Hello Larry5200, this was a awesome video to watch and I'm glad to see you walked the old Boston & Maine Wildcat line. The ski trains would leave Boston Mass and go all the way to North Conway and Conway NH. This happened up until the late 1960's and stopped because people used there cars to go up to New Hampshire instead of taking the train. I have only walked less than a mile on that old line off of RTE 16 . There is a crossing on the highway for that line also. It is nice to see the tie date nails and cement Whistle (W) post sign on that line. There was talk of bringing back trains through there a few years ago and now it's on hold. The New Hampshire Northcoast railroad runs iit's gravel trains to Boston Mass serving Boston Sand and Gravel. The tracks are nicely restored for heavy gravel trains coming from the Ossipee NH gravel pit to Boston Mass. They usually run there trains on Monday to Thursday after 8pmish leaving from Dover NH. Hope you can see that train sometime and can explore more of this railroad. I just subscribed to your channel and my son Lewis and I are looking forward to watching more of your videos. In North conway NH you can go ride the old trains at the North Conway Scenic railroad. 🙂 We wish you good luck and health. Take care and happy exploring to you. ----Jeffrey Hull Jr. (Jeff & son Lew)

@@JEFFREYHULLJr.-ps8nr Thank you so much. Yes, I see the Northcoast come through here every day. It really is a beautiful train. I went up to Pollys Crossing yesterday to continue on that line, and plan on uploading more videos soon.

The keyword for this video is "whistle." The "W" posts you found at 05:05 and 15:20 are "whistle posts." They tell the engineer to blow his whistle because there's a crossing ahead. And the two-noted whistle-like bird call you heard at 12:12 is a Broad-winged Hawk.

The nails in the ties are called "date nails", they signify the year those ties were installed, looks like 1933 on some of them! Very cool! I spend time on the abandoned rails too and can also hear the trains still running, you're not crazy, the clickity-clack seems to linger.

Thats a whistle post. For train engineer to warn at a crossing , maybe to warn to get off bridge warning.

They were using the spikes to mark what year the ties were replaced. Clearly some of the ties exceed 80 years old

Rails to trails strikes again. And I'll bet they never asked before they ripped out the track. They do that a lot

Great video but a sad situation. Whenever I c an abandoned line I think of were have the individuals manning the train, went also the engine no doubt scrapped for metal. The reason why sooooo many abandoned lines is because they weren't profitable. Much different when coal was king.

The nail with the number is the year the tie (or phone pole) was installed.

Thst big buck wasn’t sure what you were- the snort and front leg stomp were to try to get you to move about. You were probably also down wind - soon as he figured it out or got your scent he was gone

If you'd kept on going on the section where the rails were still in place eventually on the left hand side you to come to looks like some kind of old building or something further on up the rail line actually becomes active again because there is some sort of railyard there followed the line from there all the way up to almost into Boston it has several Branch offs along the way and the the snowmobile trail side where the rails have been removed it goes a pretty good ways before it just stops

I’ve been to the old collapsed building. That’s about as far as you can go on that side because it’s a private trail, although it’s hard to tell from the ground. That eventually connects to the New Hampshire Northcoast tracks which run into Ossipee Aggregate. I also have a series of videos going from there and heading north. That is primarily used as a snowmobile trail. It eventually intersects with the old Maine Central line which is now used by Conway Scenic Railroad. I plan on finishing that hike this spring. I think I have another 15 miles or so left. Thanks for watching.

@ Thanks for watching. I hope to finish this line in the spring. I’ve got about 16 miles left. This is now known as “ Corridor 19” . A recreational trail used primarily by snowmobilers.
