Exploring Indonesia's OLDEST City 🇮🇩

Today I am taking a stroll through one of the oldest, if not the OLDEST, cities in all of Indonesia. I'm going to check out the oldest market in Palembang, the capital of South Sumatra. It was quite a sight to see. Just like any market, there were tons of people selling all types of things. One thing is for sure, they don't get many tourists down in this area, I was getting lots of looks.

Everytime you say "yah" it makes you sound more like Indonesian, "nanti yah", "duku yah", "orange yah" Good Job Nick! 👍😃 More vocabularies on this videos: "Luas" means wide "Bau" means stink "Jinten" or "Jintan" means cumin "Cemilan" means snack Funny thing is when they translate "Kayu manis" into "Sweet Wood" literally, 😂, actually "Kayu Manis" is Cinnamon in English . and a lady said "Podo Wae", it's Javanese, means "Sama Saja" in Indonesian or "The same" in English. One of the guy said in the store said, "Pestisida" means Pesticide and some other guy also told you they sell fertilizer. Fertilizer is "Pupuk" in Indonesian. "Gabah" means unhusked rice You could say "pergi ke mana", when you asked about the boat.😃 No, he thought what you meant is "berapa jam", but actually I know you really meant "jam berapa", so his answer was wrong. He should say "jam 12" instead of "12 jam". Haha.. "Gudang" means warehouse. Watching you so close with all the local porters, even you gave them a fist bump, well I'm seeing a humble man right know! What a nice video to watch Nick. Hats off to you, Sir 👍

3:46 Palembang people have less exposure to foreigners, unlike other places in West Sumatera (Padang and Bukittinggi) and North Sumatera (Medan, Lake Toba, and Bukit Lawang). So Nick, you'll find a more original feeling of the warmer and purer welcome of the local. 19:32 Those are brown sugars, Palembang version. They call it "gulo abang" which means "red sugar" as they see it more as red than brown. 20:48 No, you should not. 21:55 She said it is store rooms upstairs. 24:13 He really said that the trip takes 12 hours. It is common in Sumatera for that long trip, either via land road or via sea/river way. Sumatera Island is 2/3 the size of Texas.

Hey Nick, I'm from Mexico. Grew up in the US. I'm curious to know what attracted you to Indonesia? Most "Bules" get drawn into Thailand, Vietnam, or even China and Japan. Often because of a girl. Indonesia beyond Bali seems to be the unexplored frontier of young westerners. You went for Indonesia. What was it about it?

Pempek Nick....that's what we all come to Palembang for,. Btw....the "fish jerky" was supposed to be fried first Nick....it's sort of fish chips. Looooooove all of your videos. They are superb because they are representations of all the values and beliefs you seem to be embracing. Such as humanity, equality, and respect. By the way, I do not realize Palembang was so run down like that. It is a pity.

I think you get a lot of "pranks" at this traditional market, starting from buying tempeh and even giving fried sweet potatoes, tasting raw prawn crackers and getting more attention asking how you are and saying hello. The shops in the market, on the 2nd floor, are not residential houses like the one in Semende, but a warehouse (gudang) for storing goods.

Hei nick, ive been watching all your video before (palembang and semende videos). i dont expect that u will come to my hometown palembang, specially semende. I apologize if during the trip around Palembang and Semende you get unfavorable treatment from local residents (just a few people), they are just too excited to see foreigners and are not out of control (they dont know to treat), but Nick, remember only one things, the good things you find and get while there from Mr.Abel and his family. in this case, we also have to prepare for the development of tourism management and equip the community when they have to deal with foreign tourists in the future. I will help convey this to the local government to get bright tourism management in Palembang. thank you for the video! we really enjoy it!

Watching you eat an uncooked fish cracker in your video right now commenting that it is like jerky. I think the people were having a laugh at your expense. It's meant to be fried. I love how you bring parts of Indonesia to people that are seldom seen. Hoping you get to Medan soon. If Medan is in your plans send me a DM.
