It’s strange seeing the cooling towers by the main road stripped out. I took a lot of photos 21 years ago with all the concrete columns supporting concrete slats that formed the cooling system. They were completely different to the cooling towers at the B Station. I was photographing the base of the cooling tower by the main road when I noticed a falcon hovering above, close to the door opening at the throat of the tower near the top. It was caught on camera. I later heard falcons nest in the door opening near top by locals in Willington. The door opening was there to allow climbers to switch sides when they maintained the red aircraft warning lights at the top. There are step irons on the side of the cooling tower above the openings at the base to provide access for maintenance workers. The concrete stairs that led up to a “eye” door were demolished during the demolition phase of the main power station. I also visited the cooling towers at Thorpe Marsh Power Station near Doncaster and give out of six had their insides removed.

I would like to know who designed these cooling towers. The 2 by the main road form part of Willington A and although all 5 cooling towers are 300feet tall, 218 feet at the base, the 2 cooling towers by the main road have larger struts at the base. The struts are rectangular and rounded in section are because they are larger there are fewer than the other 3 cooling towers to the north. These form part of Willington B. The concrete shells of cooling tower 3,4 and 5 are thinner and the legs are square but there are a lot more legs. All 5 cooling towers were partially stripped at the top level around the year 2000 but work stopped. Cooling towers 1 and 2 had thousands of brass sprinklers that look like fire water sprinklers. They were removed by contractors leaving the cooling stack intact. Years later the concrete stack was removed in cooling towers 1 and 2 for safety reasons. I believe the the first cooling towers by the road had a Marley Davenport cooling system but I would like someone who used to work there to confirm if that is true or not. I am surprised how little water was in if they were filmed a few days ago.
