Something a little different. I rarely transcribe other pianist's performances as I find the process very lengthy and tedious, but when I heard Simcock's beautiful and sophisticated improvisation on Grieg's enchanting melody I decided I had to try and notate what he played. What you hear is my performance. You can listen to Simcock's wonderful performance here: • Exploration on Mvt II ...

Are the time signatures changes how he hears it while he is playing or are you transcribing rubato literally?
@rupertaustin
@rupertaustin Жыл бұрын
Good question! When transcribing a piece like this which has so much rubato and freedom I tried to find a solution where the notation does not become horribly complex, but also where I don't just keep writing "rubato" above note values that have little resemblance to what Simcock played. In some places I think I can feel changes in metre and have notated them as such, in others I am just switching metre to approximate Simcock's rubato.

@@rupertaustin is it necessary to even write rubato? Maybe just write out the chart and then the person reading it can apply their own rubato? I'd be very surprised if he wasn't just thinking in one tempo the whole time anyway. Just from one pianist to another if i was sight reading this chart the sheer amount of time signature changes would just be annoying for me

You’ve saved me a lot of work here Rupert, thanks! I transcribed some of the orchestral score for piano myself a few years ago and was planning to work on this recording but haven’t got round to it. Possibly my favourite of all Simcock’s recordings. Like several other jazz artists that I was blown over by in their early days I find he has gone a bit too “clever” and less musically exciting for me now.

Hello, nice to hear that I have saved you a rather time consuming task - and thanks for the purchase! Grieg's original has always been a favourite of mine - it has some real magic, and Simcock added some of his own magic to it.

Have you never heard of copyright?
@rupertaustin
@rupertaustin Жыл бұрын
Yes I have, and I have a moderate knowledge of it. Copyright law considers arrangements and improvisations derived from existing musical material as "derivative" and not worthy of protection - and it is only the copyright holder of the original musical material who can benefit from copyright protection. With this piece the copyright on Grieg's piano concerto elapsed many years ago, so Grieg's estate can no longer benefit from copyright protection. Mr. Simcock's improvisation on Grieg's music does not qualify for copyright protection, so I am free to notate it and post my own performance on KZbin. However, Mr. Simcock might have copyright protection on the audio of his performance, but that is not used here so I have not infringed that. All of my arrangements that are available for purchase at Sheet Music Plus or Sheet Music Direct pay the required proportion of the proceeds to the copyright holders through a scheme called ArrangeMe which is administered by the Hal Leonard Company.
