Here's an interesting tidbit.There was a ferry called the William Carson that went down in those Bell Isle Straits in the 70's after getting cut open by flat ice and was originally commissioned to cross North Sydney to Port aux Basques and was our family's first ferry crossing in the mid 1960's.There is also a song called the William Carson on youtube that sings about her being too big at the time for the Port aux Basques dock that you guys might want to look up.

Red Bay was named for the red roof tiles the Spanish brought over. The Basque whalers would come over and build their houses with the red roof tiles. Source; my mom who was born and raised in L’Anse Aux Clair Also, this just made me so happy seeing the sights I’d see when I’d visit family when I was younger over there

Hi Holis and Michael (good name!) My name is Michael and I live in Washington DC. Two weeks ago I drove up to NL and just loved it. I wanted to see the Northern Lights, which I never saw. Had cloudy or foggy weather every night. . I love your videos and they helped me so much in choosing just which places to visit. I actually drove a bit further north than you guys up to Charlottetown Labrador. Do you guys ever do videos in the DC, VA and MD areas? My best to you both

Hi Michael! Thanks for reaching out, and we're thrilled to hear that you enjoyed your trip to Newfoundland despite missing out on the Northern Lights. It's a beautiful place, isn't it? We're glad our videos could help you decide where to visit! While we haven't done any videos in the DC, VA, and MD areas yet, it's definitely something we'd consider in the future. We'll keep your suggestion in mind! Thanks for your support, and best wishes to you too!

Glad to discover you! Many questions. Do you own or rent your camper van? What's your overall budget per year? Are you self-funded, or do you work for someone? What's your camera equipment and video training? Everything looks great, by the way. You have great personalities for video. Bring on the next one!

Thank you for your kind words and interest! We own our camper van, and our overall budget per year varies depending on our travel plans and expenses. We are self-funded and do not work for anyone else. As for our camera equipment, we use a DSLR camera and sometimes a drone for aerial shots. We also have basic video editing training and continuously strive to improve our skills. Stay tuned for more videos, and feel free to ask any other questions you may have!

I drove the entirety of the Trans Labrador Highway in 2016 as part of a 7000 mile road trip from West Virginia. It was mostly dirt then but I understand it is all paved now which sort of makes me sad. Newfoundland Labrador will always be a special place for me a as a result of that trip. St. John was beautiful and the Western Brooke Pond was amazing.

It's so true about Canadian history compared to other parts of the world but I feel like I can understand the people from that time better than if they were from 3000 BC. It's fun to go to these little towns and see multiple generations who can point to a photo and say, "I'm related to that history-maker"👍

The furthest I've ever been on Côte Nord (north coast) is Mingan. Stunning place really. We had rented a pickup at Sept-Îles, planning to reach the end of the road at Natashquan, but had an engine problem near Mingan. So that's where we spent the night. Today, the road stops a little further east, at Kegaska. There are plans to extend Route 138 even further east, reaching Blanc-Sablon, but there are just so many rivers to cross in Québec, so building roads can be costly.

I had to look the places you mentioned up on the map - so interesting. Thank you for sharing - maybe someday they will finish and connect the loop road!
@hdufort
@hdufort Жыл бұрын
@@theRTWguys The section from Kegaska to La Romaine was funded in 2020, and construction had begun. But there is still a long way to go, to reach the existing section between Vieux-Fort and Blanc-Sablon. By the way, the village of Harrington Harbour (in the middle of the area not connected by road) is one of the most picturesque villages on the upper Côte Nord.

You notice the sayings on the stairs had a reddish paint? I'm guessing "Red bay" came from the presence of "Red Ochre". It a natural red paint found in localized deposits. The first nations people in Atlantic Canada used it for sun protection. That's why they were considered "Red skinned".

Red Bay's name is not for the presence of 'Red Ochre' but for the asques (Spanish) roofing tiles - terra cotta roof tiles from a Basque region are still visible along the shorleine and evidence of their presence in the 16th century.
