Mike and my Father worked together, driving bus for the Glendora school district. I spent countless hours hanging out there. Mike was a great guy!

Used to run around there with my first girlfriend when we, and the castle, were young. It was just open; come on in. Everyone knew the Rubels & the Realty office and that they were a little eccentric, which was cool because every town needs its characters. Haven't been back or thought of the place in more than 50 years; this has triggered a lot of stuff. You made an old man cry a little, for as everyone knows, you can't go home again.Thanks from GHS class of '71

Such an inspiration. I lost a good friend last year that was a very creative builder. He had an accident working on his retirement home and was gone from all of our lives. His beautiful homes are an enduring legacy to his memory just like this castle is to its builders. Thank You for another great chapter in your collection of travels.

All I can think of is 'Really Cool'!! That is an amazing place for so many reasons. It is very nicely done and repurposed so much material that would have been in landfills. It is amazing that he was able to build and finish it. It would be an absolute nightmare to try to construct today... In most cities there is so much stupidity regarding ANY construction. I have a friend who lives in a little city and had to get licenses, permits and 'make public notice' for him to remove an 18 inch tall border along his carport! I choose to live in the country. I have a few acres of land (not at my house) with a pond, shelter and an old school bus(that was converted into an insulated camper). I had a little hassle to get electricity there but that was worth it. I let the Boy Scouts camp there. They have kids from the city that have hardly ever been in real woods, and they bring them out there to camp. They pitch tents, build fires and go fishing; things these City kids have never done before (and if any of the kids get scared from the sounds of wild animals at night, they can take their sleeping bags and stay in the bus). It's a great way for them to participate and not get embarrassed if they get scared. It is amazing to see that someone in the city got to build this dream of theirs. Great Video! Ya'll Take Care and be safe, John

The last flood that caused lots of damage was in 1969. We changed our address so our entrance is west now instead of north. The Castle is built inside a reservoir, so preparations for Winter are always important to make sure the reservoir drains.

What is wrong with the clock? Are they planning to repair it?
@RubelCastleCalifornia2 жыл бұрын
The clock is currently running again. The newest video on the Castle channel praises our volunteers for keeping it running. A lot of the weight inside our pendulum is printing type. We believe someone bumped the pendulum and the type spilled off balance. This possibly happened during filming by HBO of "Our Flag Means Death." Even though it works now, we still hope to have a visit from an expert in tower clocks.
