I really love how you cover the entire estate, especially the grounds. Little explorations make a great program! Thanks!

Thank you for your lovely comment and for watching! Yes, I like to give a thorough exploration where possible to give a picture of the estate as a whole. You may have noticed that I found the old layout of the gardens and cascade particularly interesting on this trip 😂

Great tour! Very thorough and informative, and at a stately pace suitable to the house. I believe those Delft pagodas standing in front of the fireplaces are called tulipieres (tulip holders). One remarkable aspect of this house is that it's located in a narrow asymmetrical valley. I can't tell whether the hillscape to the north has settled over the centuries, or whether the builders really intended to bury the right side of the East front into the hillside.

Thanks for your nice feedback, I'm glad that you found the video interesting. I also wondered about the hillscape to the north. It does seem to have changed slightly since the early 18th century and it would be interesting to find out more. I shall use the term 'tulipieres' next time I come across said items at a house. Thanks for watching and taking an interest. Adam :)

@@AdamExploresBritain I realized after watching the video by Aquila Aerial Photography titled "The Cotswolds AONB - Dyrham Park" that the right side of the East front is not part of the house at all, but merely a wall to balance the greenhouse aesthetically and perhaps to secure the privacy of the northern part of the house. Thanks again, Adam!

Hello Adam! Thank you very much for this new (and very nice) video. I was reading about the house and you were spot on; the staircase is made of American walnut. Mr William Blathwayt served for a time as auditor general of Virginia and owned quite a great deal of land over there. The collection of paintings is of great quality and consists mostly of Dutch pictures. Regards from Buenos Aires!

The book Remains of the Day is a fantastic read, I have the DVD but have still not gotten round to watching it. Anyway, this was in my recommended list as I love old houses etc. This house, especially the exterior, is stunning, not too big, not too small, the type of house I'd live in. I like your subdued manner...You said towards the end of the video 'If you turn around you can see it's raining' when referring to the old water cascade that are no more 😊 Seriously, nice video! Shame about the deer because they would add a touch of quality to the surroundings that no amount of money could match. 👍

Hi Adam- I'm @2:37 and I had to stop to comment. When I read the caption, I thought we'd be going on a nice getaway, to a stately home. I only wish, it had begun as a proper visit, by proceeding through the main gate and down a direct drive to the house, only to be greeted by staff and ushered in, under the protective shield of umbrellas. Well, imagine my surprise when we just veered off to the left, and down a side road that obviously, appears to be provided for lower level, service help. I'll now, return to the video and hope for more formality, but let me assure you, if we even so much as stumble into a servant's area, I'm leaving! If I have to, I'll call a cab! Who needs ya? BTW~ could we have come on an uglier day? I mean, REALLY! The rain hasn't stopped since we got in the car! Now, slide over and let me take the wheel! I've got to get to the rest of this video. Some of us have things to do, and places to go! 🤣 ~Fantasy Seeking, James

Haha, yes, I was following your sense of humour. I was at work at the time viewing the messages on my phone, so waited until I was home to reply. It did make me chuckle, so thanks for that! I can't believe it! We abandoned the vehicle and now, we're stumbling through the brush, like vagabonds? This is unbelievable. Am I to understand, that we're going to forge our way across the estate grounds, all the way to the door, and in the rain, no less? Augh! What will our host think of us, when we arrive in the great hall, sweating from the hike, briar beset, rain-soaked & dripping wet? How embarrassing!

Do you memorize the whole tour book before you go?! You give so much information!
@AdamExploresBritain
@AdamExploresBritain Жыл бұрын
I usually spend a day or two (not all day) researching in old guidebooks and online and have a sheet with me with bulletpoints to remind me of the main points. Then when I'm at the location several days later I can remember most of the information but the bulletpoints remind me of things that I might have forgotten etc and then I can elaborate a bit from memory. Apart from Alton Towers, where I'm a bit of an expert as that's my favourite old estate and I've been visiting for years. Country house estates have been my weird indulgence for many years though :)

I know it was a dreary day,but I thought the whole place was rather gloomy.I know that light levels have to be kept low,but the NT go too far in my opinion.It’s very reminiscent of Petworth built about the same time & with the same stygian gloom!Sad that a lot of the gardens seem to have gone.
