There is a large electric fence running across the border with Belgium and there must be German troops all over the place, not even to mention how dangerous it must be at verdun with al the fighting and shelling going on. Drew Dixon I would recommend to visit the Austro-Hungarian forts near Trient (or Trento (don't know if you guys know the German or Italian name)) in south Tirol. There where about 8 Austro-Hungarian and a few Italian forts on the mountains and going threw the tunnels and the Forts is really interesting. Sorry my English is not the best. ;-)

Just wanted to thank you and the Verdun team for a fascinating episode, I personally visited the region in mid summer 2015 and found Douamont (on a beautiful, still summers evening, without another person there) to be very profoundly moving, the sound of just birdsong and the view over the forest that surrounds the site was such a paradox to the energy of hatred that prevailed there just over 100 years ago. Explaining to a friend about my experience, I said " it was so quiet that it was as if there was no sound left to describe the horror", which in retrospect was poetic but so so true. Thanks again

A true testament to the absolute destructive power of artillery. The designs of brilliant engineers, defenses that could have turned back entire divisions of infantry, were turned into so much lumpy earth; A mere whisper of the perfection of function it once was.

What an incredible video, very haunting in that fog and excellent camera work. Fantastic to learn more about the forts and their design. I had no idea the fort in game was modeled so faithfully! An incredible game that succeeds to balance real life history, atmosphere and fun gameplay! Perhaps we could see more videos linking content from WW1 video games to the real history? My pick would the excellent Toy Soldiers, it really captures the grim destruction of the war through the less confronting lense of virtual model dioramas.

Idea for a cool follow-up to the Verdun game: "Mutiny 1917". You can do cool things like form committees, vote to refuse to go back to the trenches, wave red flags, sing the "Internationale", take the train back into Paris, and get court-martialed and executed.

Dear Indy and crew, I have been a fan of The Great War channel on KZbin since it was only a few months old. At the time my interest and knowledge in the Great War was pretty low. Since that day you guys have inspired me to learn everything I can about it. So much so that when my girlfriend and I went to Paris for ten days I insisted we spend some time exploring the battlefields of Verdun. It was a mind blowing experience to see the earth still so incredibly churned up 100 years later. It only hints to the hell those poor soldiers had to experience. The cemetery outside of the ossuary was a sobering reminder of the lives lost there during that battle. We explored the grounds and the cold damp tunnels of Fort Douaumont and Fort de Vaux. Our trip to Verdun was incredible and eye opening. I would never have had the experience if it weren't for your channel. So thank you, from the both of us, for the hard work you guys do every week to keep history alive. Sincerely, Mike F'ing Bond

Because technology allowed for war to become mobile again and people apparently don't mind dying in droves quite as much if they are managing to take huge swaths of land in days or hours and capitulating countries in weeks that held out for years in the last one instead of being butchered for mere yards.

@jmkbartsch 7 жыл бұрын
There were up to 70.000 nuclear warheads during the height of the cold war. Nowadays estimates vary between 10 and 15 thousand of which about 4000 are deployed. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_arms_race#/media/File:US_and_USSR_nuclear_stockpiles.svg). Also it is very noteworthy, that in the last 70 years more than 2000 nukes have been detonated on this planet, most of those due to the USSR and the US. The combined explosive energy would equal about 35000 times the hiroshima nuclear bomb respectivly. (kzbin.info/www/bejne/jXLRooWHnJKKZs0) There is also the interesting hypothesis that this excessive use of nuclear arms may also have had an impact on the global climate, thought in my opinion there is not enough evidence yet to proof that claim. I just think it's an interesting sidenote.

visited Verdun in the Late 1980's when I was stationed in Germany. Was one of the highlights of my tour of duty. I hope you visited the domed section of the battlefield and the Douaumont Ossuary. The tour was just prior to being deployed to the first Gulf War and was designed to give us an "idea" of trench warfare was like. One of my most vivid memories was visiting a trench line still containing the soldiers remains and the tips of their bayonets could just still be seen poking out of the ground. they were buried alive by German artillery. We had a French Lieutenant as our guide and when we asked him how the French or any army was able to get them "over the top" knowing what faced them he could not answer my question.

@@leod-sigefast Not everyone was stuck with a bolt-action, which you’re more than welcome to use anyways, it’s still a viable option as it normally two shots and out ranges smgs.

The Wonder Woman movie takes place during The War To End All Wars or The Great War or even World War 1. So I was wondering could you guys do a special analyzing the trailers. To see if its historically accurate.

If its ok to ask, were shotguns (or trench guns as soldiers in ww1 called it) used by the other allies or central powers? I understand the German soldiers as well as German command complained about the US soldiers using them (calling them inhumane). But I am unsure if other nations used them or how common were they.
@bishop9757
@bishop9757 7 жыл бұрын
None of the others officially used them on the front. Trench gun is a term used for a modified winchester design. British military looked at using sawnoff shotguns but scrapped it due to the low rate offire and lack of range (ment man had to carry multiple weapons) There is a French booklet on trench assaults that suggests using shotguns but not found anything on them using any.

Pipsy Verdun was way longer it lasted 9 months, 3 weeks and 6 days, while Stalingrad lasted 5 months, 1 week and 3 days. However Stalingrad still remains the bloodiest battle in history.
