Not in Amsterdam. We're pros. If you can't bike, don't bike.

Hahaha nice vlog. ‘Big square wasn’t that exciting? Just big buildings’. I don’t know what our king would say that you’re not so impressed with one of his palaces 😂. Ah well, it’s just almost 400 years old. So he would forgive you I think... The square is called De Dam and the big monument there is our national monument. Once a year we commemorate the victims of wars at this monument. Next to the palace is De Nieuwe Kerk (The new church). ‘New’ because it’s only 600 years old. That’s where our kings and queens inaugurations took place as well as royal weddings.. Did you know you can ride your bike all over the country? We have 153.000 km of (special) roads/lanes for bikes. Hope you guys enjoyed Amsterdam. Next time in NL visit Utrecht, Maastricht or Groningen. Beautiful cities! And they’re not a tourist trap like Amsterdam.

Hah! Please tell the king we meant no offense ;) And thanks for the bonus information on De Dam and other tips on places to explore in NL. It was such a beautiful country and we'd love to come back and see the non-tourist traps!

Very useful and fun travel report! Useful because traveling with kids, presents some specific challenges which are often not taken into account. I wonder though: how comes you couldn’t get those bikes?

Thanks for watching! We had such a great time in the city. We had our hearts set on a bike rental, but the shop we found did not have bikes for our small children unfortunately.

@@WEAREHAVINGAGOODTIME Ah. Also kids and challenges associated with them ;) I’ve found renting bikes for small kids next to impossible (in the Netherlands, but also in Denmark). Rental shops probably don’t want to be associated with the aftermath of an accident involving children. And, to be honest, you wouldn’t want a child shorter than about 1.25 meter(4ft. 1”) riding their own bike on public streets in Amsterdam since you can’t really expect them to ride safely and with a speed that’s anywhere close to that of adult cyclists. The gear ratio and general lack of stability of bikes their size, mean they offer a slow (maximum 12 km/h’ish) and unstable ride. Decent bikes do exist for kids the approximate size of your oldest daughter, though. Your best option would probably have been to ride your two youngest kids around in a ‘bakfiets’. They’re probably also hard to get hold of for rent? (I honestly wouldn’t know.)

@@JulesStoop I would have LOVED to rent a bakfiet... but alas, no luck. Glad to know that we weren't the only ones struggling with this rental challenge!

Tourists: When you come to the Netherlands with a gaggle of kids, even with a nanny, don't stay in Amsterdam! Don't get me wrong, we love the little lachebekkies/smiley faces. But even i, a 50 yo Southern Dutchie, avoids that hustle and bustle. A'dam is NY city in kwadraat(squared). Get a nice B&B in the country side and plan day trips, including bakfietsen, nice restaurants, guided tours. Over here we plan from Cradle to grave, planning 7 months in advance is seen as 'good business', you will get the Royal Treatment. NL accommodates over 20 million tourists a year, 9 million only visit Amsterdam(NL only has 17M inhabitants), so when you show up to a well known hot spot, the student working there is not going to be 'accommodating'. Do yourself a favour, stay well away from the Randstad(Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Den Haag triangle), bassicly ZH, South Holland province. No stress, way better hospitality and public transport and biking infrastructure are excellent. P.s. You have lovely kids and i hope you had a good time anyway.

@@hondaryder3779 city life, meaning: diversity, culture, museums, dining, clubbing, is arguably on a higher level in the Randstad. And you can’t argue with Amsterdam’s city scape and architecture: those are world class. So I don’t think you can blame people to want to visit the region. Of course the ‘platteland’ (countryside) and its smaller cities are generally a lot easier to navigate and (kid) friendlier, but I would still recommend people to visit Amsterdam. Planning well ahead is always a smart advice!

At 12:30 min.: Sorry, you took the wrong boat! But more importantly and probably unbeknownst to you, the building you are standing in front of is the West Indies House, the very place where the second greatest city on earth, New Amsterdam/New York was founded! At the inner court, there's a bronze statue of Peter Stuyvesant. Now it's home, aside from the New Amsterdam café, to the John Adams Institute!

There are NO original stroopwafels in Amsterdam. That just crap for the tourists. For real one's you have to come to my town Gouda! Thats the home of stroopwafels.

thanks for the tip! We're quickly learning that there is SO MUCH more to see of the NL beyond Amsterdam... we need to add Gouda to the list for a future visit. I assume the cheese is not bad either??
