The 2 metal "pill boxes" on the top weren't for machine guns. They were for shooting bearings to the target ships. If you know the distance between the two points, and the angles to the target you can calculate the range very quickly. That information was passed to the guns for targeting.

14:00 is one of the coolest moments I've seen in an video like this, so I thought I'd take a deeper look. This is just my interpretation, and I'm not an expert in this. Identifying the runes, they don't strictly follow any sort of specific runic alphabet, there's a mix here. The main one is Old Hungarian, which makes sense given it being an Austro-Hungarian fort. However, there are plenty of much more well known old Germanic runes, Odal, Ansuz, Berkanan. If they're here for any particular reason, my guess is it's for their "magical" use. More magical imagery would be the cross pattern sigil on the other wall, which clearly is inspired by Icelandic Magical Staves and similar symbols, though doesn't take after any in particular. As for the nearby spiral pattern, I'd say that's uh, for shock value. Can't blame them, it certainly worked on me. Almost thought this was a promo for the next season of True Detective for a second. All in all, what I'm leaning towards for the whole set of carvings is that it's just someone goofing around. The only thing that gives me pause is the use of Old Hungarian, which suggests something deeper and more... cultured? Either way, those are my two cents on the carvings. Must have been a real shock to go from pointing out the lack of graffiti to... that. The ladder was another great moment, and likewise with everyone else I'm glad you didn't try going down it. I don't think anything would be worth the risk, and hey - it leaves a cool mystery out there.
@danielapetersen8741Күн бұрын
Thanks, I was hoping someone would have any insight on that! It was the most mysterious bit of the video, but no one is commenting.

Dobrec Beach is the name of this place you can drive to the base with a 4x4 like I did But what about the history of the submarines? Let me explain The Austro-Hungarian submarine fleet was established in the decade leading up to World War I, built in various designs, many of them under license from Germany. These submarines carried out operations during the war against Italian, French, and British ships in the Mediterranean Sea and had some success, but unfortunately, eight out of the twenty-eight serviceable submarines were lost. The Austro-Hungarian submarine fleet was reinforced by the Pola Flotilla of the German Imperial Navy, mainly consisting of coastal submarines transported by rail from northern shipyards in Germany to Austrian ports on the Adriatic Sea. After the end of the war in 1918, all Austrian submarines were handed over to the Entente powers, who individually transported them away. Since then, no Austrian or Hungarian submarines (or other naval vessels) have been commissioned because Austria and Hungary were completely cut off from the sea after the war. Some sources refer to Austro-Hungarian submarines using Roman numerals as a way to distinguish them from German submarines with similar numbers, but the Austro-Hungarian navy itself used Arabic numerals. There are gaps in the numbering for various reasons. A series of Austro-Hungarian submarines under construction in Germany were sold and commissioned by the German Imperial Navy. In other cases, submarines in service with the German Imperial Navy were temporarily assigned to Austro-Hungarian numbers during their operations in the Mediterranean Sea. Superstition was a final reason for the unassigned U-13s

Really cool forts! Loved seeing more inside the buildings and the submarine base. I do want to mention that I'm *not* particularly a fan of the creepy music when you were in the underground rooms. 😅 Part of the reason I've enjoyed your videos so much is that there isn't much of that, it really gets my anxiety up. I did find it really fascinating that in spite of this being a more modern fort, it follows the tradition of ancient castles in having many lines of defense (like the gun slits on the walls beside where a door would have been, multiple doors to get in, etc). It reminds me of Carcassone in France and Lachish in ancient Israel. (Lachish had SO MANY defensive gates, it's wild, and Carcassone is a castle I've been too and find really cool but its defenses were common for when it was built) I don't know as much about how modern fortifications are constructed, so I really enjoyed seeing that this one is built just like castles and fortresses had been built for millennia! Thanks for the close up look!
@joshtheintern15 күн бұрын
Thanks so much for watching and I totally understand, I thought the places were quite creepy so I wanted to make it more atmospheric. Some people enjoy the more creepy vibe but I understand it's not for everyone. I'll try balance between the two in my videos and only use the music if it matches how I felt exploring the place. That is really fascinating! They must have taken inspiration from earlier designs. I couldn't imagine trying to attack that fort, it seems it would be near impossible. I'd love to visit Carcassone one day, it looks spectacular!
