Our Tiny Adventure

Күн бұрын

In this video we're exploring the city of Bangkok in Thailand.
We have opted for the hop on hop off tuk tuk service by www.tuktukhop..... You pay on flat rate and get unlimited rides to the major tourist spots around the city. It was very convenient for us and we feel it was a great value.
We all try some new foods, explore several temples, and walk the streets of Chinatown. I go on a hunt for some mango sticky rice. In the afternoon, we challenge ourselves to a $10 street food challenge at Nang Loeng Market.
Join us! This was a great experience although we faced a few unforeseen challenges. We hope you enjoy.

Tuk tuk name comes from its exhaust sound in the old days. Thailand's famous tuk tuk was based on Japanese micro pickup equipped with 2-stroke engine with less than 600cc. It was modified by Thai mechanics to be a utility vehicle, cheap to run, cheap to maintain. In the old days, you could see vendors go to wet market and bought a lot of ingredients and piled them into tuk tuk to their vending site to set up a food stall. Since it was equipped with 2-stroke engine, the exhaust sounds like "tuk tuk". Over the years, the engine is now 4 strokes and run on a small LPG gas tank instead of petrol due to 3 times cheaper price of LPG. So modern tuk tuk no longer sounds like "tuk tuk", but the name sticks. There are even some electric tuk tuks, but still few in number.

I visited this country to film one of our TV shows few years ago and surprisingly, we did go back along with my friends and their kids. Elephants, temples, and...giant robot fighting shows? Yep, Bangkok has something for everyone, even kids with surprisingly specific interests! Guess what, they even have fish feeding sites where you'll feed the koi fishes using baby bottles!

Wat Pho is an old temple south of the Grand Palace. It is also known as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha rebuilt by King Rama III in 1832. The King also decreed that traditional Thai massage and traditional medicine be inscribed on stone tablets to disseminate the knowledge to the general public. The famous Thai spa and massage are believed to originate from such stone inscription. King Rama III was also known as Merchant Prince because when he was still a prince he conducted trade with China and asked the ship captain to bring back stone sculptures such as Chinese deities, mythical beasts as stabilizing balance in the ship's belly. These stone sculptures are now commonly seen at Wat Pho, Wat Arun and the Grand Palace. When President Obama had only one day to tour a Thai temple, US Embassy recommended this temple due to its unique architecture, history and beautiful reclining Buddha. Note all three famous temples: Wat Phra Kaew in the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun, there are two Yaksa Guardians (Hindu/Buddhist giant deity) at the entrance of the temple. Wat Pho's reclining Buddha is not the largest in Thailand. It's the largest in Bangkok or you can say it's the largest enclosed reclining Buddha in Thailand. There are larger reclining Buddhas but they are outdoor, facing elements.

Naga is Thai/Sanskrit word for a Cobra Snake. Durian has high sulfur content, which gives the smell but it is a precursor to all terpenes, terpenoids, DNA synthesis and protein folding structure, all steroids are made from sulfur. It makes your skin glow and is anti-aging. if you eat durian for a week, you will see your skin glow and eating durian regularly, makes you look young and cuts your age by 10 to 20 years.

I have eaten twelve varieties of durians in SE Asia, including Monthong in Thailand and Musanking in Malaysia, which are considered the best. I had a love for durian immediately many years ago when I tried. Durian season is Jun - Sept. Trying durian at other times is not ideal. Some like it, some don't. Not usually an acquired taste. Just try a fresh one by itself someday to give it a real chance. ❤

Thailand's Chinese community was created more than 240 years ago when King Rama I built the Grand Palace and relocated the capital from Thonburi to the other side of Chao Phraya River opposite Wat Arun on the land formerly occupied by Chinese immigrants. They were then relocated to the outskirt of the Old City along Chao Phraya River at Charoenkrung Rd and Yaowarat Rd (not yet built). Siam then Bangkok was known as Venice of the East as canals and Chao Phraya River were the main transport routes. The first road was constructed in the reign of King Rama IV named Charoen Krung Road, running along Chao Phraya river (River of King). Later Yaowarat Road was constructed to link up with Charoen Krung in the reign of King Rama V. Both roads were the first commercial hub of Siam with the first modern buildings built along the two roads, thus began the China Town legend. Originally Charoenkrung Rd and Yaowarat Rd were two-way traffic but they became one-way traffic about 60 years ago. China Town was the center of rice trade in those days as there was/is nearby Chao Phraya River pier bringing rice from provinces into Bangkok. It is no longer the center of rice trade as road/rail transport is highly developed over the years. For at least 60 years, China Town is the center of gold trading. There are about a dozen gold shops on Yaowarat Rd selling bullions and gold ornaments. Daily gold price quote is prescribed by Gold Trade Association in China Town. There are two famous temples in China Town. Temple of the Golden Buddha (Wat Traimit), right behind the main Chinatown gate at the start of Yaorawat Road, boasts the largest solid gold Buddha in the world. ฿40 entry fee. Wat Mangkon Kamalawat (Wat Leng Noei Yi) is the largest and most important Chinese Buddhist temple in Bangkok. It is an emblem of Chinese architecture and the religious heart of the Chinese community living in China Town and other areas of Bangkok. Free entry. For the last decade, Thailand China Town, the largest China Town in the world, is the place to go at night for delicious food/drink. It is arguably the largest open night market in the world. It is estimated that about 15-20% Thai people are of Chinese descents.

Naga Prok attitude : translated as "sheltered-by-the-naga Buddha" The attitude references an episode in the Buddha's life after reaching the enlightenment. He travelled to various kingdoms to teach and spent the rest of his time meditating. One night, a heavy storm raged in the forest where he was meditating. A nāga by the name of Mucalinda (Mujalind) saw him meditating under harsh weather. Mucalinda decided to coil around his āsana (seat) and use himself as a shield to protect the Buddha from raindrops. credit : Wikipedia 😃

It is believed that Naga King is the underworld ruler and is a devout Buddhist disciple. Thus, sometimes you can see an image of Buddha meditating under the tree with Naga King guarding behind with his 7 heads above Buddha's head to protect him from wind/rain. There are also standalone Naga statute along Meking River on both sides of Thailand and Laos, the most famous of which is at Nakhon Phanom with 7 heads. It might be noted that one of the largest royal barge of Thai King has 7-heads Naga as its head. The mortal enemy of Naga is Garuda (a mythical flying beast) which is supposed to be God Rama's mount. Indonesia and Thailand deem Garuda as high class mythical beast and Indonesia's National Carrier is "Garuda". Garuda is also the official symbol of Thai King, thus official document would have Garuda symbol at its head. When there is an official royal announcement from the King or Palace, the initial TV screen features Garuda for a minute before the royal text appears together with reading sound. BTW, the marble temple is presided by arguably the most beautiful Buddha statute in Thailand. It was constructed to clone Buddha statute Phra Phutthachinarat in Phitsanulok province. Legend states that when King Rama V built the marble temple, he would like to move Phra Phutthachinarat statute to this temple, but was opposed by Phitsanulok natives who highly revere this statute. So he commanded the artisan to build a clone statute instead.
