This series is for beginners specifically, and this is the third episode in the Beginner's Mind series. Watch Episode 0 first, as it explains the fundamentals of modular synthesis.
Patch Notes/Modules Used:
Modules Used:
4ms Stereo Triggered Sampler (plays samples that can be modulated with CV)
Make Noise Echophon (delay)
Make Noise Pressure Points (sends CV to control pitch of Sampler)
Make Noise Brains (an add-on to Pressure Points that can advance it automatically)
ALM Pamela’s Workout (sends triggers to Brains as a clock)
XAOS Batumi (4 LFO’s used for modulation and for clocking Pressure Points)
Mutable Instruments Clouds (granular synthesizer for effects)
Intellijel Dixie ii+ (used here as a LFO to modulate the Batumi)
Intellijel Azimuth II (not used… but the output is being routed through it to the monitors)
For those interested, I also have an experimental album made entirely of live, improvised modular performances made with my set-up available here. Many thanks to those of you who have bought it!

Thank you so much for making this series, it is so much easier to understand than most "beginner" resources I have tried up to this point!

Hey, thanks so much for leaving the comment, man. I wish I could do more of these videos but my work schedule has been intense recently. I have another vid in the works that I hope to release soon too. Happy synthing!

At 1:45 he says, "It doesn't really sound like anything." Well, my dog thought it sounded like someone knocking on our door and lost her poor little dog mind. So, congrats for that. LOL

Thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge, this really is helpful to me. Could you maybe (as a polite suggestion with no offense meant) in the description note the modules you are using alongside patch notes? Thanks again!

Yes of course! I'll edit it and add the modules. Thanks for the very kind comment.

Thank you so much for these videos, as a beginner getting into Modular Synths with VCV Rack these are a blessing. Any good reads you might recommend on the subject?

Thanks for the comment! In terms of books, maybe the best I've come across is "Patch & Tweak." I would've benefited from it a lot if I got it earlier in my own modular journey, but when I got it, I already knew much of the stuff there. I haven't read through it fully yet though. Personally, I've found videos much more helpful than books. And I've found experimentation the best teacher of all.

Sorry if this is a silly question....can you plug the wrong thing into the wrong hole and fry your rig? Is that a thing?
@ModularLanding
@ModularLanding 5 жыл бұрын
That is pretty unlikely. You can experiment pretty much any way you want, and it's unlikely to cause any problems, especially if you plug outputs into inputs. Maybe if you had a loose cable and the other end hit the power rail or something that could be bad for your rig. Also connecting modules to the power strip incorrectly (like backwards) can in some cases fry a module if the manufacturer didn't guard against that. But nothing like this has ever happened to me and I haven't been all that careful about what I patch.

Hello and thanks for the video. I recently added a batumi lfo module to my rack and can’t get it to work. I would think it would be as simple as plugging one of the wave form outputs into let’s say a cv input for cut off on my filter and would be able to hear the sweeping sound. I do that and get no difference in sound. Was there anything you had to do to batumi to get it to work? I am using in free mode and should be as simple as you used it in this video. Thanks in advance.

It should be as simple as that, yes. I'm not sure what's wrong. A few ideas: if the slider is all the way down, the LFO will be super slow and you may not hear it. (I'm sure you knew that, but just in case). Second, try putting one of the sliders all the way up and then patch one of the outputs of the Batumi to your output module (i.e. out to your monitors). The Batumi goes up to audible rates, so you should hear it like an audio-range VCO. If you do not hear anything, then something is wrong with your Batumi. Make sure you connected the power correctly and not backwards (usually there's a red strip on one side of the power strip to tell you which way to connect it).

Thank you it’s working finally. It appears there was a loose connection on back. I was able push the entire circuit panel in snug as well as connection on back panel. Tested with slider all way up straight into an output to mixer and heard sound.

Awesome! Be sure to watch some of the videos on the Batumi to get it's full functionality. It can do a lot. Self-patching it is also lots of fun. I did one video in the series exploring that a bit.

I love the video. But the audio quality is very poor. Volume is very uneven, and I need to adjust volume every 5 seconds, plus can't hear your voice over the music.

Sorry about that! I’m not always sure how to get the balance of voice and music right.
