Beautiful...the Japanese version of a picture dictionary...encyclopedic, artistic, realistic...trying to capture everything witnessed in time. Yet, this is almost created in the fear or understanding that this experiential knowledge may be lost or not appreciated as time wears on, as the Hokusai watches the world change before his eyes...not just for nostalgia (he lived to old age), but that people will continue to understand the world in which he and they live.
