Exploring and Sleeping Overnight at an Abandoned Resort in Northern Ontario
This abandoned resort in Northern Ontario was sent to me by a guy who has followed me for some time and always sends me the interesting places he passes on his frequent travels.
This one, he sent me around the spring/early summer of 2020, located up in Northern Ontario this would make a perfect stop on one of my long summer road trips for astrophotography and exploring.
Photo Gallery:
freaktography.web.paid.com/nor...
I set this location as the destination for my first of three nights out shooting a summer meteor shower. After a very long drive, I finally arrived to find the entire area was like a ghost town. The COVID-19 pandemic had killed off all hopes of tourism and there was literally nothing to do there.
I have no idea when this resort opened, but I know it was long before the pandemic, it did seem as though there was once an attempt to replace the roof and do some grounds work, but that all had been stopped.
Happy to find myself at such a remote location I spent hours exploring the abandoned resort, then while I waited for night to set in I headed off to find a good vantage point to enjoy the sunset, I found an old unused park and boat ramp to set up my hammock, start shooting timelapse and enjoy some cold beers under the sky.
Once it got dark I made my way back to the resort with my pillows, sleeping bags, camera gear, food and beer and I settled in for a long, dark and quiet night shooting the meteor shower that would be lighting up the skies on this weekend.
My bed was made, my beers were cold and the sky was alive with stars, meteors, shooting stars and more, there was little to no light pollution being so remote and north and the footage I got that night was amazing.
Then, finally at some point in the night it was time to turn in and head to sleep as the one and only guest in this old abandoned northern Ontario resort!

You can keep your homeless people from the cities in the cities, homeless is not a problem in Northern Ontario. I always found it annoying when homeless organizations buy bus tickets for the homeless to northern towns where in the winter it can often get as cold as -40. We do not have the resources for homeless transients from big cities. Small towns tend to look after their own a lot better then in big cities. We also done have the best health care to start with and do not need further people in our small hospitals.

I LOVE the new intro Dave, I want those retro chairs! I was living in Penticton BC at a hotel for a bit and they had the same ones, was like wondering if they would miss 2, but I didn't take them. The place is SO outdated that they were going to do some renos but it cost too much. Since it's called a resort I wouldn't stay there with the outdatedness and the cinder block walls it feels like a LOW MAX PRISION!!!

1st let me say the time lapse meteor shower footage is fantastic!! Interesting explore. I wonder if the room with clothes etc might have been the person who was doing repairs/maintenance on the building (as per the 'to do' list written on that notebook on the table in the hall)? Maybe they were going to fix it up and then abandoned the idea? (no pun intended :-) Thank you Freaktography/UBD for the time and energy you put into these explores and videos! You explorers have helped to keep me entertained during this covid stay at home time. Wishing you and your family a Happy, Healthy 2021.

From the uncovered painted cinder block walls I'd say this was a "not too fancy" and dated resort. The occupied room on the second floor was certainly for a caretaker who lived there after the hotel closed. The handwritten note on the table outside his room are his instructions for each room and there are "fix up" supplies all over the place. I'm wondering if they have the heat running in winter as other than the roof leak there doesn't seem to be any of the usual damage from the building freezing in the rough winters of northern ontario. Maybe they still have a caretaker maintaining the place now and then as there is very little dust and cobwebs. It's a shame you didn't zoom on the alcohol licence next to the bar, that would have given us a good idea as to when the place closed.
@deborahp6450
@deborahp6450 2 жыл бұрын
Why have the heat running if no-one is there. They should let the power co. Know. Apparently they didn't do that in my opinion.
@ve2vfd
@ve2vfd 2 жыл бұрын
@@deborahp6450 this is Canada where sadly winter is way below freezing for several months. if you turn the heat completely off, a building will be ruined by the deep freeze within a few years.

@@ve2vfd Im referring to heat being left on when nobody's home.
@ve2vfd
@ve2vfd 2 жыл бұрын
@@deborahp6450 Yup, I get that. It's what we usually do if we don't want an unoccupied building damaged by the cold. Months of extreme cold (-20F to -40F in that area) in an unheated building meant to be heated will damage the roof, foundations and can crack walls. The owners are still paying for heating so it's possible they have not completely given up on it yet (they may want to keep it sellable).

@@ve2vfd I'm not a professional but usually by this time the owners are usually the bank. They do some things but not all they make sure it's been weatherized. Knowing by experience,however itsosnr mean someone doesn't still own but it wouldn't make sense.

Loved the time lapse video of the stars! Very cool. Not sure of the appeal of this "resort". Cement block walls, very basic rooms, not a great swimming pool. First thing I noticed and I'm only at the reception desk. I use a walker. There are about 8 steps to get up in order to get into the place. How do they expect a walker or wheelchair to get up those steps? It' good to see that they had wheelchair accessibility in the halls though, lol.
