Fun Fact: When this was dubbed for Japanese audiences, the original anime voice actors dubbed their respective live action counterparts. Also, the version I saw *did* kill off Clint Howard's character. He was face down on the ground and punched in the spine, making him bend backwards so the back of his head touched his calves. It was a decent effect for the budget they had.

Leon White was Big Van Vader, a wrestler who was very popular in Japan. He passed away a few years ago. Fist Of The North Star is my absolute favorite Manga ever made and it predates Dragon Ball by a year. The anime is...very 80s. There's been some updates that are much better, but overall it needs to be remade with newer techniques. It's currently being reprinted by Viz and I recommend it. It's the source for so many modern fighting anime and manga, including Kengan Ashura, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, and even BERSERK. This film is an insanely loose adaptation of the King arc from Fist Of The North Star. Missing from it are Shin's 4 generals. Gary Daniels was a tournament fighter who won a few championships back in the day. His chiseled physique and good looks won him a lot of popularity overseas where he made films with Jackie Chan and others. If you look at his filmography, it's insanely extensive. He's one of the hardest working men in entertainment. I recognize that this film doesn't do any of Fist's legacy any real justice, but it still has a place on my shelf along with the better versions.

@@JasonBrant yes you do. But be warned, he did a lot of really bad films where he didn't get to show off his talents nearly as well as Fist of the North Star. He played second banana to a lot of other action stars, mostly on account of him not being the best actor or having the charisma of guys like VanDamme. I'll shoot you a list if you really want to see more. I own quite a few of his movies just because I always liked him.

@@JasonBrant Be careful what you wish for - Gary was also in "Pocket Ninjas", which is incoherent, unfunny and boring. Then there's "Santa's Summer House" with Cynthia Rothrock, Daniel Bernhardt and Christopher (son of Robert) Mitchum... and the most action you see is a spirited croquet match. The latter movie is a guilty pleasure of mine, but only the RiffTrax version.

Agree. It got REALLY SLOW in the middle. I think I remember falling asleep in the middle so my friend and I had to finish it the next day. Considering it being a westernized live action version of an anime classic, it's definitely better than even more modern western takes on anime classics (looking at Dragon Ball as an example). I'm a bit surprised it's on this channel because I think it's *very borderline* on just a not-so-great movie and pretty well executed B-Rated. But, I'm fairly new to this channel, so maybe I'm misunderstanding the premise of what this channel is supposed to represent.

It's like the folks who made this did actually love the the anime series and later on the bloodier movie Carl Macek pieced together (same guy behind Robotech vs Macross). It's just that everything comes off as Toxic Avenger level cheesy (and the gore effects aren't even as good) without the self-awareness the Toxic Avenger folks had in making that film. And, the vast majority of the time, they worked almost solely because of his capabilities as a physical performer. Gary Daniels has made some great B movies I highly recommend you check out Cold Harvest, Riot, Rage, Recoil & White Tiger with Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa some of these are free to watch on You Tube. Hilarious review your channel is a highlight of my week and a nostalgia trip because the movies you review I grew up watching, I agree with Jason on the editing some of the angles obscure what's happening but overall this is a decent time waster it's a shame the budget wasn't bigger. Costs Mandylor was Detective Mark Hoffman in the Saw franchise.

YES!!! I love FotNS! I've been reading HnK since I was a kid. (that might explain a few things). I was so hyped when I first saw this movie in college. Guilty pleasure movie for sure. Gary Daniels is a light heavyweight kickboxing champion from England. He is a staple in my favorite 90's action movies.

Melvin Van Peebles (d. 2021) was Mario's dad and a legendary actor know for Blaxploitation films like "Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song" (that isn't a typo) which is considered the first Blaxploitation film. Melvin wrote, produced, directed, and starred in the film. Mario started out being known as "Melvin's son" and Melvin ended up being "Mario's dad" to many people.

I want to nerd out so hard but ill just drop you a few nuggets. The fist of the North star must defeat the fist of The south star, hence the journey, final battle and adoration scene. The attack thing where he says "you are already dead" is from the comics where he hits opponents 7 times with fingers in the shape of the Southern Star constellation and is also the marks on his chest in the shape of said constellation. Last one promise, that was Big Van Vader the wrestler and yes Jason he did moonsault off the top rope well into his 40s. Loved the video as always guy, the only time my wife (who is not a fan) took one look and went KIchiro! (main character) and started attacking me with the 7 point killer attack. (She is Japanese and said the manga was super popular when she was young-44 same age as me:))

One of the first, if not THE first anime to live action movies. And I have never seen this re-do . Fist of the North Star, Wicked City,& Akira are the top never mess with the best Edit: Ghost in the shell would be better if the production company wouldn't have rushed the end result.

I can't believe you guys had never seen this before! I was pretty excited when this came out originally on cable because I had seen the anime and read some of the manga. I was not a big fan of Fist of the North Star, but it had great B movie potential. First off, Clint Howard came on set and obviously shot some people then went away. They lost a lot of extras that day, but the footage was so good they kept it in the film. I honestly thought Gary Daniels was good enough in this that he might have seen some higher budget roles. The film has a lot of flaws but so does the source material, which it loosely follows. Overall, I thought it was very entertaining. Jason is right about the fight scenes though; they needed better camera angles.

This has probably been already mentioned below in the comments section, but Downtown Julie Brown is more known for being a MTV VJ back in the late 80s-early 90s, Melvin Van Peeples is Mario's dad, and Chris Penn was Sean's brother who passed away in 2006.

Gary Daniels was a legit kickboxer. After he started doing movies, he still continued to train with Winston Omega and the evidence shows in his hands - look at the enlarged knuckles and callouses. IMHO his best movie is White Tiger. Great story, characters, and believable action scenes.

Read the manga now that they have been translated to English if you want the best version. I don't mean that in a nerdy elitist way or anything. It's legitimately just MUCH better, and infinitely more brutal, than the anime. Plus the art blows the anime's look away.

I don't think anyone will read this long rambling letter of mine but in my opinion the cast for the movie is simply fantastic and you can see the actors did their best The main problem of this movie is how it is shot. Not only because fighting movies require a lot of extreme or over the shoulder action shots to which a you're wanting to see a good martial arts movie in this fashion I recomend Best Of The Best with Chris Penn himself (even has some wide ambient shots to make it more stylish). But because the source material is SO MUCH MORE than just a martial arts movie and the only way I can describe it is as if Kurosawa directed Arena (1989) with the aid of the visual effects of Star Wars not to mention it would've required a 35 to 40 million budget as opposed to 6.8 million like it had. Still, I feel that if it was done in the 80s and on a much bigger budget it would've looked much better but the 90s had tons of shot for TV movies that didn't allow for the grand scale live action adaptations of animes like TFOTN require. If you guys wanna see a practical way to solve this problem the 2004 live action adaptation of Casshern uses green screens and CGI to creste the ilusion of a grand scale and it looks very dated by today standards or even by the time it came out but it the action scenes are so qell shor you end up believing it which coincidently had roughly the same 6 million dollar budget as this FOTNS movie. The big problem here is that in 1995 it would've been simply impossible to pull even those dated Cassher CGI effects in a FOTNS film. There's a pretty obscure 1996 movie called Robo Warrios that offers an alternative take on how you can shot mask the film's aspect ratio, tight locations and small budget, because its a made for TV film of giant mecha done without CGI but I feel that particular technique has never been done in martial arts movies.
