I explore a section of the Chihuahuan desert on my Can Am Outlander and end up finding an abandoned homestead in a remote and barren landscape. The homestead itself is roughly from the late 1980s or 1990s and tells a story of how hard life can be without proper resources.

My experience exploring the desert in my youth has made me believe that it is one of the most magical and surreal places to be if you take the time to listen to it. We would suck on the mesquite pods and eat the cactus fruit while hiding in the circular crawlspaces that some bushes make. The adults would hunt jack rabbits during the season you were allowed to hunt them, but we hated the taste of them. You see remnants like that homestead and it makes you wonder about the many forgotten stories that the land holds. I hope one day to have my own place in the desert again, and this video has made me yearn for it even more. Thanks for sharing, I will be watching more of your desert vids.

I appreciate the desert myself. It is such a vast remote wilderness that often gets over looked. But I have stumbled across some of the coolest things in the desert. I appreciate your stories and I hope you can find your way back to the desert. Thanks for watching and your comment.

Thanks for another video!! I saw you posted this new video a couple days ago but my wife and I didn't get around to watching it until today. What's funny is we were out in the Ojito Wilderness riding our quads and when we stopped to make coffee and lunch we decided it was a perfect time to watch this latest video of yours LOL. We only got about 5 minutes into it when we decided to stop because of too much daylight glare on the phone and the vistas among us were too majestic to ignore because of our electronics. Now that we're home we finished your video and loved every minute of it. Looks like you were just north of the Sevilleta Refuge. Something about Landron Peak is magical to me. I never get tired of looking at it from Rio Rancho and I never get tired of driving down that way. I've been around via the backroads of Landron a few times but I've never climbed it. One day I will. Anyway it was good to see you on the trail again and my wife and I would love to ride with you sometime. I don't do facebook or instagram but she does. Hope your hunts went well and God bless, stay safe! ✌👍

Sorry for the late response. The Ojito Wilderness is a great place to go. I have not rode my ATV out there yet and I would love to before the summer heat comes. What I have done is hike around the area and it is neat out there. That is super cool you tried to watch the video on trail, but I am glad you finished is later. I was just north of the Refuge. In fact, I rode through a small section of it that is open to the public before I turned away from it. The Ladrone Mountains are really neat. The history about them and the drive all the way to Magdalena along the backcountry road is beautiful. I know a few people who have climbed it and each has described it and a difficult hike since its all primitive with no trails. The hunts went well, thanks. What is even better is to eat what you harvest. I think that will be a great idea. We should meet up someday and plan a ride. I would like that. No worries, I appreciate your support of KZbin and if your wife does follow me on Instagram you'll be current on what is going on when videos are not coming out. Take care and god bless. Enjoy this spring like weather. Its nice out!

Time to say hi and I enjoy your vids. I live near San Lorenzo Canyon, NM and have driven all the trails you have down here in my old 4x4 or now my SXS. My backyard. In addition to enjoying the country and trails on both sides of the Rio Grande, I also enjoy finding old abandoned homesteads, ranches and the occasional mine like you. Think of the grueling decision to abandon your ranch after the years of toil to build it. What a heartache. If only those old rock walls could talk! Enjoy the trails and thanks for sharing through your videos. Maybe we'll bump into each other someday on one side of the Ladrones or the other 🙂

Hey there! Welcome! I am glad you are enjoying my videos and it is nice to hear from a local who know the areas I explore. We are really fortunate to have such an awesome backyard to ride and camp in. This abandoned ranch was really cool. I bet when they left it was not easy considering how much work was put into it. Keep an eye out for me. It is possible we will cross paths. Thanks for watching!

That homestead looked like something right out of a Sergio Leone western. I could almost imagine Lee Van Cleef sauntering up to it. That is some desolate, but beautiful, scenery out there. Glad to see you back out on the trail; there are tons of cool areas to explore south of I-40 in wintertime. Let me know if you ever need a hunting buddy! I have a 12 ga. collecting dust in the safe and am trying to get into the sport. Happy New Year!

I know what you mean by the western setting. I think that is why in almost every western film developed you can almost place bets it was filmed in New Mexico. We have the perfect setting for it. But the scenery this way is simply awesome and much different than the northern half. There are only a couple weeks left for hunting ducks etc. Lets plan on making this possible next year. I would be happy to share this experience with you. Happy New Year to you, take care.

WOW, what a GREAT find bud! Can you imagine living in there? And that wall paneling wasn't all that old. We had stuff like that when I was a kid in the '70's. OK, well, maybe it is old - HAHAHAHA!!! Do you think that might have been just a cowherd or shepard's shack (as opposed to a homestead)? I've watched a lot of shows where the Ranch Manager has an outbuilding he uses so he can stay with the herd to keep an eye on them in calving season. Just curious. Those sinkholes are so bizarre! The water just disappears from the surface into an underground cavern. Scary stuff if you're walking there at the time - lol Excellent video bud! Thanx for taking us along!

It would be wild to live there. Challenging for sure which is why no one is living there now most likely. I agree, it's probably 25 to 50 years old since the paneling was not old. In New Mexico, it's hard to say if it was used for sheep or cows. Even today, there are many isolated ranches that are still active in the remote lands of New Mexico for calving and raising livestock. This region of New Mexico is historical for outlaws who use to run and raise hell. Maybe 60 miles away Geronimo was killed and buried in the hills. The sinkholes are super interesting and the desert is full of random surprises including lots of Indian arrowheads and pottery. But when it rains there is an underground complex of water running probably creating caves. Thanks for watching buddy.

Enjoyed this video, pretty cool checking out that old home/farmstead. Surprised Q didn't question you on your crappy ratings. I had a chuckle when the scene changed and you were just standing their with a banana. Was not expecting that haha. Those washed out areas were pretty sketchy, I would've avoided them best I could too.
@ManzanoManATVAdventures
@ManzanoManATVAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
Haha, yeah no kidding on the Q comment. I was thinking the same thing. He is the king of crapper reviews lol. Sometimes I do a quick advance in the videos because I got so caught up in something else that I didn’t film a section that lead up to the next part lol. But I am glad you had a laugh. Those washed out areas are wild. Camera couldn’t pick up the depth or how wide it was. But it was easily chest deep and anywhere from a foot to 2 or 3 feet wide. Enough to wreck a day if you weren’t paying attention.

Great video buddy! Seeing those washouts is pretty cool. Apparently they had plumbing, so this isn't as old of an abandoned building as I expected. That's kind of bizarre. I wonder what happened? Great riding with you buddy! Always a pleasure!
@ManzanoManATVAdventures
@ManzanoManATVAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
My initial impression was that it was much older than it turned out to be. As I continue to walk around and fully process everything it is most likely that this place was abandoned probably around 20 or 30 years ago. I think the family wanted to put plumbing and run electricity at some point. But it is so far off grid that perhaps the cost to run those utilities would’ve been way too excessive in cost. New Mexico is loaded with old relics or newer abandoned places like this. The desert is such a harsh environment to live in, but it’s ruggedness and remote country is awesome to explore. Thanks for watching and I hope all is well your way.

Thanks for watching buddy. I hope all is well out there in Arizona and that you are able to get out and explore. This desert part of New Mexico is more of the higher rolling plains, but if you head further south then you get into more canyons and mountains with all the cactus and mesquite thorn bushes. I love riding out here because you could find yourself in a different landscape all within two hours of my house. I hope to put a couple desert trips it before it starts to get too warm, especially a good desert camp.
