I personally think the vanilla texture pack is perfect. I feel almost every other texture pack ruins the look of the game and even distracting, especially these 'HD' texture pack. It just looks weird. I think that was the idea behind the vanilla texture pack, it's meant to represent block types well, be consistent and not distracting with jarring textures that are too defined, or look out of place compared to the blocky nature of the game. The 16x16 texture is just right. That 4x4 texture though, I will say that does take a turn for the worse and I'm glad it is where it's at now.

I have been using an 8x8 texture pack for a long time since I prefer clean packs. The pack I use is Rodrigo's 8x8 pack. It's not ugly, surprisingly, it's actually the cleanest pack I've ever seen. So this 4x4 pack looks like heaven to me. I'm an 8-bit, that's why.
