Here we talk a little about the mysterious 866A Rectifier tube. We hear and see this heavy magic tube and lean some applications of gas tubes.

Nice video. I, too, am a Hg rectifier fan and use them in audio and RF amplifier amplifiers when I have room for them. I might add that if one does not have the 2.5V, 10A filament transformers, a bit hard to get, the filaments can be wired in series and run off 5V at 5A - take the DC off the connection between the tubes. Pat you have me motivated to looking more into my tube stash ,I used to sell tubes and some of them I wish I didnt but as long as theres no shorts and the tube tests good you cant go wrong ,The band sounds awesome Pat and love the amplifier you made

The blue glow is the electrons. You'll notice they pulse with the music. My triode output stage tubes on both amps (triode wired matched sextets of GE 6550A) do the same thing when music is playing. I love turning off the lights and watching them pulse with the music. They're running full Class A so they glow a little all the time, (450V 65mA) but really glow and pulse once the music gets going. I have heater switches on all my equipment. It's a bit of a production starting everything up with heaters first, then switching on the H.T. starting at the front end and then working through the reverse process shutting it all down. I have toroidal output transformers on my monoblocs. Got them from Menno Vanderveen and they are amazing in all respects. My DAC design is all tube and has tube rectification and regulation. I used Caddock Ultra- Precision Film 1K resistors as the load resistors that the DAC chip feed into and those voltages are fed straight into the grid of the first dual triode. My Oracle Delphi with SME IV arm and Benz Micro cartridge still makes digital sound harsh though. Digital is devoid of harmonics to my ear, and the opamps in all DAC chips destroy the sound right from the get go. Great video!!! #bariumgetter

Thank you for this presentation. I always learn something when I tune in. Quick question: I've been looking at tube data sheets for the 83 (little brother to these tubes), and although I've gone through several, I've yet to find a value for the first cap, only for the choke. Is there no actual max for the cap value with these? Seems as though there would be...

Hey, its not uncommon to have a lack of info on the 1st cap. There is a max. I would say 20 is highest but prob 30-40 ok.

120 total watts? can't be 120 watts per channel. I have a massive 45KG amp with ( 8 )6550 push pull giving 125 watts per channel.

yes that's correct! the CK1006 was used in low voltage AC and or battery situations.

@@bilguana11 yes, there was battery gear the Ck1006 was used in like am-43 SC and army power supplies. One model US Army PE-237 used this tube along with a vibrator to take low voltage DC and bring it up to 525VDC. The 1.75 volt filament of the 1006 tube was switchable to conserve battery power. Very odd tube seldom used.
