Exploring a Massive Abandoned Hotel During a Hurricane

For the record guys, water damage and roof leaks has been an ongoing problem even when the hotel was active. They neglected to do ANY maintenance to the place and the roof was BEYOND REPAIR and desperately needed to be replaced. I stayed here in 2017 when a tropical storm hit the region just before Halloween and it caused dozens of roof leaks, floods, a power failure, and all kinds of fun. The foof was practically being held together with duct tape and fishing line at the time the hotel shut down. Stayed here in 2016 as well, and then again in 2018 and 2019 and it just progressively got worse each year. It was raining inside the building even when the place was still open

@@TheProperPeople Absolute lack of maintenance. It was sad seeing the place get worse and worse each year I stayed there for a yearly event. The mold problem had already been in progress years ago, in fact there is an entire section of the building that was closed off and abandoned while the rest of the hotel was active... and from photos I've seen from other urbex groups, it's the worst far gone compared to the rest of the place. You guys missed the utility tunnels under the gardens/pool (Though they're mold infested and without respirators they're too health hazardous) and the tunnels behind the ballrooms that run around past the kitchen. It was definitely eerie seeing this video and hearing the place silent with the sound of the rain outside and inside

I think it is sport of some explorers, to put them up same as those 'suddenly appearing' wheelchairs in the middle of the lobby, while in reality those will stay somewhere on the side for employees to take them. In this case, decorations seems to be genuinely put up at the time when it was still open.

I think there may be an actual reason for why so many abandonments seem to have Christmas Decorations up- My guess would be that a lot of places get shut down on or near January 1st, the start of the new calendar year. Maybe that has nothing to do with it, but seems likely to me.

i went to a convention at the hotel every year since ~ 2010. gonna toss down some comments AND some historical info on the hotel for you. the hotel itself is VERY old, and has been renovated at least twice. forget covid- wear a mask in there for the mold. the entire pool and atrium area was once outdoors. it was reonvated, i think sometime in the 70's. the original owner sold it sometime in the early 2010's to a company rather ominously called "the inner circle". they seem to often buy up old properties, milk them for all they're worth while investing minimal repair, and then demolishing or abandoning. 2:40 - "must have been in bad shape before it shut down" yes. the water damage was first noticed widespread around 2014-2015 2:59 - the photo of the pool for comparison seems to have been taken sometime between 2008 and 2011. 3:22 - "they left a lot behind" yes, the abandonment was very abrupt. the state came in one day in january 2020, and basically told everyone- staff and guest alike, that they had to leave. 4:45 - "trying to be fancy" once upon a time, it was! under the name Crowne Plaza, at the time. once the name changed, the downfall began. 5:46 - "this glowstick is still glowing" i think i might know who left that behind. whoops. 8:26 - "you'd think they'd auction them off" they didnt have time, best i can tell. and the assets seem to be in limbo. the owners cant go in, and the state cant auction yet. some of those assets may still be in the building when it gets demolished. 11:45 - "strung up ethernet" yes. that was after the closure. 12:50 - "one of the dampest buildings ive been in in a while" the roof leaks were EVERYWHERE even in 2019. of course, with people to put buckets under them, it didnt start getting REALLY bad until people left 13:45 - lots of memories attached to that piano. - the whole building, really. kind of hurts to see the state it's in, wishing i had taken more photos and videos while i was there. 14:23 - those cut bundles of ethernet cable- thats... unusual. like someone was stealing the ethernet cables, but thats weirdly specific considering the other assets that are untouched. 15:00 - without checking, pretty sure the only month they ended up in the positive in 2018/2019 was october. 16:11 - the mylar balloon has been stuck in that vent since around 2012. 17:30 - that is part of the area that was once outdoors. 17:45 - you missed a playing card a skilled cardthrower managed to stick into the drop ceiling in 2019 18:30 - whoops 19:30 - all that insulation, the cut ethernet cables earlier- yeah, thieves. 20:10 - hotel guests were practically pushed out the door. there is a chance it was like that when they left. HOWEVER, there has been other proof of people staying in the hotel in very specific areas, after the shutdown. not sure how many actually used the beds. 22:24 - "its just a cheaply built hotel" definitely not the case. the corner cutting in the last 15 years is evident, but it was all built around a very well made and nice hotel, which sadly also went into as much disrepair as the newer wings.

Just saw the episode at moderate rainfall with some weak gusts. Even better ambience. Technically Henri was a Category 1 hurricane for around 20 hours just before landfall. So in retrospect: It must have been an tropical storm at this point but hard to say without a anemometer.

Just one word for you guys to keep in mind: histoplasmosis. A good friend died of it after helping clean out an abandoned warehouse. If you develop a cough after a damp/moldy place visit, see a doctor promptly. Ignored and left untreated, it can defy treatment and put you in the ground.

@@Gooner184 I don't exactly agree. Young healthy people have strong immune systems which rid their bodies of most dangerous spores and bacteria very quickly. The worrisome issue is that a dangerous spore, bacteria, or virus infection might get past an individual's immune defense system. Then, if neglected, an infection can multiply to a point where available antibiotic meds cannot bring it under control. THAT is when one can become toast, despite last ditch treatment. The danger seems to be particularly strong with environments of bird and/or bat droppings (and of course asbestos). The best defense is to avoid going to places which have these conditions. Second best would be full hazmat gear. Third might be goggles and breathing filters. But my message remains: if you continue to operate in these sorts of places, and if you get a cough, fever, etc., see a doctor -- stat. It can very quickly get out of hand. I don't like to be all "doom and gloom," but it's best if we just watch these places on video -- not go into them. I am not a doctor. But you can rent one on almost any street corner.

Here’s a history of this hotel. It originally opened as a lord Cromwell inn in the 1960’s It was remodeled into a radisson in 1985, It was converted into a crowne plaza at one point. (Possibly the 90s-2000s), Then in about 2015-2016 The crowne plaza closed and the hotel was converted back into a radisson. Then in 2018 The hotel was brought by red lion inn. This lasted from 2018-Late 2019. It abruptly closed due to the hotel refusing to pay taxes. This hotel was rough after crowne plazas ownership and desperately needed a roof replacement and repairs.

One of the 'things' that we non-accountants don't understand is the value of depreciation. Often, assets change hands to start a tax depreciation clock again. Or to take a large capital asset write-off on sale. Tax laws are one big reason we in America abandon and tear down 50-year-old buildings while citizens of Italy live in and maintain 700-year-old buildings.

Hotels always calculate the cost of their building and everything inside as part of the cost of doing business and consider it disposable. Never to be fixed or resold after it's useful life is over, they consider it paid for. This is why they start off as something nice like a Hilton, and as the building degrades sell it over and over to different lower and lower quality hotel brands. Eventually the guy at the bottom just walks away because it would cost too much to clean up the mess.

They’re letting them go to ruin - with all of the contents still in it, which is wasteful in itself, when those items could be repurposed for something else. It’s not about pulling buildings down, if you’re going to do it, do it - what exactly are you waiting for? There’s no money in keeping it open? So bulldoze it. Use the land for something else. What IS wasteful is not looking after a building when it’s already built. I’m presuming you don’t look after your home? That’s of course presuming you’re even a home owner. So, you let your home turn to crap, & move on to the next one do you? Businesses close & go into administration every day, it’s what happens after that matters. Either bring the building down if it’s in a state of disrepair & repurpose the land, or repair it. I’m not sure using a trash can analogy in regards to a building costing hundreds of thousands / millions even comes into the equation, & where I live, we have a good recycling system that can be traced to Sweden that repurposes plastic for other more eco uses. It’s not about being ‘green’, it’s about being sensible. Thanks for documenting my local convention dive, after it suddenly shut down I've been dying to see inside after the fact. It was always a DUMP and probably used to launder money. When active the hotel rooms had mushrooms in damp corners and friends got sick staying for the weekend during the events I stayed here. Fun fact, it was originally TWO hotels they haphazardly combined into one, some of the rooms had false drop ceilings you can climb through to access the rooms next to you.

I was there too for the last convention, the rain of the last day? or the 2nd to last day was so bad that it was leaking inside the building. and the lower parking garage flooded to the point of where i was helping others get to their cars as they were trying to leave. from what i've been told by others there was access to some loft style rooms just above the drop ceiling.

the "gardens" area and the pool dome were built after the original wing of the hotel was constructed which is why they butt up against hotel rooms. Those rooms were actually exterior once. The original building was a small motel and the pool was outdoors and the building was less than half the size it is now

This was the red lion off of 91 in cromwell. I stayed there on a road trip once in 2017 and it was a total shithole but the staff were awesome. I moved rooms twice because my first room had mold on the wall top to bottom and the second room I stayed in had no power. The last room smelled of mold and I ended up leaving at 2 AM and canceling my card so they were unable to charge me.

21:00 it looks like that room was getting ceiling work done before they closed if you look up new wires are run, the plastic was to keep the furniture clean while they worked when it was still open not for mold after they closed.

They used to have fantastic steaks and buffets on the weekend that my great grandmother took me too as a child. In the far front of this building, the part that looks fancy like an old time home, the second floor is an apartment with two levels, and a couple super creepy rooms where unspeakable things probably happened. As sad as it is, I stayed at this hotel before it was shut down. It was in this condition while it was in operation. There were mushrooms growing in the carpet, leaking roof, mold growing on our ceiling. It was in super bad shape already. Doesn't surprise me that it was shut down.

Amazing how well that piano still works...wooden keys tend to swell up and seize when it gets really wet / humid. You guys should make a Kontakt sample library of abandoned pianos and other weird sounds you collect. Horror sound design fodder for days.

I've been going to that hotel yearly since 2011 and been watching it go downhill for years. It changed hands 3 times during that period and nobody seemed to want to put the work into it that it needed. Even when it was open it often had water intrusion problems. Sad to see, lots of fun memories going to conventions there.

Did some research, apparently guests were complaining of leaks when it was still in service. Guests complement the staff but did say the facility was tired. The closing caught all guests and staff members unaware.

I was at this hotel for Furpocalypse 2016, had a room right by the pool above the gym. The mold was so bad even back then that I had to leave early. My sinuses were on fire and was having a hard time breathing after two days. Went in 2012 and it was leaking back then. The hotel went through 3 owners before the last one tax dodged and ditched as soon as the state of CT came knocking. Guessing the water damage was too costly to repair so they just passed it off to the next owner until it finally shut down.

My uncle used to run a commercial auction company. As a kid I saw buildings slated for demolition having everything that could be removed sold at auction. Flooring, wiring, elevators, doors. windows, everything plus whatever contents were left. The buyer had to remove their purchase in a certain time period. By the time the buildings were demolished they were basically an empty shell. Didn't cost the owners anything except the auction commission.

Recently watched a recorded livestream from someone who attended a con here the fall before it was shut down and they talked about how the place stunk of a "sweet rot," the leaks and mold issues existed for years before the shutdown. He knew of people who sick from staying here, especially if they had respiratory issues. Apparently some locals went back after the closure one last time for nostalgia's sake because the draw of happy memories was so great

When security left, the scrap gangs moved in and stayed while they cut cable out for days. The compressor probably broke, so they left it. Plenty of those to steal elsewhere. 🖤

Yikes that’s scary to know that just after a year it looks like this. They obviously didn’t maintain the hotel before it was even closed. It was probably falling apart for years before it was even closed. That’s really sad. They might have made more money had they maintained the property and fixed what needed to be. Just dropped in to say I watched this a second time through and it’s no less fascinating. I went to a furcon here from 2010-19. Place was shut 2m 13d after I was last there. These vids make me pull out my old photos from when I was there. You’ve probably been treated to the whole history of the place by now. It was very much on its last legs by ‘19. One of the 2 elevators hadn’t worked in years. Restaurant was closed about a month before shutdown because staff issues. Pool had drained from a leak and already been closed. Sad. Does Brian have his photos of this place posted anywhere? I’m really interested in seeing still photos of it.

Great video! Upon a bit of research, I found out this hotel had at least 2 chain names. The city I live in has a rather large hotel downtown that has had these same 2 chain names as well.. the 1st hotel chain sold it to the 2nd hotel chain and that 2nd one really ran it into the ground, all within a few years time. This year, the 2nd chain decided to sell and some other hotel bought it and they are hoping to fix it back up and turn it around. It's a very popular downtown hotel because the opposing NFL team always stays there the night before game day.

oh, hahaha. I know this hotel. Even though it's closed, I can tell you, it had the same problems when it was open. Edit: Those key encoders at the front desk are Onity HT22. With bigger brand hotels leaving mag stripe keys for RFID due to digital online keys, the manufacturers don't make these parts any more. Older hotels or independent hotels have been scouring ebay and smaller key shops for these parts. Those scrappers were idiots and should have scrapped all the doors for a lot more money. Also, Budget Revenue is not operating costs. You were probably in the GM's office or maybe over in sales.

It's kinda just the economics. Location location location. It cost to much to run without enough patrons. Frankly through the chain kept it going while losing money for a long long time. It makes sense then why they weren't doing maintenance. They were just waiting to be shutdown.

I stayed here 3 months before it shut down. It was pretty evident that there was a mold problem, but it's still crazy to see what the place turned into when they stopped attempting to hide their problems under the rug. The way me and all my friends got sick, felt very similar to Covid symptoms. I was dry coughing for months. This place would have caused a pandemic if there wasn't already one.

This place was originally built as a motel, and later expanded multiple times in the 80s. The pool and hot tub were originally outdoors. There's a lot to this hotel you missed, upper floors weren't scrapped. The offices had a deep storage room in the back with historical files. Upstairs on the top floor was a presidential suite.
