When in uni we had this subject called pharmacognosy, which deals with herbs and plants. We did analysis of cannabis with thin layer chromatography (TLC). How do you get the constituents on the TLC plate? Well, by stuffing the cannabis in a little metal tube, heating that in a special little heater and letting the smoke blow on to the plate. The entire lab smelled like a Dutch coffee shop! Steam distillation of cloves to make oil of cloves (eugenol) was also fun and smelly.

Ah yes, the amazing "hot air box." These were quite common on EBay from 2011 - 2016, and probably before and since. One slightly more sophisticated variant has the same case design, but incorporated a tiny CPU fan (30mm?) operated by a tiny toggle switch on the front panel. The case is sealed with Special SafetyTape - which I believe is a code for "low grade paper masking tape," and the fan is mounted to draw air in through a highly sophisticated grill opening (made by poking holes in the plastic bottom plate with a hot soldering iron). I've not seen one with multicoloured LED 'enhancement' but that's the magic of progress! Some of the most expensive versions of this design include a potentiometer or "High-Low-Off" switch to adjust the fan speed - very high tech. There were DIY versions of the "wooden box" vapourizer published on many project sites. Most were a plywood box with an incandescent light bulb mounted vertically inside. Above that heat source was a herb container made from one half of a tea ball, or a small stainless steel "sauce cup'" to hold whatever was to be vapourized. The container fsat in a circular hole in the box's top. Over that was an inverted Pyrex or Silicone funnel, held with a DIY bracket and gasket. A silicone tube "whip" attached to the stem of the funnel. Some designs relied on "user suction,." Others used a small computer fan to pressurize the box, forcing air through the "herb cup." 12 VDC halogen bulbs for headlights were used in many setups. The whole thing could be powered from a 12VDC 5A laptop AC power supply,. Switches for the lamp/heater and the fan made a basic control panel. An oven thermometer gave a rough idea of air temperature. Many plans included a metal shroud around the light bulb, made from a 180ml tomato sauce tin with the ends cut out. This concentrated air flow past the bulb/heater, and gave an air gap between heater and case. Some "techie" designs used a temperature control module with a sensor & feedback loop - about $10 - $12 on Ebay. The LED/LCD display would show actual or "set" temperature, with a built in relay to switch power to the heater. Some designs were well thought out and reasonably safe. Others were less skookum - potentially a shock or a fire hazard. Thanks for sharing this one with us, Clive.

Who would have thought that the glass piece is easily replacable by a cylindrical multi layer cardboard strip? I died laughing like Ive seen that as every headshop; it's a vaporizer (old style, E-Nails, Electronic Dab Rigs (like Puffco Peak/Pro) and the pen style ones and cartridges that screw in a pen or cartridge modbox) the Volcano was the top of the line. An E-Nail turns your borosilicate glass water pipe/bong with a titanium nail that heats when wrapped around the nail itself which goes to a large power box and oddly an XLR cord/plug in the box which I only knew because I have a studio and thats a microphone cord! weird... Fascinating seeing that broke down; also seems to me that they'd make it unremovable because 1. Cheaper & 2. You need to buy another instead of cleaning the frosted glass rod) to maintain it.

There's a very good reason why some equipment uses XLR connectors for AC/DC power: these days they're one of the cheapest forms of postive-locking connector you can buy. They're also quite robust, and can pass a reasonable amount of current (even though they're not designed or rated for this) because the contacts have a fairly large surface area. Still a terrible idea of course... any decently-high-current application should be using connectors that are rated for the job. I wouldn't use XLRs for anything more than a few hundred mA.

I have a device very similar to that except it doesn’t have a cool wood enclosure it’s just plastic and the temperature controller is slightly different on mine. It’s more similar to a soldering station, when you turn it on it goes to whatever temperature you last set. I’ve popped mine open before and it also has similar construction to that where it looks somewhat DIY made. The tapered glass piece on the end is called an 18mm male joint. There is a 18mm female joint glass bulb piece that goes over that with a round metal mesh screen to keep the dried herbs in place. On the other side of the glass bulb is a rubber hose for inhalation. The device works quite well but it’s very intense, as other commenters said the newer version of this is the volcano, it’s similar but blows hot air.

I have one of these, it's called a vapourite (the Original ones) and is for uhhh.. aromatherapy and essential oils and heating 'herbs' to select temperatures. I've had it for about 15 years. It is mass produced but in lower volumes initially. You can use 'herbs' about 5 times by raising the temperature a bit, different uhh.. herbanoids will evaporate at different tempreatures. So you can dial it according to your needs. Very useful for medical patients etc who don't need the uhh.. higher end effects and just need the relaxation. It smells like popcorn, so is super stealthy if you need to be discreet. There are other attachements than the wand/tube, e.g. an oil evaporation device that's much shorter. Glad you found it, they are not so common!

I suspect it's simply because it's a very simple device, and they didn't want the OTHER technically oriented people to try to do modifications while ... actively utilizing it. If you have to break the glue bonds of the back to do it, you'll think twice about that level of effort while under the influence.
@FilthyMcNasty2 жыл бұрын
Nah, I'm fairly certain they did it like that because there's no good way to do warranty repairs on something that's likely encrusted with residues of a substance that's not legal in most states/countries. Safer/Easier and way more profitable to just sell more units. I worked at a smoke shop in the mid-late 2000's when vape tech was just becoming popular. Sold tons of these things. I can't tell you how many people bought one only to end up breaking the heating element and coming back to buy another.

Can only suggest staying away from sativa strains, as they excite the nervous system. Indica's would be better for calming the nervous system. Couchlock strains are best, from my personal experience. Using a vapourizer is also a lot "cleaner" I find.

I have a portable handheld herb vaporizer. Is this essentially the same thing? Vaporize the herb without actually burning it allowing only the "good" stuff to be inhaled. I can't vape oil because it hurts my lungs and I don't smoke anymore so these vaporizer are pretty nice. Can get my medication without all the harsh smoke.

I remember these were always the worst lol. For vaping dry "flower" you really want an active convection unit. I'm not saying that you can't get decent results using conduction, but there's usually a steep learning curve and will always require alot of stirring of the material and constant temp adjustments.

"Vapor Canon" is missing the "whip".. Air comes in at the bottom of the glass tube with the frosted connection for the silicone tube that has another piece of glass in the end with a space then a screen and you inhale the ground herb through the "whip" and against screen setback about 2"(50mm) after that space(for the herb) screen stops it there and you then place the glass piece with herb on that end of the silicone hose on the wooden box glass with the ceramic heater. The air comes in through the bottom of the glass with the lights that attaches down inside the wooden box. there are usually 2-4 holes in the glass near where it threads on, going over the ceramic rod which let's the air come in the bottom of it heating as it goes to the tip and bringing vape through the herb as you pull warm air through it/ through your whip (4-6 inch piece of glass with conical frosted connection to match the one in box, gap for herb, then screen to hold the herb from going up into the hose which has a mouth piece at the other end) this is pretty much the first legit design where only hot air touched your herb, before this it was basically an upside down jar with a soldering iron sticking straight up inside with a little metal plate on the end you put the herb on then let it heat that tray up and fill the upside down jar or gumball machine looking thing, then stick your hose in the side and pull out the smoke...

Haven't seen one of those in ages. Not sure if they still make cannabis vaporizers like that, but they were very common 15 or so years ago (give or take), when medical pot was being legalized all over the place and vaping was all the rage since it was supposedly healthier. I tried vaping hack then, but I much preferred good old fashioned pipes, bongs and joints. Of course I quit just a short time before it became legal in my state. Decades of hiding it and being a "criminal" and I never even got to smoke a legal doobie.

On first glance I thought it measured ionising radiation as the tube and grill at one end looked remarkably like a Gieger-muller tube, which I was acquainted with when working health-phys in the reactor compartment of a nuclear boat - then I saw the LED temperature display and the game was up, I knew instantly what its likely use was. Maybe it's programmed like my refrigerator thermostat (the style of which you've featured on this channel recently), it has a "do not stall the compressor" feature. If the temp is above the setpoint plus the tolerance at power-on, it delays for the compressor delay to make sure there was not a brief power interruption, therefore the tstat has no idea for how long the compressor was off. Seems kind of silly for something at 200 degrees, but no good way of knowing.
