Letchworth Village was a residential institution located in Rockland County, New York, in the hamlet of Thiells built for the physically and mentally disabled of all ages, from the newborn to the elderly. Opened in 1911, Letchworth Village at its peak consisted of over 130 buildings spread out over many acres of land. It was named for William Pryor Letchworth, who espoused reform in the treatment and care of the insane, epileptics, and poor children.
Reports of inadequate funding and improper care of the residents, including children, were present dating back to the 1920s. Accounts surfaced of residents being found unclothed, unbathed, and neglected. In addition to rampant abuse among the institution's residents, staff also suffered abuse at the hands of co-workers, which included incidents of rape. The institution gained national attention in 1972 from an exposé by Geraldo Rivera.

They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What may seem an eyesore to one person, just might be a beautiful masterpiece to another. There are places beloved by communities and protected in the hearts of those that hold their memories of its tattered hallways and decayed rooms dear. This is the way that we feel when we explore places that have been forgotten by time. Left to rot and decay and only holding the silent whispers of what once was. We know that there are people out there with malicious intent toward these places that we venture into. It saddens us when we see the filth and destruction they leave behind, but we want to make something very clear… We are explorers and lovers of history. We in no way, shape or form condone the criminal activities that take place in the historical decaying places that we document. Social media has brought many of these places to the limelight, but the intention is to show the beauty and mystery of abandonment. Not to invite trouble. Trouble will find its way on its own and to say that the peaceful documentation of these places leads to criminal activity, is mind blowing. We have met so many amazing fellow explorers in our travels and are so thankful and humbled by the positive responses we have received. We know that this type of exploration is not for everyone…many people don’t understand why we find such beauty in decay, we can only explain it as a beautiful journey into the past. We invite you to watch our explores and come along as we visit these amazing places. As for the criminal activity that occurs, those individuals are responsible for their own actions. It is a terrible part of our society, but reality, nonetheless. Thank you for taking the time to read this and for loving this location just as much as we do. We hope that through this video, the memories held within will remain.

Jeez this one is so solid and intact, and it really stayed in use a good bit after the rest of the facility it looks like. Little details everywhere, but of course, they just add to that epic, gorgeous paint peel! Love this spot! 💕

Oh my goodness, I am so glad I came across your video!! I was one of the original students that went to this daycare in the 2000s. My mom was one of the teachers there for years! I have tears in my eyes watching this. I remember always being scared upstairs. I’ve seen a lot of this paintings painted. It’s nice to see some are still there lol

Why do they have such a lot a abandoned buildings, properties in the US? And even abandoned vehicles? Is it because you can walk away from your debt? Or is it because US is such a big country, nobody cares? In the Netherlands, where I live, you wont see a lot a abandoned properties of vehicles or anything. Partly because we're a very very small country of course and also we can't walk away from debt.
@jeffgualandijr9420
@jeffgualandijr9420 6 ай бұрын
i would say neither. some due to the misfortune of debt but only as the result of debt but exactly to walk away from it. the other is corporate waste. hospitals and medical facilities being at the top of the list, but Child prisons (schools), some old law enforcement buildings, facilities such as these, asylums, in some cases power plants are all the result of a corporation literally abandoning a building and essentially throwing everything inside of it away with no respect to the fact that in many cases just about everything is still good operable and useful. but since they have so much money as business is largely a shady scam or fraudulent operation in this country as many things are here, its not all beautiful like most people put it. and so they say screw it, we could update the building or we could carry over whats still good to a new location but naw lets just build a brand new tasteless building usually in a place of a beautiful building like this one and leave everything behind and waste everything and buy all brand new everything unless we see somebody break in, then we will claim that its invaluable and call those blue scum bags to try and suck some money out of those people or imprison them if we can't. like i said its not all great. this country is disgusting is a lot of ways. its hardly a great country to say the least.

"Corporate waste": that's unfortunate, I guess. You won't see that in a very very small country such as the Netherlands. I mean as far as I know, everthing what's waste is taking care of. And old buildings not in use, will be demolished and new buildings will arise. And we don't have old vehicles standing all around. Perhaps united states could do that as well?@@jeffgualandijr9420

But all this makes nice video's. I mean in Belgium, the country just south of the Netherlands, there is one village that's kind a ghost village as well. It's called Doel, situated near Atwerp.@@jeffgualandijr9420

Why are you calling an asylum a daycare??
@JMExplorations
@JMExplorations 3 ай бұрын
Because it’s a daycare building in an asylum complex!
@JMExplorations
@JMExplorations 3 ай бұрын
Historically, it is an asylum. But that whole section has been modernized to office, a rec center, senior center & golf course. The daycare was part of the newer buildings, not the historic asylum. Although we did see some clues from the past.
