The Maras Salt Mines of Peru is one of the best things to do in Peru (A Top 10 thing to see in Peru and The Sacred Valley). The Maras Salt Mines AKA Salineras De Maras are some of the most stunning things we've ever seen. The Maras Salt pans are ancient salt ponds that were constructed by the Wari civilization (Pre Inca) and then greatly expanded upon by the Inca themselves. If you are looking for a day trip from Cusco or Urubamba, look no further. The Maras Salt mines are one of the greatest things you will do in Peru. Watch more on The Travelbum channel to see the best things to do in Peru, South America, and even the rest of the world. We are here to show you the best of the best, the top things to do, and guides on how to travel Peru. The Maras Salt Mines need to be on your destination list. This is the Peru Travel Vlog, Urubamba.

The circular terraces of Moray are close to Maras, but you will need a car, I think it would be a at least a two and a half hour hike if not. I have done that route before on a bicycle, which is also something I would suggest you do. Look for a tourist agency that rents out bicycles (there are a few) and go for a ride. Also a few of these places rent 4 wheelers which is also fun and will make good video content for you guys.

so beautiful, I am glad you were able to see them closer. When we went last year we were able to walk around the salt mines, it was pretty impressive. They also usually have some sellers inside and you can buy bags of salt, bath salt with different fruit smells, chocolates with salt, it's pretty cool. I got a bunch and brought it as souvenirs. You can also buy those same souvenirs in the cuzco San Pedro market if you happen to go back to the city. Looking forward to part 2!!

Hey Guys! i was stading right there exactly 2 years ago, and let me tell you that you've had an unique experience in many many years. 2 years ago there were like 50 vans filled with tourists waiting on the road down to Maras, and like 300-500 people walking down at the same time. It was crazy too see that many people, even if the salt mines looked incredible, it was very noisy because of the people. However, you got to see it in a very special way. If i remember correctly, what my tourist guide told us is that each pond corresponds to a family. So that family would be in charge of mining the salt and taking care of it. I have my bag of maras salt (it's pink salt) sitting in the kitchen :) Back then, the price was the same as it is in the capital supermarket. 5 soles the bag (it was a small bag, probably around a pound of salt). I'll be waiting for part2, hope you had fun there :) BTW Alex, the plural of sol is soles. I always hear you say sole n.nu Just add an s sound at the end and you are golden :) Much love to you and Lindsey!

My gf and I visited just before the pandemic and it was crowded as usual but still a worthwhile experience. Wish we could have seen it the way you did, although I can only imagine it must be quite stressful for you not knowing whether you'll be welcomed or kicked out every time you go somewhere. Few months ago and you would have been more than welcome as any other tourist, but kudos to you for going for it and not just sit around when you have so many beautiful place around you. I doubt you will encounter major problems, most Peruvians are welcoming and honest and they won't give you major trouble or make you unsafe. Keep being cautious due to current situation though.

Hi my dear early birds! How amazing view! It was worth of a hike! Almost year ago was there among the crowds, people elbowing each other for a good picture, and look at you, all the place to yourselves. As far as i remember, visitors are not longer allowed to walk among the ponds, so there was a look out where you can take pics and admire, but you guys are so lucky to have seen it at sunrise in a quite special way. Salted water runs down from the nearby mountains, or so I recalled. Run under family cooperative, each family own the right to harvest the salt. 3 grades of salt can be obtained for medical, cosmetic and for cooking. There is a small boutique to sell their products. This is a treasure of a video, and it has trigger wanderlust - thanks for the great effort! Hope u get a chicha morada in yr way back home. Can't wait to see yr video in the Skylodge! Love yr enthusiasm to keep going and exploring. Stay well and safe. Blessings! 🤗

Go to Moray...is not far from Maras. Normally when you go in an excursion they take you to both places the same day

Not all Salt mines are underground. .. The salt mines you visited are underground, the "Salineras de Maras" are open air, very similar to one in Europe called Valle Salado de Añana in Spain. :)
