Those 'salon doors' (as you called them) are known as 'pintu pagar' (literally ‘fence door’ in Baba Malay). This is a traditional type of door used in Peranakan terrace houses. The pintu pagar is a half-height outer door that acts as a ‘fence’ providing security and privacy when the front door is left open for ventilation during the day. Finely carved and ornate pintu pagar served as symbols of wealth for Peranakan families, as they are visible to all visitors and the first things to be seen by anyone walking past the home. As a reflection of Singapore's heritage as a trading port and crossroads between the east and west, these pintu pagar often feature an eclectic mix of Chinese and European motifs consisting of lions, flowers, squirrels and vases.

thank you very much for this information, having never encountered these types of things I just sort of equate it to what I have experience with, saloon doors is what we would call them, kind of makes sense if you think about how saloon doors may have come into existence back in the US Wild West days..... history is maybe less of a straight line than any of us might think!

The big trees are called Heritage Trees. They are dotted all over the island and developers and construction can't removed them without prior approval from the government, or they could be heavily fine for damaging the trees and "public shaming" on local media. The most concentrated ones are at the Botanical Gardens. Blair Road is one of many places you could see shophouses. The instagrammable ones are in Joo Chiat area. If you go beyond the big tree that you mentioned, you'll see what's left of the old train tracks of KTM (Keretapi Tanah Melayu), Malaysian Railway train depots. There used to be trains plying from Singapore to Malaysia and Thailand as well as the last stop for the Eastern & Oriental Express before it moved to the Woodlands Checkpoint. Anyhoo, there are more to Singapore than what's available in the tourist guide as well as what you can see at Marina Bay. Did you know we have a hot spring park, a natural history museum and much more than the usual stuff?

Thank you for your comment! This is great information and makes me even more excited to explore the city and the island. We love doing things off the beaten path-just stumbling around a place until we find something interesting-and then awesome people like you point us to even better spots. Thank you again, and you’re so lucky to live in such an amazing place as Singapore!

@@MarkandLindasXadventures Anyway here are 15 Things to do in Singapore beside Marina Bay and Orchard:- 1. Want to avoid crowds at any of the sky terraces, visit the free SkyGarden at Capitaspring or use the local EZ-Link card (purchase at MRT station for $10 and top up extra $5) to go up to the sky terrace at Skyvillle at Dawson, a public housing near Chinatown. 2. Visit Haw Par Vlla, free outdoor theme park based on Chinese Mythology and Legends. They have a paid museum dedicated to Hell as well inside. 3. For WWII buffs, a visit to Reflection at Bukit Chandu and Former Ford Factory as well as visit the free Fort Siloso at Sentosa. 4. Visit the only public hot spring in Singapore at Sembawang Hot Spring Park. 5. Stroll down the many nature parks in Singapore. Eg. MacRitchie Reservoir for the treetop walk, the Thomson Nature Park with its abandoned houses that have been swallowed by nature, Lower Seletar Reservoir for the dam. 6. Visit Hort Park at Alexandra to check out the various mini gardens. 7. And then hike up to the highest pedestrian bridge in Singapore, the Henderson Wave. 8. Visit the Kranji War Memorial with the graves of fallen soldiers as well as ex-presidents of Singapore. 9. Hike the Sungei Buloh Nature Reserve to see wild crocodiles and migratory birds. 10. Take a boat ride down to Pulau Ubin and explore the rustic island life and visit the Chek Jawa Wetlands to see interesting marine lives. 11. Explore Singapore’s largest outlet mall at IMM in Jurong. 12. While in the northwest side of the island, try visit the Raffles Marina Lighthouse. 13. Visit any of the surrounding small islands of Singapore like St John Islands or Kusu Island. 14. If you like art, visit the temporary Singapore Art Museum at a warehouse district in between Tanjong Pagar and Harbourfront. 15. Visit the Natural History Museum to see dinosaur bones and other animals that used to roam Singapore.

Oh and try visit the Geylang Serai area, that's where the heart of the Muslim community is. Kampung Gelam near Bugis is the face of the Muslim community, for tourist to take photos and enjoy the atmosphere but if you want an authentic experience, Geylang Serai is the place. Just don't go to the other Geylang area. That would be the red light district
