It's kind of a shame you only got one day in the San Juan region as there are some really cool trails in the area. Definitly a place to spend a week and explore. I would suggest mid-late July / early August as most of the snow shold be gone and the rain hasn't completely moved in yet. You definitly missed out by not being able to do Holy Cross City road.
