Thankyou for this break down Mike. Yes I was disturbed when I first witnessed this interaction. I do really admire and respect Grazer for how focused and fearless she is, but was a little upset when she seemed to lose it on this poor starving young bear. But you're right the fish are scarce and there are so many more desperate fights for food. She knows she must think about herself and those Cub's of hers and I completely respect that. So when do the Cubs actually start fishing for themselves and maybe help feed Mom too? Or is it a rude awakening when Mom moves on, and they end up having to take care of themselves , or becoming thieves like this poor young Bear? Who clearly thinks Grazer is a Mom and should be sharing her food with it, like it's Mother used to do. Or could the young Bear even be younger than we thought and its Mother died or some how it got lost and was separated from it's mother before it was really ready? I just hope All the Bears are able to get enough food to fatten up so they can survive the winter. It's supposed to be a really harsh so they will really need to be nice and fat. @@katherinehunter9526 First year cubs generally begin to scavenge dead and dying salmon by the end of their first summer. Cubs usually begin to gain more enhanced fishing skills during their second summer. Divot and Grazer's yearlings this year, for example, are doing a great job catching their own fish at Brooks Falls. Although it is possible that the young bear I highlight in the video was separated accidentally from its mother, I think it is an independent 2.5 year-old bear. It is probably spending its first summer on its own.

@@tedfio1tedfio1 Grazer weaned her last litter in 2018 and we think one or two of those cubs are still using the river this summer. They are much bigger than the young bear in the video who I think is an independent 2.5 year-old bear. It might be experiencing its first summer alone. On the day highlighted in the video, salmon were not plentiful at Brooks Falls so many bears were forced into a small area. Under those conditions young bears who rank low in the hierarchy generally are displaced from productive fishing spots which probably exacerbates their hunger makes them more willing to take risks.

Back in my day, bears would earn their keep. There wasn’t any stealing of fish. Nowadays, these millennial bears think they’re entitled to everyone else’s catches. The young bears out of frame have their faces stuck in their bear phones looking at Bearstragram and Bear-tter and don’t know the meaning of a hard day’s work of standing in the river.

I missed this and thank you for putting it up. I kept hearing about Grazer giving someone a "grazing". Well, little cub is fine, in spite of the beating, but learned a valuable lesson. I know the salmon were late and not as many as previous years, that tensions are very high this year, and was surprised to see so many young bear and sub-adults fishing at the falls and often in highly desired spots. I don't sense that hierarchy as being strongly established that we see each year. Instead it is more like Hunger Games. Hungry bears, grouchy bears, bears growling, bears fighting, too many in very close quarters, whereas they are usually spread out more and the younger ones or females with cubs are in the riffles or at LR. It is certainly an interesting year unfolding! Thanks, Mike!

Oy! I happened to catch this the other day. I popped on the channel the other day because it's enjoyable to have these animal cams on, and I was hoping to see a bear catch a salmon mid-air while jumping up the falls. I thought it'd be neat to see it "live", so to speak. Never did I imagine I'd see this! Glad you went through the interaction step by step, because admittedly, I only had half an eye on it, and when I looked with full attention, I saw the little bear being shook like a rag dog; I didn't know what precipitated the interaction. Thanks for clipping and reposting this! I talked about it all night to my husband--HE was out doing an errand and missed it.

Id just like to add , the behaviour from the small bear at the bottom of the falls and also while that interaction was happening, another small bear at the top of the falls was trying to take the fish from the cub. The fact they were both willing to risk Grazers attack could indicate they may have been her previous litter. I don't know this as this is my first time watching this channel, but you will notice there behaviour was similar to the 2 younger cubs try to take the fish from grazer. Generally young animals are more comfortable taking from the animals they know. They risk being punished but not killed.🤔😊🌏

The young bear looks like it could be one of her older cubs that has been sent out on its own. It knows this is where mom fishes so trying to get the salmon the way it used to be with mom, thus would be why it has shown up in both areas.

Many years ago, I watched a video narrated by Sir David Attenborough about salmon, their duration to get to spawning grounds, etc. Exquisite documentary. Precise nature providing food for wildlife. Grazer's yearlings are quite big for their age. I would be surprised if they weighed less than 200 pounds each. They are so big in fact that right now I wouldn't be able to determine if they were yearlings or 2.5 year-olds if I didn't recognize this family individually. We don't have a conclusive ID on the young bear. Young subadult bears are the hardest to track from year to year because they grow so quickly. While it's possible that the young bear was separated early from its mother, it seems more likely that it is just a small 2.5 year old. We might see Grazer's cubs in a similar situation next year. She separated from her previous litter when they were that age. Her current yearlings are reaping the benefits of mom's protection now, but that won't last forever.

The bear is small, probably 2.5 years old based on its size. This is likely its first summer alone, and this is also a typical age for bears to separate from their mothers in Katmai National Park. At this stage in its life, fishing can be a difficult task. It hasn't developed the skills of older bears and it doesn't have the body size to occupy the most productive fishing spots. The bear's small body size does give it an advantage, however. It can survive and gain body mass on vegetation easier than the large adult bears. Salmon will also become more accessible in the area as they begin to spawn, so even though it faces challenges the small bear has the opportunity to overcome them.

@Bobb Grimley I think it was because we rarely see fights of that duration on the cams, and when we have seen long fights they have been between two large adults. Grazer clearly had the advantage too, and many viewers were concerned the smaller bear was going to be seriously injured. Witnessing this event was a learning opportunity for many of us, myself included.

I went home after watching this video at work. I hadn't eaten all day. I knew I had this COOK's ready made roast beef dinner with vegetables and mash in an onion gravy in the refrigerator. I put my meal into microvawe for 3 minutes. I then started eating and my wife walks in. She must have been alerted by the microvawe ping sound effect. She glanced at my meal. I don't know if this is normal, and I didn't want to do this, but my animal instincts kicked in and I started making these growling sounds and showing my teeth. She backed off and I could happily finish my meal.

It looks to me that Grazer wasn’t quite finished teaching the younger bear a lesson when she dropped him. Another bear was approaching her cubs at the top of the falls. There is a moment when she checks over her shoulder and see that this is happening. Then she quickly decides to drop the young bear and turns back to the adult bear to assert herself, likely to defend her place at the lip? Or maybe there are still some scraps of the salmon being held by one of the cubs. Great video. Thanks for this!

That's the bad thing about being a 🐻 they are ruthless animals. I do feel sorry for these sub adults because they are still small, still learning about how to live in the 🐻 world. Some mom's will keep cubs longer, some will throw out very young. Sad bear was clearly hungry, he almost got himself killed. Sad the fish aren't plentiful enough for all the bear's. I have heard that bears don't actually "sleep" during the winter but can't hunt as much because food is scarce. I recently found these videos and am really enjoying watching them. While there were some fish jumping, the volume of fish at the falls at that point in the day wasn't great enough that the less-than-dominant bears (such as subadults and smaller adults) to get their fish. The most productive fishing spots were occupied by the large adults for the most part, which left a lot of the other bears hungry. Later in the day, we saw the dynamic shift. A big wave of salmon pushed through and more than 200 salmon were jumping per minute. During that time, all bears were able to get their fill and small bears didn't need to take such great risk to get salmon.

Well when you look at some of the bears at Brooks falls they show up with all kinds of gruesome injuries and scars. When I'm able to watch the Brooks falls live cams I haven't seen a whole lot of intense fighting with bears getting injured. Maybe it's because they are concentrating on the fish so intensely. I imagine the battles over mating rights would be much more violent and hard to watch especially if the bears are some of the crowd favorites from Brooks falls. I've seen Grazer go after other bears in the past and she kinds of "steamrolled" her targeted bear while giving them a bite or two. Then her targeted bear "gets out of Dodge" so to speak 🤓. The length of time that Grazer had the smaller bear by the neck while the falls pulled downward on the bear's neck really had me, as an animal lover, distressed but I'm glad he/she seems to be okay. You say there’s hardly any fish in the water but I’m literally watching seven or eight salmon every two seconds jump up trying to get over to the top up stream and any of them can grab them in the air as they’re jumping for an easy meal.

The young bear is small enough that I think it was recently separated from its mom and it is experiencing life on its own for the first time this summer. Subadult bears face a lot of challenges and competition from other bears for food. Even so, they are sometimes willing to push the boundaries around other bears to see what they can get away with, especially when they are hungry. Some mother bears at Brooks River are tolerant of the close proximity of young bears, yet Grazer doesn't seem to be one of them.

Is the best position at the top of the waterfall? And what happens when a bear of that smaller bear, (which is newly on their own) run across it's own mother while fishing? Will the mom show any recognition to it's now older child? Will she allow the younger bear to get close to her if she has new little cubs? I'm just wondering what family is like for bears that are newly on their own. When the mom kicks them "out the house" do cubs usually leave and stay together for a while before parting ways, because I know it's usually more than one cub in a litter. This a lot of damn questions...I'll go find a documentary but any answers yall have would be helpful

They look cute from a distance but behave like psychopaths and have a killer look in their eyes...very impressive animals...

Maybe the little guy learned a valuable lesson without losing it's life. It could have just been the scruff of it's neck, but that bear could also now be known as "Little Ear". I made comment before second part of video, thank goodness it didn't lose an ear, but as you said, it likely wasn't feeling too sporty for a couple of days.
