What a cracking video both. The sound of that engine brings back some very old and dusty memories from my childhood. It's brilliant to see the survivors even if they require a lot of effort, time and money. Well worth it in my book. Many thanks for sharing.

Fabulous. That AEC engine sounds so lovely. My home town (Portsmouth) was mostly Leyland PD1/2/3 with Leyland O600 engines, later O680 with Atlanteans.

My two favourite youtubers after Mr Hub Nut introduced Pete in his video last year. I lived around Heathfield up until two years ago so remember when the bus turned up resplendent in it's Starsky and Hutch livery. This was back in the very early nineties at what was once the Long Barn Motor Museum. The owners are good people with a rich history in weird and wonderful cars as well.

I enjoy the outputs of both of these most entertaining and informative creators individually. But put Ian and Pete together, add bus content, stir then sprinkle over a pinch of the wonderful eccentricity that can be found in those of us who can't help buying an old piece of machinery without worrying about whether we need it or where the heck we're going to put it. Great collaboration chaps, this is going to be a good weekend for watching KZbin videos. Or should I fit the new clutch slave cylinder to the Maxi with no name, then go for a drive because I can? This abandoned bus has quite a history and it'd be good to see it restored, either to its original state or in its after service life. It says a lot about the initial build quality that the engine actually worked after it sat in the field for so many years.

My connections with this much abused RM are threefold: the sound of the AEC engine from my youth in the 60s til i left London in the mid 80s is the 'right' noise from a Routemaster. So evocative. And Cross in Hand is where my grandfather grew up in the late 19th century, and where my mother was evacuated to in the 40s. The churchyard also has family graves (Akehursts) and a memorial only to my great-uncle Hubert who was killed in action in 1918 at the age of only 18. (He's buried in Belgium, i plan to go and pay my respects soon.) V pleased the 'Heathfield' bus has been saved.

One of the most iconic buses ever built. Takes me back to my childhood in north London. Drove one along with a bendy-bus and a modern Wrights double-decker. The RM was by far the easiest one to drive, loved it. Thanks for the upload.

I'm so glad i found this channel, never EVER let these busses go up in some bs fire etc, install sprinkler systems!. And those extinguishers that sit inside the engine bay that use foam to snuff out engine fires early. There's enough barn fires etc taking out old vehicles.

Great video, driven a few Routemasters, lovely drive. London Transport red Routemasters were all full automatic originally, and the brakes were designed so they wouldn't lose air pressure in London traffic, British engineering at its best.

Routemasters could be auto but you could select 1st to 3rd manually.

Semi-auto so you were only given an automatic licence when you passed your test. To get the most outbof them we used to start away in auto 2nd, which is actually in the 4th 'top position'. When it changed up from 2nd to 3rd automatically we pushed the selector through to 3rd and got the most out of that before pulling it back to 4th. If you let the auto select 3rd it changed up too early. 1st was only ever used to get away on a steep gradient. 2nd was the default starting away (auto top position), and also used in the garage when you drove up to the tap to fill the header tank in the morning. Duel hydraulic brakes and power assisted steering (as long as the oil was kept topped up).

I did see the videos of them getting that ex-Bravo bus going, and given the state of it, both in terms of degredation and the general "decor", I felt like I needed a shower myself just watching it being explored back then!!! Goodness knows what went on with and to that chaise longue, probably needs burning really.......... :S

Driven plenty of buses but never a routemaster only ever saw one when on a trip to London and obviously been on a Boris bus, sounds spot on, love the history of the routemaster even have a Haynes manual.

I enjoyed watching your get together Made a good video with hearing about all Pete's busses together. I recently had a 1/2 hour ride each way on one and found it very comfortable better than some of the Arriva busses I go on today with their less comfy seats and harder suspension. The Routemaster was certainly a very well designed and built bus

I hope to hear 843's engine again after it's oil leak issue is sorted. It's a sweet runner and effectively a time capsule engine, having done almost no service since being rebuilt in 94.

Could have a Leyland engine and be original. I only ever drove AEC ones in service though out of Westbourne Park. Some of first ones were there at my time in 84-86 including RM24. Preserved down my way in Corfe Mullen.

The ones I used to drive in service had an Iveco engine (supposedly ex bilge pumps from a oil platform ). My main memory was the water filter rusting out and dumping the cooling system over the road. (Thankfully always near a cafe. funny that eh ). And yes someone somewhere thought hmmm these engines need a water filter, so lets fit one made out of mild steel. 🤨

Strangely the Iveco fitted to the DMS fleetlines gave them a turn of speed that they never had with the leyland lump. I knew a couple of drivers who were quite disappointed when they replaced those with metros that were being cascaded to the outer area in the 90s

Thanks Hubnut for this great video with Pete and his Bus. I used to regularly ride the 207 into Uxbridge in the 1960s. Just last weekend I had a ride in one at the Amersham heritage day. I'll look out for the different engines now as I didn't know they'd changed some. Also I think Pete would make a great Basil Fawlty, ( he'd have to be a bit more grumpy though). 😅

You should have a dropped STOP flag with the braking pressure light unless it's faulty. Out of service with LT if that was the case. My garage, Westbourne Park made a superb job of maintaining them. All went downhill with privatisation when they couldn't give a f...luff 😡

@@basher50 If buses were not of particular interest, then fair enough. All I would say is, if you thought the Routemaster was a pile of poo, then you ought to have tried other double deckers from the 1960s. Other than the BMMO D9 at Midland Red, they were positively horrendous!

@@Tiptonian passed my test in an RT, then RM's and RML's. Next came one man operation with Titan's, several flavours of Midi Bus and finally Volvo's. Joining London Underground was a blessing.
