My dad’s in his ‘80s now. He was born in Bangkok near some canals. When he was little, Thailand was still a Japanese puppet state. On one of our last trips back to Bangkok, we were talking about where places were in the city. I asked him where he grew up. He said it didn’t exist anymore due to development. That was kind of sad.

Thanks for a great video portraying the side of Charoen Krung that not so many people visiting it realize it exists. I had been living in the area for 22 years before moving to Europe. Your video make me miss the area, and inspire me to also record Charoen Krung from my point of view - to keep it as a historical evidence of this period in time. In case you haven't visited the souther part of Charoen Krung road starting from the intersection between Chan road to around Thanon Tok (Tok road) yet, I really recommend it. Unlike the hustle and bustle of Bang Rak/Yao warat area, the southern part of Charoen Krung road is more of a quiet residential area. However, that is also the best thing with this area as you can feel and enjoy everyday life of locals even more. There is also another cemetery called Bangkok Protestant Cemetery in the area. This one is one of the last few Christian cemeteries left in Bangkok (The one near Silom got demolished many years ago). Not to mention that this area is also full of many local restaurants that I consider the best in Bangkok. Just to give some examples, there is one Pad Thai stall in Charoen Krung 79 that I dare say that it is much much better than Pad Thai Pratu Pi. You can also find many great muslim restaurants around Charoen Krung 103 and a great dim sum shop near Charoen Krung 74.

@@OTRontheroad Still great, no more "chai's" of course except when irreparable buildings are rebuilt in traditional style. The great brickening came and went, but places still pop up where they can and gentrification proceeds which is good and bad (some great coffee places with oodles of atmosphere now in Shichahai). My maternal grandparents were born in 1920s and 1930s Thailand and moved to the US in 1977, alongside most of my dad's side of the family. They lived in the US for the rest of their lives: I never got to saw my grandpa since he died in 2001, a year before I was born, and my grandma recently passed away a year ago. Despite them apparently Americanizing to the culture, I appreciated them telling me their memories and traditions: of surviving the Allied bombings of Bangkok during WW2 and old Thai pop music from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. My grandma tried to teach me the Thai script but I was too lazy to do so, I still somewhat regret that to this day (even though I speak Thai).

NO ONE beats these guys for info and entertainment in and around Bangkok. Come to think of it no one does it outside Bangkok either which is shocking considering how much there is to see and know out there. Real vacuum (guys...hint hint...roadtrips!). More collaborations could only be a GOOD THING. IF there was any brainpower left in televised market, stations around the world would be knocking on their doors and paying high dollar for shows. Imagine what OT,R and Bangkok Pat could do with that budget. Spinofffs for example. CBS Sunday Morning makes interviews a staple of almost every show as does 60 Minutes. Profiles of amazing everyday people, boggles my mind what COULD be done. I'd suggest getting a media lawyer in for a chat :)

Hi Adam! Love your channel! Did you notice that Thais hold their chopsticks differently from say Japanese or the way you use them? Is it a Chinese technique?
@OTRontheroad Жыл бұрын
I'd say chopsticks are held differently simply because of different materials/shapes/styles- Korea and Japan both use unique styles of chopsticks. In Thailand it's strictly a Chinese-Thai thing. Classic Thai food is eaten by hand or with a spoon-and-fork. Chopsticks here are intended for Chinese-Thai food and are Chinese-style sticks. Hope that answers your question?
@kittenastrophy5951 Жыл бұрын
@@OTRontheroad I hold the chopsticks Japanese style since I don't like the Chinese way. You know, I'm Thai. By the way, most of Thais don't care which style since they don't even know. Just use the way they're convenient with. May be it mixed in between.
