Hey, dev here! Wow. Incredible video! Loved your interpretations, especially the thoughts on how there's this sense of mental/emotional transition between each space, not just purely physical. You've kind of hit the nail on the head with many ideas, such as areas like the suburbs intending to represent a snapshot of leaving behind childhood for adulthood. You're free to revisit these places anytime, but everyone else has moved on, so all that's left are your memories, whether good or bad. All you have is a camera, the physical representation of your character trying to recapturing those memories, all while being reminded by the grainy smudges in each photograph that they shouldn't be there- these places aren't the same anymore. The "entities" you encounter are too, people like you, reliving old times, refusing to let go. Discarding the camera after waking up signifies you're ready to finally move on with a new perspective, as you perfectly interpreted. Thanks so much for taking the time to make this video, I'm so glad the game resonated with you. Cheers!

I was born in 1989 and the 90's-Y2K era holds a special place in my heart. Liminal spaces evoke a lot of things. I recently got a powerful flashlight & got hooked on going exploring at night with my dogs in the Oregon woods & exploring different locations. Exploring obscure areas, dense Oregon wilderness, abandoned places is so intriguing to me. One of my favorite things about the Liminal genre is that parts of the 90's feels like it got saved & documented. So much has changed since then. It was easy to lose images since digital cameras were in their early stages then. I wish we didn't change our approach, vibe, aesthetic that the 90's-Y2K era had. The unique imperfect buildings, homes, Random stores, really providing a sense of uniqueness to your local home towns. Nowadays everything feels so bland, soulless, minimalistic, as if you are visiting the same place over and over again with no unique creativity to anything.. I swear things in the 90's used to take pride in who could be the most creative and come up with the things where people can have the most fun. We need to reconnect to that.

What you said about time seeming non-linear rang true for me. Back in the late 2000s, I used to walk around my high school after everyone had left-- those moments felt like they existed outside of time as I explored. The atmosphere also allowed for the introspection you described.

i love this game more than anything. saw smii7y play it once and ever since i've been obsessed with it. i watch every playthrough just to see everyone's different perspective on not only the photography, but also the different scenarios they think are going to play through. some people still think something might show up even when the pictures are always empty and i love it.

Brilliant game design and I loved the analysis! I work in a hospital and thought how interesting of a setting that would have been for a game like this. Especially representing that transition between life and death.

Honestly given the green light and the nature of a hole, the scene of the suburb is eerily similar to an episode of Ed Edd N Eddy about the same thing happening, down to the snowy suburb and everything

in regards to the Airport section I experienced something similar to this, I flew into Colorado Springs at like 3am from Phoenix, the place was deserted except for 2 employees around the arrivals info area and my fellow passengers

One of the scariest atmospheres I've ever felt is the Moira Asylum chapter in Thief 2014. There are some classic scares in it but the way the dust floats in the air, the blue and gray color palette, the 'patients' you see in their rooms which disappear when you open their doors and the whispering right next to your ear as you're looking for abandoned trinkets. It just hits different. I forgot the name (Shalebridge Cradle I think?) is another chapter in a Thief game, Deadly Shadows, that is known as one of the scariest chapters in a game that isn't supposed to be a horror game at all. But it works. They might be fun to look into I'd say. They hit different because you're a thief, an often unwelcome presence used to and most comfortable in the darkness. When you're suddenly not alone in those shadows you feel safe in, it makes you shiver to the bone.

Don’t forget about the Cathedral missions! When Thief dips into horror it always goes hard, the feeling that the entire building is against you is so overwhelming.

ever heard of the book/movie by Stephen King called The Langoliers ? Its about creatures that come to devour the past after it is abandoned by people who live in the present. CGI is pretty horrible but the concept is neat

where i live there is an abandoned subway track which you can access by jumping over a fence. one time i was walking it (part of it is outdoors) and two people appeared in the distance. when they walked pasted me i noticed they were continuing into the tunnel of the track. i asked them where it leads. they said it leads into one of the (used) subway stations and you can just walk up there apparently. i didnt go into the tunnel because its dilapidated and im scared. but would be shway to follow the tunnel to the end.

I had to work during the freeze in Texas a few years back. Only the emergency lighting was on and I was the only person there. Pretty creepy. Also one time I was in a pretty big 24 hour laundromat like 2am alone and the power went out. Absolutely terrifyingly being in the laundromat. Using my phone flashlight the ceiling fans still spinning slow random washer and dryer doors are open and they were front loading so the doors cast shadows down the halls.

You say that the gas station has given you no reason to assume any horror. I disagree. You have been driving down a lonely road, in the middle of the night. You see a remote gas station, you pull in to get fuel. It is open for business, but there is no one on the property. That whole set-up is one cue after another that something bad is happening, or has happened, that there is a reason for suspense. Why is this gas station open, but vacant? No one is anywhere, at a place opwn for business? You are alone and isolated.

38:13 with the mannequins is my favorite part. One side of my brain is saying “These are mannequins, if you turn your back on them they will not stay still, this sanctum of decay is their territory and you are not welcome, you are not alone and you should be afraid of that, get out get out GET OUT GET OUT.” The other side of my brain is saying “GYATT 🥵🍑🥴😳😭.”
