New Zealand's West Coast is well known for its many Coal and Gold mines, most of which are abandoned with a handful still operating today. The Denniston Incline & Coal mine was probably the most famous in the area and sent huge wagons of coal down the mountain on a cable car type system. The mine operated from 1879 to 1967 and was abandoned, there are loads of old relics left behind and it makes for a great afternoon exploring.
Join us in this week's video as we explore the mine and incline and checkout the Westport area

My father was one who left school at the age of fourteen to work in the mines. In his case it was at Charming Creek connecting the coal tubs as they were taken out and back in by horse. He wrote an account of it which was published in the Westport Times and Nelson Evening Mail around 1974 under the title of Recollections of Charming Creek by Tom Thumb. Also on one the DOC web sites. Roundabout way of saying the track into Charming Creek is a pleasant walk although last time I was there it was not pushchair friendly. Karamea is usually a bit milder in climate, not tropical, and is worth the effort especially the Arches and the start of the Heaphy Track although again not pushchair friendly. Belated Happy Birthday to Harvey, four yours old, a great time of life.

Thanks for that! Wow imagine working at 14! And hard work at that! I have heard great things about charming creek, I think you have cemented it for us now we definitely need to head back over there and check out Karamera and see all the things around there, the Heaphy track does look amazing and would love to walk a part of it! Might have to strap the girls to our backs haha, I think I read it’s opened to mountain bikers in the winter so will have to check the dates 😅

Denniston, and the lesser known Millerton inclines and all the associated mining history are some of my favourite places to explore over there. Also the charming creek walkway and the historic ghost town of Waiuta. One day I will drag the caravan up that hill to spend the night and watch the sunset

That mining town was so interesting. I was about to say I didn't know we had anything like that in Australia - then I remembered you're in New Zealand :-). What a lovely little celebration you had for Harvey.

Haha true! I bet you have loads of old mines in Australia but probably a bit harder to get too 😊 I’ve watched those shows about people metal detecting for gold in the Australian Outback, looks rather hot!!!

This was on our 'must visit' list on our recent trip around NZ. After reading the book "The Denniston Rose" many years ago I had to see it for myself. We had a stunning day like you did, amazing place!

Another delightful blog episode, thank you. I'm so glad you scored a bluebird day for Denniston. It's a great drive, at least I enjoyed it, and a very interesting place to absorb some history (and scenery if it's fine). The book 'Denniston Rose' by Jenny Patrick is a great read for anyone interested in the area too. The birthday boy looks to have had a fun day in spite of the rain. The meteorology book and activities were well placed! I hope you get back to explore the Karamea area sometime, but heading to potentially drier parts is a good move. Happy travels.

Thanks Robin 😊 yeh Karamea is on the list for sure, we just ran out of time unfortunately. We are debating if we go there on a few weeks or if the weather will be to cold... not sure what to do! I’ve heard about the Denniston Rose book, might have to give it a read! We are both really enjoying all the history of the area, the Coal Town Museum was great (forgot the camera haha) Harvey did have fun on his birthday, he did ask at one stage “when are all my friends coming over for a party” which was a little awkward 😅

@@AdventuresWithRosy Keep an eye on the Karamea temps over the next week or so. The district has its own microclimate and is warmer than further south, judging by the fruit and veggies they can grow outside. The drive over the Karamea Bluff (that's past Gentle Annie and the Mokihinui) is quite long and probably relentlessly winding with a caravan in tow. Just thinking of your passengers. Regarding the rest of the Coast I've been told by locals that their driest weather is in winter, so if you can cope with a certain amount of cold but not nearly as severe as further east, the trip further south could also be worthwhile.

Great to know thanks! We don’t mind the cold it’s more the rain that gets annoying haha. Appreciate you taking the time to give us advice! We really want to head there because the place looks amazing!

Oh awesome thanks! Yeh we would love to come down there but thinking maybe in spring? Don’t want to venture too far south in winter... not sure how we would go in the caravan haha. That said we do have a ski trip planned in July so the girls will see the snow for the first time 😁

Another good watch thank you You should be aware though that the golden beaches in the Nelson area are not in Golden Bay but Tasman Bay. The Golden Bay beaches, although nice are normal grey sand. Totoranui however is a beautiful golden beach which is only road accessible from Golden Bay but is in fact still in Tasman Bay.

Next time you are on the West Coast you must get up to Karamea and explore the Oparara Basin Arches, a bit like the Patuna Chasm you had gone to. Also what weather app do you use, I found "Yr" to be good for more remote NZ locations, wind and rain usually spot on, the temperatures a bit lower. Another great video, thanks guys
@AdventuresWithRosy
@AdventuresWithRosy 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Shannon, will check that app out, I just use Metservice bit it’s not good for remote locations... we ran out of time to do Karamea unfortunately but we are debating if we go back there in a couple of weeks when Chelsea’s parents have left, not sure if it will be too cold then!??

@@AdventuresWithRosy we have stayed at Gentle Annie at Queens Birthday, reason we went from Chch where we live to the west coast is overnight temperatures are warmer than the east. Good Sunsets too for the whole family to enjoy as at both Westport NZMCA and Gentle Annie you can also have a beach fire 🔥
