't want that, at all, one bit. They're going to take off after the guy who shows no such things. The "bad boy," so to speak, that all women want, but don't like to admit it. But yea, in this case it makes sense, as that's something she enjoys, and he did it to manipulate.

@@brjones27I’m gonna take it that there’s a personal bitter story or two in there somewhere…which I hope you recover from someday with the right woman. You may have something there, I don’t know. I think it’s an overly general statement, but on the whole, both men and women seem to be happier when their partners are independent and resourceful, yet have a vulnerability or two through which they can feel needed. There’s also the fear of being manipulated emotionally…which I suspect is where most of the cases of women favouring men who don’t demonstrate weakness comes from. I know I’m generalizing, but on the whole, women can become very familiar with the real vulnerabilities of the men they’re involved with…a lot faster than men can for themselves.
@brjones27
@brjones27 4 ай бұрын
@@szahmad2416 I came to this conclusion after years of being with dozens of women. Take the advice or leave it. Women are genetically programmed to dislike weak men. They may tell you they WANT you to expose weaknesses to them. Deep down, they don't. They don't even know it themselves. Likely just a form of defense to get you to expose yourself. Try it, if you are a guy... see what happens, and good luck.
