Have you heard the story of John Carew, or 'One-handed' Carew?
In our video today we explore the beautiful harbour of Mevagissey, a delight at any time of year. With its narrow streets, higgledy piggledy cottages and harbour frontage, protected by long harbour walls, it has attracted many visitors to enjoy a wander over the years.
After an exploration, we followed a 4.5 mile self-guided walk taking us into farmland and the neighbouring village of Portmellon. On our route we pass the reputedly haunted Penwarne Manor, once owned by the Carew family. We found a fascinating story of how John Carew lost his right arm in battle and developed one of the first wooden, prosthetic arms. From here we rejoin the coast path at the beautiful, Colona Beach at Chapel Point before returning to Mevagissey, via Portmellon.
This video was filmed during October 2020.
The standard description bit…
We are Sarah and Andrew and we film our walks around Cornwall and publish on KZbin, usually weekly. Occasionally we stay in accommodation in Cornwall and upload our vlog. Sarah is fascinated by sea glass and likes to collect it so there may be the occasional sea glass video too! The channel is a hobby and we both have normal day jobs.
Frequently asked questions:
What camera do we use?
Since December 2018 we have used: Canon Powershot G7x MkII
How do I find the books you use?
Most are still in print although some we pick up in charity shops and may be available on Amazon secondhand. Please refer to the video for the titles. Every video shows the book three times. Sorry but we can’t put a link in every description.
Best time of year to visit Cornwall?
We love May, June for flora and fauna, July and September for spectacular scenery.

Another lovely video which really brightened a dull and dreary December day. Bodrugan Barton was home to Sir Henry Bodrugan who fought for Richard III against Henry Tudor. After Henry became king, Bodrugan was charged with treason and when his enemies came to arrest him he fled the mile or so to the coast where he evaded his pursuers by leaping off the cliff to a waiting boat, which took him to safety in France. The cliff became known as Bodrugan's Leap and can be found just along the coast from Colona Beach.

My mum was born and bred In Mevagissey although I was brought up in Plymouth, I spent a lot of every summer holiday there. The house you were standing outside saying it looked like it was built into the rock was my Auntie Minnie and Uncle Jack’s when I was a small girl. She used to moan that picture calendars always seemed to include pictures of The Cliff and it was often taken when she had her washing out for the world to see. Wonderful memories, thank you 😊

You two are like Laurel and Hardy sometimes! A good giggle was just what I needed and I will spare you any more Hand Jokes as I can see that others have contributed theirs!! I love a Ghost Story, and Hugh Bodrugan was a character in Poldark of course...the lecherous Lord of the Manor who was always chasing after Demelza! Having gone from Tier 1 to Tier 3 here in Kent, I needed cheering up and this was just the ticket today. How Kent managed to jump into the fire when we have just had a Lockdown, beats me. Make the most of being in Tier 1 you two, and keep putting up your lighthearted history walks. They are a ray of sunshine in troubled times. J xx

Nice to see you both again in a familiar place !! Again more memories!! Been to that pub in Portmellon😁 and it was a scorching hot day you never forget these places and drove that road into Mevagissey but got stuck in a jam in Mevagissey no one was going anywhere. I'm sure you know how tight Mevagissey is. After that I always parked in the car park!! Had a meal at the pub in the Harbour at Mevagissey evening time and the lights across the harbour are so pretty. It seems a lifetime ago with this year as it's been but lots of memories everywhere for me in Cornwall. Lovely you chose from Portmellon to walk. I agree with Andrew totally on which house he preferred more in keeping with the area. I'd like a tiny traditional cottage with a dog. Happiness!! Thanks for sharing 🥰

This was indeed an ‘andsome’ video, full of entertainment & fun with your handful of jokes. Loved the beach and that gentle lapping of the waves, the beach did remind me of Talland Bay (I remember the steep climb well). It took a brave seagull to walk across the concrete path & I wonder if he survived to fly another day? Looking at the clip on Portmellon, I wonder if the slip was used for a lifeboat in years gone bye. The video was just the tonic we all need in these worrying times. Thank you.

I think I detected a more rhotic Cornish accent in your cute role playing there. I read that the English colonists here in America most likely spoke with a rhotic West Country accent because although the non-rhotic way of speaking existed in Britain, it was not widespread yet. Anyway, really enjoyed all the interesting bits of history you shared here, not to mention how beautiful Mevagissey is. Did you say your grandfather wrote that book?
