If you're going to interpret the film you must include that even in the messed up world within the movie, there was something considered seriously wrong/ abnormal with "the child" leading to many of the problems. In the end he discovers that it isn't even developing into anything at all, and is likely just suffering. He suddenly decides to end its hopeless existence, likely causing him severe emotional distress. As in depth as your analysis goes you seemed to ignore all implications of "the child" being completely abnormal/unhealthy in some unspecified way, which to me seemed a very large factor. Also Henry really slept with the woman next door. She absolutely witnessed the horrific creature in his apartment. That's where it was observed and also began bothering her right away. She had to have been in his apartment and to have seen "the child" in order to then be disturbed by the vision of Henry being it. That was her projection on Henry. Really appreciate this video still. Im surprised at the lack of long form discussion on youtube about this film.

When I was a kid and I first saw eraser head the post apocalyptic visuals paired with the bizarre appearance of the woman in the radiator I made a connection between her and the concept of radiation. I thought she was a personification of a nuclear explosion as her hair and cheeks brought to mind the appearance of a mushroom cloud. This association was strengthened by the blinding white light at the end of the movie after Henry hugs the woman. Her song “in heaven everything is fine” made me believe that she through nuclear annihilation is the personification of death. The rest of the imagery of the movie passed right over my 12 year old head so rest of the movie’s themes don’t make sense under that analysis alone.

Interesting! Thanks for this! The abortion theme never hit home with me, I always saw the baby as being part of Henry, a metaphor for an idea, Henry’s judgement of his idea and eventual killing due to his disgust in his own humanity, he destroys the unformed idea which while gives him peace it erases his mark in history. He explores the reaction of his imagined loved ones for his terrible idea. If he had let the idea live, would he have kept his head?

I really appreciate your perspective and how your analysis deals in general concepts and ideas rather then attempts at literal interpretations like many other KZbin channels analyzing his work. I don’t think work like Lynch’s can be explained with language alone.

Not all right-wing libertarians are against abortion. I think that's something worth pointing out. I think it's also worth mentioning the possibility that Lynch may be using abortion as a metaphor for something else (self-destruction or literalized internal fears for example), not as literal abortion.

Excellent analysis. I also love that you threw in the Deadly Premonition whistle theme as a nod to that very Lynchian game.

I've heard on a podcast that Lynch became pregnant with the idea of Eraserhead while living in Philly. As a Phoenixville native I'm strangely proud. Limericks spouting chimneys were always just a mile down the road visually as I remember.

After watching this film a week ago, I immediately said out loud, as the credits rolled: "Oh. This is about Abortion." And, something I couldn't shake off, was the fact the abortion aspects were framed as inhumane and violent. Which made me realize, it's anti-abortion. I didn't want to accept this, because I never viewed David Lynch as being conservative. Boy was I wrong 😅 I thought I was reaching a bit, because other people haven't analyzed that part as deeply as you did. You put everything together in your fabulous and insightful personal analysis that I totally agree with.

Great Video. To me Eraserhead seems also to be a gnostic tale: Birth is an accident, made by the Demiurge putting life into suffering forms of individuals, who try to escape the world to get back to the real God (as Henry, the normal guy, does). The man with the switch levers is the Demiurge who creates life, knowing that it will be sickness, fear and imperfection, while the lady in the radiator stands for the heaven of the real God, killing the sperms to interrupt further existence of the "bad world". Incarnation seems to be a failure in every aspect in this movie. Of course there are some parallels between Gnosticism and Hinduism but the "hard" variation of gnostic thinking fits better (in Twin Peaks Vedanta/Hinduism is more appropriate). Eraserhead is the darkest and most consistent film of Lynch. Love, compassion seem to be to weak to revoke suffering and fear although the baby seems to need love - on the other hand it already shows a horrifying cynical touch in the scene, where it laughs at Henry. In Twin Peaks the "early" Cooper stands for humanity, justice, humor, enjoyment (coffee, cake etc.) and the believing in love and beauty of nature, so there is still some hope for the world, in Eraserhead salvation and healthy connections are no-goes, they are only possible in heaven. A thing I always wondered about are the cheeks of the lady, she looks like a mixture of Monroe and a hamster. But what does she stockpile? The saved souls? But how can these souls be free in an oral cavity? "You got your good things, and I got mine" ?! What kind of heaven is this, where things still are separated as in bourgeois possession-based capitalism? :-) So I always thought, the radiator lady is not trustworthy and her "negative" sides are just hidden but existent. No hope in this movie. But still one of my favorites pictures. A not well known movie, which reminds me in many ways of Lynch is the black-and-white film "Cremator" by Juraj Herz from 1968. I'm very sure, you would like it. It's an absolute masterpiece in many aspects and also very dark. Here with english subtitles: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a2PSnWmCasuSaqM

From one Lynch fan to another, which of his projects are your favorite? I’m very curious to know as it seems your more in tune with his spiritual themes than most (judging from what I’ve seen of the twin peaks video)! You could even rank them if you’d want! I’m currently obsessed with Inland Empire myself but I’m rewatching Eraserhead this weekend so who know if that’ll change lmao

I really liked this. If the abortion theory is correct though, Lynch described the last part of the film in an interview as "a very happy ending." He seems like a guy who usually says what he means, so wouldn't this make him pro-choice? Also, any theory as to why the mushroom cloud picture disappears from the wall at the end?
@FRAMEINTOFOCUS
@FRAMEINTOFOCUS 2 жыл бұрын
Good eye! I think that one was intentional but he never really does symbollic continuity errors atleast i havent found any. I didn't include it for some odd reason. I have no idea why. Lol I think the interview you are talking about is the one when David Lynch is in his 30's and it's black and white and they are by the dead cat. Yes. It's a very happy ending for Henry. Hence why he is in heaven at the end. The nuclear bomb above the tree has been taken down because the pregnancy is no longer looming. It's up to the audience to perceive whether killing the mostrous half born child is moral. But the language of the film to me shows otherwise, having the baby be sentient, and kinda cute in some shots, having the child be similar to a loaf of bread on a table kinda makes me think that the child is a good thing in terms of moral framing. 💡 Be uploading another soon! Stay tuned.

Ok, but if everything else is symbolic why are looking at the baby/pregnancy/abortion as literal? You consider the spiritual aspect to Lynch’s work and understanding of the world, so don’t you think birth/pregnancy/abortion will also be used as metaphorical spiritual symbols?

@FRAMEINTOFOCUS
@FRAMEINTOFOCUS 3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't call him traditionally conservative like traditional american conservatism. I would definitely call him conservative. He voted for Reagan 4 years after Eraserhead was released. I would say he is heavily inspired by a conservative hindu orthodoxy (as well as other world religions). In the mid-70's he stopped eating meat, and stopped drinking right after he had his first child, along with practicing meditation and drawing religious art. David Lynch is no marxist and Todd Mcgowan knows this, but Mcgowan uses his work as a jumping off point to discuss alienation under capitalism. And that's what I was referencing. Today Lynch is much more left leaning, but I still think he has the same convictions regarding the subject of this video. - Thanks for the question!

The movie is trash just like everything else the man has written & directed. While Henry is walking he steps into a puddle with his right foot and then when he gets back to his apartment he takes off his left shoe and sock to dry it. The biggest goof I made was watching all his movies thinking that maybe they had some value but I was mistaken and I'm certainly not going to watch you explain it for another 2 hours. lmao
