We're on a journey to document and discuss every attraction ever! Body Wars was a motion simulator ride located in the Wonders of Life pavilion at Disney's Epcot theme park, operational from 1989 to 2007. Directed by Leonard Nimoy with special effects by Industrial Light & Magic, this seven-minute attraction redefined Walt Disney World... until Star Tours opened up just a couple months later.

I live in Miami, and I went to Disney all the time when I was a kid from the late 90’s till mid 2000’s. I personally LOVED riding body wars! And I still remember almost the entire ride. This was one of childhood rides I can never forget

Body Wars, and Wonders of Life as a whole, was one of the most fascinating facets of Epcot history that I regret missing out on growing up. Even now as an adult who is unable to overlook the existential nightmare that is getting miniaturized in order to enter the human body, I'd give anything to experience this ride. The whole novelty, the narrative tone, the hard 80s sci-fi aesthetic, not to mention simulator rides are just one of my absolute favorite things in theme parks. Funny how Epcot at one point had _two_ attractions that shrunk their guests. Dom, I'm gealous of your Gelatoni plush

i got to go in 1985 and actually see those "boring educational" rides. they were actually pretty awesome. even as a teenager (yes, i'm that old) i thought they were great.

I will say as a kid I loved this ride. It was so cool thinking we were inside someone’s body. I remember it made my mom sick but for me I loved it.

When I was a kid I was just happy that body wars had a short wait, even though it grossed me out. I also remember the wonders of life audio challenge thing vividly. “Is this the sound of pouring rain…. Or sizzling bacon?!” The stationary bikes were also quite fun.

The largest credits in any theme park are Main Street in Disneyland and Magic Kingdom. A tour guide explained that all the windows in the buildings have names of people who contributed to the park and at the end at the hub is Walt’s name…. The director.

The plot for Body Wars was originally an Isaac Asimov story called Fantastic Voyage which was also made into a movie. You could also perhaps include Innerspace starring Dennis Quaid, Meg Ryan and Martin Short.

Really like this format. As the guy who commented the famous loosely talk about theme park comment, I think this is a solid in between for the podcast and your other KZbin content. I think for next attractions to talk about, I think more maybe lesser known defunct attractions could be fun. I mean sure, every theme park ride will be covered but I think doing stuff that might not have as much content out there as more famous defunct rides like Horizons or Great Movie Ride would be fun

I rode this ride in 1991 when I was 8 and what I remember, I didn't got sick from it. I was rather thrilled by it, even if rode Star Tours the day before (we went to Magic Kingdom on day one, Disney MGM-Studios on day two, then Epcot Center on day three). Even if I get grossed out by blood and guts, like Mortal Kombat fatalities, Body Wars doesn't. I guess it have to with perspective and people who get grossed out just don't have perspective of things.

29:48 The movie you're thinking of is called INNERSPACE starring Martin Short! It was inspired by Fantastic Voyage. Innerspace released to theaters in 1987, when Body Wars was being developed. The movie genre of people being miniaturized was popular at the time, with another Epcot attraction Honey I Shrunk The Audience opening in 1994 and operating at the same time as Body Wars. Another interesting connection is Innerspace was produced by Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment, who Disney was co-producing with for Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Honey I Shrunk The Kids 1989 release included the short Roger Rabbit Tummy Trouble. There is a whole web of Hollywood connections scratching the surface here. Please do a video about Honey I Shrunk The Audience! The Magic Eye Theater has been relegated to showing movie trailers, I wish Disney would bring it back in a limited run for its 30th anniversary.

I worked at epcot from 2003-2005 was opening team for mission space. Around the time wonders started going seasonal. Which was during the Eisner era, of course, it was because wonders lost its sponsor. The unauthorized zone was about safety because you could've " died". You get to the brain by going through the blood brain bearer. The ship ran out of power because it was supposed to be a short trip and trying to traverse the heart and shooting the laser drained the power. You get thanked for your mission because you're the first team to map the area you went through. The motion sickness was due to the gimbal's miss alignment over time. Star tours suffered the same thing and then they found a fix for it but never applied it to body wars because money and Eisner penny pinching era. I miss it so most.

Also, even before firing the laser, Bravo 229 was slowly bleeding to death, because while racing through the heart, the ship's fuel cell got torn loose.
@mevb
@mevb 5 күн бұрын
No, it's not the shooting of the laser that causes the Body Probe to lose power! When you go through the heart, you lose the main fuel cell for some ambigious reason (it could be the pressure instide the heart that causes it) and you run low on power really fast (you suddenly have 50 % when you lose the fuel cell, then in a cut line when you go through the lugns (which was shortened because of you swing around for 20 seconds) that you're down to 25 %. I can't believe people miss this crucial information!

It is sad the current Disney leadership is not interested in creating new edutainment attractions which is why we may not see another Epcot-like park. Some of the best Disney park attractions created are Spaceship Earth and Horizons.

I had the displeasure of riding this as a kid. I hated both roller coasters and human body imagery so it was literally my worst nightmare 🫣 I look back on it now with respect and morbid curiosity, but seeing any wonders of life imagery still gives me the creep factor!

I rode Body Wars in 1996. The best part of this ride was it was a thrill ride which Epcot at the time was lacking. Your mocking of the ride is not out of place. However, at the time it was fun to experience a ride simulator that wasn't Star Wars.

Presumably, Nemoy is credited because he was working under one of the trade unions that required he be credited for the work. I think Epcot is also the park, especially then, that was the least immersive by design and where a credit plaque fits the best. Interesting that it's not at the entrance, where it might draw in some people. I wonder what other rides have credits? I know some attractions have little hidden easter eggs for the creators, which parallels where easter eggs came from, at least as I've heard it described - they were originally added to video games where the creators were not allowed to put in credits by their publisher/employer and thus had to hide their names in a way that could be found by a fan of the game but not found by anyone that wasn't looking to find it. If you can't get your name on the ride, why not leave some other signature mark?
@ads086

If "Rides That Made People Sick" becomes the series, Mission Space must surely be in there. I'm not sure why they haven't sold it off to NASA to move down to their attraction centre yet and put a Buzz Lightyear or WallE attraction in its place yet.

Correction on the boarding film: rather than a cast of aliens, we see a bunch of doctors, a couple of tourists... AND WAYNE SZALINSKI! We don't see his face, because you don't get Rick Moranis for a two-second cameo on a boarding film, but we see his shoes and that helmet he made to look for his kids with.

13:00 - I've spent most of my life fighting weight, back and forth. Seeing fat people portrayed as villains is actually a good thing, not a bad thing. It reminds you that you are the result of what you put into your body, and if you want to have a life riddled with preventable medical issues then keep being fat. Today's generation is worried about "fat shaming" or hurting people's feelings. As a result of this "body positivity" BS, we've normalized a terrible condition (obesity) that's killing people. If only we could go back to encouraging people to think better when it comes to their health. Hell yeah being fat is the enemy but it's YOUR enemy, not society's.
