A few interesting points to add: Everyone who's ever read Harry Potter is already familiar with liches, as Voldemort is an excellent example of one, he just had multiple phylacteries. There's actually a naturally good kind of elven lich called a Baelnorn, these are highly honoured, as they sacrifice their link to Arvandor (Elf heaven) to eternally watch over the people. The reason so few liches are good, is mainly because the established methods require the sacrifice of human souls to maintain the phylactery, not a very saintly activity.

A "Good Lich" is usually Lawful Nuetral with a strong moral code, or is lawful good with an "ends justify the means" mentality. The problem is that, argueably, those are both too morally ambiguous for their supposedly good allignment. Most people wouldn't say that they are of a good allignment. It is really that to be a good Lich is a relative term, not a measure of kindness and altruistic intentions.
@petsan97
@petsan97 4 жыл бұрын
@@mythdragia5866 Dunno if it's possible in D&D with the currently established methods. But most likely it'd be pretty much like with Voldemort. You'd have to destroy every phylactery in turn to permanently kill them. And presumably a portion of their power would be lost each time as another part of their soul is sucked into the afterlife.
@petsan97
@petsan97 4 жыл бұрын
@@bodaciouschad True, as such the only way a lich could be considered a "good person" with no "but's" is if they're either a baelnorn or found a way to maintain lichdom without the sacrifice of human souls. Plus, there was that story about Astoshan, the grey necromancer who was always very diplomatic about his craft, even asking good people for permission before raising their corpses. And when he became a lich, he used diplomatic ties with nearby cities to have them send death-row inmates to fuel his phylactery. He's probably as close as you get to a "good" lich with the standard methods.

@@onatyungul872 I'm always annoyed that Necromancers are portrayed as purely evil. Your ideas are good, personally I always liked the idea for a Necromancer seeing their art less as "creating mindless servants" and more "giving something that died a second life", maybe willingly ignoring that simple undead are in fact just puppets. Or someone who loves life and living things so much and/or is so afraid of death and losing loved ones that they use necromancy if traditional medicine or magical healing doesn't work anymore.

Litches are tailor made to be the big bads of a campaign. They're highly intelligent, incredibly powerful, incredibly evil and, most of all, thanks to their phylactery you can easily have them be recurring threats without worrying about the adventurers killing him too early (something some DM's encounter as a problem for their campagns). Yes, they're a bit EASY (I think its really common to have a litch be the main antagonist) but as they say it's a classic for a reason. Plus an evil undead wiard is always cooler than a normal evil wizard.

I’m planning out a campaign with a sort of murder-mystery style, and the leading suspect is a necromancer and known criminal who supposedly underwent a transformation into a lich right before the murders started. The murders are extremely violent, with the bodies being diced up right after the killing, and no trace of the murderer. PLOT TWIST the necromancer actually failed the ritual and turned into a bone claw, which bonded with a small time lackey for a BBEG in an upcoming campaign, who went insane and became a serious necromancer. The Boneclaw is performing the murders while the necromancer has quietly set himself up as the king of the criminal underworld.

I used to see nightmares about Lich from Adventure time I was so obsessed that my mc skin or usernames were all Lich to decrease my fear. İt was like worshipping, if I spread the name it would stay away. But it got worse in 7th grade. I couldnt sleep and then started to learn about masons, illuminati and stuff. Even tho many of thr things I "learned" were only depressive conspiracy theories, I was dumb enough to believe all of them on that times. After a while I was so obsessed that I was staring blankly at the roof thinking about how meaningless the life was for hours. And then night comes. You have to hide your fear. So I was pretending to be asleep at the couch so my parents would leave me alone, but since I didnt have phone on that age I read books. Even if boring, it was the only relaxation at night to hear my broken watch do that beep sound every hour until morning. And then I "wake up" half asleep and go to school. The day repeats itself and I watch Adventure Time around 11:30 PM. I stare at the TV with fear in my heart, with remote control on my hand, ready to change the channel to songs for babies channel if a Lich related episodeappears. İf it does, 1) My body freezes like a sleep paralyss. I can watch TV, but cant close my eyes. I suffer with fear until the end of the episode and then lay on the ground crying inside (because if I cry loud my parents will see how I get scared and wont allow my only entertainment in the evenings to forget about hard lessons and my not very fond "friends" for at least a few hours: TV. Or more specificely, Cartoon Network. On those times, most of all legendary cartoons were still going. Regular show, flapjack, old true Ben10, AT, Steven Universe, Clarence, Uncle Grandpa etc.)2) I run to living room screaming, pretending I saw a cockroach or a spider or something. Or it just doesnt appear and I enjoy my 15 minute episode without a risk of pissing on my pants until the next episodr comes up and my deadly await starts again until the 4th episode comes. (İt was 4 eps in a row on that times) I loved talking about cartoons to my one and only friend at school, Efe. I only used to go to his home. Had no other close friends. Before he stopped contacted me and ignored my affection. I just wanted to talk about my problem I had that started when I was in primary school until 8th grade where I had to prepare for highschool exam so didnt have much time for TV. I am currently 9th grade. I am kinda ashamed I had such experience but its always better to have a story to tell.

the term ''lich'' isn't from old English, it's far more older, it's from ancient Scandinavian at the time when there was no Engles (old English people) in Britain, they were located in the south-west coast of Denmark to be more precise. In Scandinavia the lich term ''lich'' was used to designate a shadowy or sometimes dark humanoid shape presence in a burial ground area which could be seen or felt during the night, frequency of the sighting was most likely extremely rare according to the very few writing on that matter. (Actually the written document came much later and were translation from skald poetry/song).

Broadly speaking in DnD there are 3 types of lich If you do it yourself with no help, you'll be a lich whose body becomes virtually indestructible. You'll always try and possess your own body in that case, and creating a spare body is a huge chore. If you ask for help you'll be a lich without a set body. Anytime you're destroyed your body is destroyed, but you will reform within a few feet of your phylactory with a brand new bod. Finally if you're specifically an elf, and have a really good reason to break the cycle of elven reincarnation and stay on the material plane, the elven gods can turn you into a baelnorn, which is basically the first kind of lich but with the added benefit of not needing to consume souls to maintain your power. This basically never happens though, because most elves think this is way worse than death, which makes sense when you endlessly reincarnate and get to chill in heaven between lives .

The art work you use is crazy awesome. Great video! ❤ Liches should be some of the greatest foes anyone could imagine. The depths, levels of their plots should be frightening and dangerous on many levels. All victims of a Liche add to its new defenses, or feed its defenses. The magic potential of a Liche should far exceed the scant limitations of a Players Handbook and other books by far. Wow....

Still remember a fun book with a group of adventurers that are exploring a tomb only to see a lich enter the corridor they're in. At that moment the entire team has the exact same thought, "We'll we're dead."

Yes and no. A horcruxe splits the soul into pieces and the user doesn’t die to create it. A phylactery contains an entire soul and the user has to die to create it. She obviously borrowed from the idea though.

Glad I could catch this upload this late. I would love to see more D&D content from this channel. If you can carve a niche into the D&D community, then I reckon your growth would increase tremendously. Some content creators already go into far more detail than you did here, but they are few and far between. Overviews like this one are probably your best bet going forward, intertwined with your SCP videos. Remember that your community loves what you do, no matter what. If you are tired of SCP uploads, then it is what it is. We will appreciate you no matter what.

Liches in my fantasy world are creatures of Hell that traded their souls for power and immortality and serve each of the 13 Devils. There’s only 13 liches though, so one per devil. For example, my lich Mongoriath serves the devil Andromalius. He’s also the oldest and most powerful lich of all 13 of them.

Couldn't a lich, technically, get the help of a wizard to create a pocket dimension to store the phylactery--and then kill the wizard, so now there is literally no way to get to said pocked dimension? Asking for...research purposes.
