I would just seal it if I could, but the woods used are paint grade and aren't all the same. It would look blotchy if we seal it. When we were designing it, the intent was to paint it, so he used a mix of woods. He could explain it better. LOL! Anyway, I needs to be painted. Maybe that should be the first chore I tackle. 😬

@@SewtheDistance pick the curtain fabric first and pull a nice color from there. White is always good in a craft room which inherently has lots of colors competing.

Be happy to give you my two cents😊… I would start by figuring out what you want to keep in this room and sectioning it out. An area for cricut, an area for filming stuff, another for fabric storing, etc. I’d move the cabinet with the doors closer to the window where you have the cabinet with your projects to avoid fading. Get a couple of cabinets/bookcases to replace the white and brown and store your fabrics in one and your UFOs in the other. I would put these two where the cabinet with doors is now. The antique piece with your old quilts has character… patch the holes and paint it white and use it to store your old quilts and you jars of antique buttons…. I like the yellow cabinet maybe use it to store printer, extra paper cricut below books, magazines… etc. open up the area by your desk so you can put a chair there by the window. Hope this helps you😊

You need one whole wall of bookcases on top and maybe closed cabinet doors on bottom to store a lot of things and then maybe you could get rid of some of your smaller cabinets and tables and give you more space to move around the room and be more flexible on where things are in your room with less furniture pieces

This is actually very encouraging, because when I watch people's videos I always assume that they have a perfectly organized sewing room. It was fun to see a behind-the-scenes tour of your sewing room and to know that we all have the same problems with organizing all of our sewing stuff. As for redecorating, I have found that uniform standard shelving that all matches helps to eliminate a cluttered look. For example, maybe one entire wall of white built in shelving. But keep one or two of your eclectic pieces, because they give the room character, and paint them a different color Also, I truly appreciate your upbeat and positive attitude. It is very endearing. Keep up the great work.

It's a beautiful space. Personally, I love my blue walls with white furniture. If it was my space, I'd start with the lighting and paint. You have to choose a color that you're going to love to be with. Once everything is cleared out and you have fresh paint, and the flooring you want. Then start putting things in. I moved things around 4 or 5 times. Organizing what goes into the room, becomes easier when it's done slowly with deliberate thought of the use, and where the items are going to be convenient. Don't things get out of control. Have a monthly straighten up the stash and scraps morning.

First of all go thru an get rid of everything that you don't use or need. Put cricket machine on top of cabinet where you have all if its equipment. Start by maybe inviting some other utubers who you know to come visit and help with suggests. I can think of one person to invite is Becca. She has a large sewing room. Definitely one wall of shelves. Too many pieces of odd pieces of furniture. What about putting the antique quilts stacked on bed in a spare bedroom. A closet where you can hang quilt tops and quilts to keep clean and out of sun. It is a wonderful room. Even with the shelving have a shelf or 2 where you can get all sewing machines and serger off the floor. Hope these ideas will help and not frustrate you. Just take you time and don't rush.

I don't have curtains in any of the rooms of my house. I only have the same type of blinds that you have. They look fine to me and no one who has visited my home, family or friend, has had anything negative to say about them. In fact, several have had positive things to say about the simplicity of having no curtains in my house. Have you watched any before and after videos of other sewing rooms on KZbin? There are many people who have had the same issues you are having. Watching them might help you get ideas for how to start changing things in your room. One person I recently watched was "The Yorkshire Sew Girl", who moved her sewing room to another room in her house. She shows how she drew a map of her room and used it to arrange her furniture. One last thing: the only person who can make decisions about colors and types of furniture is you. There are lots of people in the world who will have negative things to say about the choices we make, but they don't live in our homes. So, make a list of colors you think you would like to have on your walls. Go get samples of those colors from your local hardware or paint store, and try them out on your wall by painting a rectangle or square on one wall and see which color pleases you more. Over the 75 years that I have lived, I have found that I become indecisive when I am concerned about what other people will say about my choices. It took me awhile, but I finally decided not to care about their opinions. I decided that what I do in my home has to please me, above all else. That decision made a huge difference in my life! Hope this helps.

Great space to sew and be creative in. If you can afford “canned” lights I would put many on your ceiling. I set up my sewing space like a store so that I can find everything and it makes sense to me. I use pretty boxes and label them. You have a large range of different furniture and you could get a uniform look by painting it all the same color. You are lucky your husband can build things for you. Could he make some closets with shelving?

Here I go. This is what I would do. You definetely need a theme and a start with a blank palet, white walls. My white paint in my sewing room has a fun name, bakery box white, isn't that fun? Definatley go with white. You have so many different dressers in the room. You might want to pair a few down and get them out so you have more space, OR, if you're going to keep the furniture, paint it all the ame color to unify it. I would paint all the wood furniture the same yellow color or white, it would unify the furniture so it's not so jumbled looking plus yellow is such a happy color. Sort through your supplies and quilts. You may display or use some of the quilts in other rooms of your home. From the pictures you posted it looks like there is way too much stuff in your room, pare down. Definatley move the family printer out. The window blinds are perfect, just add valances, of course have some yellow in it to match your furniture and make some throw pillows from the same fabric that match the valances and blend nicely with your easy chair. I hope you wont' be offended by my comments, you did ask. BTW a good white woudl be to match the white blind color. I would die for a room that size, my house is old and small and my sewing room is tiny. Right nwo I'm trying to work out a solution for an ironing station next to my sewing machine. Di

Oh Kris. Just love your room…it’s size! Wow! You’re like me, I have a lot of old cupboards that we bought at 2nd hand shops years ago. Waste not want not mentality. But nothing gels. If I had your room and money too, I’d invest in wall to ceiling cupboards, all Along one wall. One cupboard for storage of rarely used larger items like serger, travel machine, vacuum etc. A whole weekend sorting scraps etc. Painting walls a light colour that you like and better down lights. Do we really need everything we accumulate? I’ve got a tiny mish mash area and often think it should catch on fire soI could start again! Jok😩😩I love your cutting table…what a bonus. ❤️🙏🇦🇺

Hi Kris, I have just some basic suggestions. I would decide on which furniture you want to keep and then paint them all the same color. It will help eliminate a choatic look to your space. As far a color for your walls, I would pick a color that you love. I love white and duck egg blue, but color is a personal thing. I would also make areas for each thing that you’ll be doing, i.e. paper crafting, cricut, hand stitching etc. as for lighting, I have can lights and a chandelier in my quilting studio and love them all! I could probably brings planes in from the local airport. I have so much light and love it. Our son put the can lights on separate switches, so I can light up whatever section I want or all of them. You have lots of room, so have fun! Can’t wait to see your room finished!

Thank you so much! I made this video almost a year ago and having done much since. How fast time goes by! This is the year, however. I am going to redo this room. Thank you for all the suggestions! We have plans to put in canned lighting--we even marked the ceiling and mapped it out (so I guess we have done something! LOL!). I have a feeling we will also be able to bring in planes. 🤣 We also added lighting tracks and an overhead camera mounting system for recording. I would LOVE a chandelier or to paint the walls blue. Unfortunately, neither work well with making videos. I will most likely go with a white or grey for the walls (boring, I know) since it will work best with my content-creating job. 🥰 I love these ideas! Thank you so much for watching and commenting! This is the year it will get finished! I hope! LOL!

You have to decide What is the function of this room? What is the Most important task, then the next one, etc. start laying each task out based on priority and space needs. Draw it out before moving anything. Change those ceiling lights! Use a combination of flush Mount lights, some long handing focused chandeliers like you’d use over a kitchen counter, then finally lamps (floor and table) all over. Get non craft stuff out. Take each machine and make sure it’s set up so you can use it right away, all plugged in and tools nearby. The only space that makes complete sense is the office/Bible study corner. Good luck and think aesthetics, make it 1) FUNCTIONAL then 2) PRETTY/CHARMING/pleasing to your eye. Re curtains. Pick a favorite fabric and build the room’s color scheme around those colors. Don’t get too crazy. You’ll have lots of fabrics showing so the look can be too chaotic if you’re not careful.

I would love to come organize your space! I love tidying lol personally I would get rid of some of the cabinets, shelves etc... too many different styles. Decide if you want your things on show or behind closed doors. One whole wall could be cupboards with shelves inside. Push them together to make use of space. I'm seeing waste space in between the cupboards etc. I love my pale lemon walls, bright but not too bright. White furniture. Have your ironing area to the side of your sewing area for easy access. Put the chair/small couch in and work around that. Sit and go thru your scraps and other stuff. Donate half of it to a shelter to teach sewing. Be brutal cos it's so tempting to hoard lol net curtains on the windows are pretty and give privacy while letting in light. Nicer than blinds. Remember Less is More. ❤

First, on paper decide what zones you need. A zone for filming and editing, storing video equipment & quilt display. A zone to do the daily devotions, create, think, be with your dog, watch videos, the franken cabinet for the pretty stuff, the antique needle holder case, bookshelves for quilting books, patterns, & open fabric storage for inspiration. A zone for the actual workspace, cutting, sewing, ironing, tools needed, design wall & Accuquilt dies. A business zone, for administrative tasks, printing, storing office supplies. A zone less used items for future projects, storage such as batting, little used items (Cricut cutter/supplies), travel sewing machines, sergers, UFOs, etc. Your workspace zone should only contain current projects for sewing. I recommend no more than 2-3 ongoing projects and FINISH these and don't turn into UFOs. If you have to put the project into hiatus, store it out of your work zone, in the storage zone. Your workspace should only be for works in progress and not become cluttered. It's for work and be focused on that. Think of a factory: one space for research & development, design, testing, one space for administrative/management, one space for inventory/storage, and a manufacturing space. One can be more efficient that way, and clutter doesn't build up. For example, the storage space could get cluttered but doesn't affect the other spaces. It's easier to keep a small area (zone) organized that a whole open space. It's easier to clutter up an open space than zoned areas and clean up after use should be simple. Every zone should the tools needed (buy duplicate tools that are used in each zone) plus a waste basket for each zone. No walking around to get tools (breaks up workflow) and putting in a central wastebasket. I recommend reducing the furniture, takes up space and not efficient, for an IKEA type storage system. They will help you for free to design such a storage space, and print out a materials sheet, and have it picked from the warehouse, and for you to pick up. I did my kitchen this way and it was hassle free. If no IKEA nearby, go to one or do it online and you can have it all delivered. The can lighting system is the best, now with LED bulbs that last forever. The cans are sold for a low price at Costco. Solar blinds are great. I had a room that got too hot when the sun streamed in, got the solar blinds (come in colors to match the room) and the room was sunny but cool, thanks to those blinds. Thread should not be stored on the wall but in drawers/storage boxes. Choose the threads needed and put to your workspace project box. The beautiful thread holder hubby made should be in your video or creative zone. Reducing visual clutter while sewing in the workspace will keep your mind focused on the project, and not have distractions. "Do I need to post my video?" "Do I need more white thread ordered?" "I haven't looked at the new quilting book." Speaking of books and magazines: Kindle Unlimited is a great resource for $14.99/month. You can use Kindle apps on your desktop, laptop, tablet, and phone, for current quilting magazines on any subject (including overseas ones), books (quilting) or on any subject. If you see something you want to keep, do screenshots of the quilt idea/pattern/info. Then you can have it in digital storage and print when needed. This really reduces book/magazine clutter, especially if you only like one project in the whole thing. You can do the same for patterns, take pictures and store digitally or buy PDF patterns. Really reduces the clutter. I hope this helps.

No way would I paint the cutting table. That wood is too beautiful to cover up. My best advice is to contact fellow you-tubers Dawn "The Minimal Mom" and Cas from "Clutterbug." They could straighten out your room and they do help others. I'm sure they would enjoy a video collaboration. Cas has a little test you can take to see what kind of 'clutterbug' you are. I''m a Butterfly. I need open bins, hooks, and shelves. Plus I'm ADHD so I'm not going to fuss with lids. I love my pegboard too. For paint, check your closet. What color clothing do you usually buy? There's a color you like so now just adjust the intensity of it until you want it on a wall.

Unfortunately, I have to paint the table, but I completely understand what you are saying. The materials he used are meant for paint. We intended to paint it when we designed and built it, so it is a mix of different woods/finished plywood/etc. Had I known how well it was going to turn out and how much I'd like it, I would have had him use the same material for everything. ❤️ LOVE The Minimal Mom and Clutterbug. I watch them both. The thing is that I am am very organized everywhere else BUT my sewing room. LOL! I am also a butterfly, btw AND I have ADHD! We are in good company! 😍 As for the paint color, I really have to get something that is reflective because of recording. If I didn't have a channel, I would use orange. That is my favorite color!

Go vertical with storage units. You are loosing valuable space not utilizing the room height. Use modular shelf, shelf drawer units (bought, thrifted or dyi) instead of attaching shelves to walls. Never know when the urge (or needl) to rearrange will happen. Highest areas can hold batting, quilts you are waiting to work on, etc (label, label, label) and less frequently needed things. I'm height challenged too but a folding step ladder does it when I need to access the upper stratosphere. Put wheels (front seats locking) or sliders on EVERYTHING so they are (eventually) movable. Use the exposed sides of cabinets for hanging miscellaneous (small pegboard or heavy duty damage free stick on hooks) Make everything as independent and rearrangable as possible at the get go. Good bones then you can flesh out the little things as you live with it. I've got a 25x60 ft quilting area upstairs in our shop and still have to be creative on where to put what lol Don't stress out, life is a work in progress...💗

I need a room that’s cheery and not too cluttered. So I went with a lighter aqua color on my walls, we have white trim and baseboards. I have white plantation shutters on the windows so I don’t need curtains which are dust catchers. I had a cabinet company put together white shaker type cabinets. I like my stuff behind doors. There are different sized drawers to fit all sizes of things. In the closet, my husband built me shelves to store books, magazine holders, quilt project boxes, etc. Maybe your husband could even put cabinets together for you. He seems very talented in that area. A lot of people are using IKEA pieces which is a good option. Good luck with your room. 😊

Pull everything out, paint, clean, etc. Check out Jean Jean Truelove Quilts for You on KZbin. Her husband puts some sort of sun glare product on her windows to eliminate the fabric fading issues. Ditch all the mismatched cupboards, even the ones your awesomely talented husband made and design a cohesive shelving system with open shelves, as well as with doors. Repurpose his furniture elsewhere in the house. Get some graph paper and play with designs, include plugs and existing lighting in your drawings. Scraps. That's an issue for all of us. How much do you actually scrap quilt? The answer to that question will drive the action you take, that is, keep and create a scrap mgt system, or sell/give them away. Put the accuquilt and cricut in a workspace of their own. Your editing station needs a home of it's own, and only your clerical items belong there. I like the buttons, but I see chachkis in the sewing room as dust collectors. Put them behind a glass door if you want to keep them in a decorative style. All fabric is wrapped on comic boards or bolts. Antique quilts are nice, and your videos on them are informative, but be careful not to let them bog you down. Clutter can suck the mojo right out of us. Your cutting table is awesome. Incorporate it, your machines, and your ironing board (replace with a big board) into a functional space for sewing. Now that I've shared my thoughts, inthink I'll go clean my own disaster of a sewing room ; ) Looking forward to your video updates as you tackle this!

I just came across this video. Between the windows (right of the door) - put Frankenfurniture there. Portions of it sticks out too far for where it's sitting right now, smack dab in the middle of your most used pathway, meaning it's taking up too much room (and, if you're like me, giving you bruises when you get too close to the corner of it). Wall opposite the door - put long shelves on the wall to unify the space and remove the non-matching furniture units being used. Make the bottom shelf stick out further from the wall, and use drawer units for it to sit on, to double as desk space for your Cricut or other projects. You'll have space underneath, between the drawer units for storage (like the overflowing cart, boxes, fabric bolts, travel units, recording equipment, and your aunt's wooden box) which could be covered by fabric curtains. Currently you have a ton of unused space between the furniture units that you should be utilizing to make organizing easier. Corner by the window where you want to put a chair - perfect place to put a furniture unit that doesn't stick out so far from the wall, and you'd have room to put a comfy chair in front of the corner. You could even create an roll frame holder to hold rolls of fabric or batting. The corner between your sewing machines has that bookcase but that isn't utilizing the space properly. Personally I prefer not having my sewing machine table against the wall so I have more room for drape, keeps the fabric from skewing left or right during sewing. You could butt up two sewing tables together between the windows. It would jut out into the room but open up the space against long wall opposite doorway giving you more organizing options, such as a place to store upright rolls of batting, and you'd still have room to walk between the island and the sewing tables. Since you're a busy person, use baskets or bins to hold fabric scraps and put them on the shelves - that way it could be used as decoration. Your yardage could go into the armoire. Curtains - unsure if you want to completely block the outside if you're sewing at night but for day use you could use shears made of fabric with UV protection. Otherwise, please cover your thread. UV shortens the lifespan of thread and any dust you get on the spools will be transferred directly into your sewing machine which can cause gunky problems.

My sewing room is a room with an adjoining loft and I LOVE my loft!!!! I don't like confined spaces and the loft has lots of light and is open so I spend most of my time there. I added built in cabinets, and shelves (just finished) and mostly use the room for storage, and the loft to work in. I would love a cutting table to go in the middle like yours though! Now I'm getting ready to put in some shelves for sewing related collectables and some spool racks. To make my organization disaster worse i just bought a HUGE Janome sewing machine and I have to move things around to fit it in. I think it's a process and I'm not sure if it ever ends.....

My 2 cents: I would start by decluttering using the Dana K White, she's on KZbin, system. 1st step is trash but it looks like you don't have a trash problem. I'd get real & get rid of everything you are not going to use and donate it. Then you have some space to work with what you have. Clutterbug on KZbin is good for figuring your organization style that works for you. I got control of my sewing space this way. As for paint, I'd paint 3 of the walls white & have an accent color wall. Maybe paint some of the furniture your accent color & put it against a white wall. I'm not big on decorating though. Your island is fabulous! Then think of Karen Brown's ideas for organizing a sewing space. Set up stations for what you do and keep the stuff that is for that activity there. If you run out of space, that is the limit & you can only choose what is essential to go there. DKW's container concept is vital to keeping your space functional & staying below your clutter threshold. I might move your desk and devotional space to somewhere else in the house if you can or if you need more sewing/videoing space. It's a great room and I'm sure you'll love it even more when it's settled and it doesn't keep screaming at you to make it right. It helps make more room in your space and brain for creativity. Check out Dawn the minimal mom's videos on the silent to do list. It's a game changer and you don't have to be a "minimalist " to benefit from it. Have fun and take your time. It's layers of work but you'll get there. ❤️ Ps don't choose open shelving or closed cabinets until you've discovered your Clutterbug organization style that suits you. It can also be a different style in different spaces or categories of things.

Kris, you're asking me!!!! My sewing room is in one big mess. I have a serious storage problem. When you solve your problem come on over and help me! I'm at a loss as to know what you can do. My room itself is lovely and my new Ikea sewing desk is wonderful. I have white walls with black and pink covers for my sewing machine and overlocker. Black Ikea trolley and would you believe black carpet. Yes, I know, but it's a bedroom really. White furniture and black and pink bunting hanging across my window. Looks bright and cheery (except for all the things that are sitting on the floor waiting for a place to live). Can't wait to know what you come up with.

I’m right in the middle of setting up a new sewing space. I’m going from a cozy walk in closet to a 14’ x 12’ room. It’s not been easy mostly because I am trying hard to spend as little money as possible. So with your space I’ve noticed a couple of things. You don’t have any closet in the room…neither do I. But there are thing that I use in my room that really should go into a closet…so I have purchased a cabinet where one side is shelving and the other side has nothing. This is where I store things like my swifter, broom, Dustbuster and the like. On the other side, I store my travel sewing machine, extra irons, back stock of spray baste, starch, an laundry detergent/ softener because my stackable washer/dryer is also in one corner of this room. Because there is no door on your sewing room, I would repaint your gorgeous “frankenshelf” and put it on the far wall directly across the entry from the kitchen. In my opinion it is a stunning piece! Then I would put shelving and cube storage to the right and left of that cabinet. I would absolutely NOT paint your cutting table…it is stunning as is. I would just seal the wood with something protective. For your walls…the skies the limit! I personally would choose whatever your favorite color is, and choose a very light version of it and then paint what I suggested as the shelving wall a couple of shades darker as an accent wall. So your window wall and entry walls would be light and bright. For curtains I like you have mini blinds, and every so often I change the window valance up. I piece them, right now the rod is wearing a row of 10” wonky log cabins attached with loops! Most importantly, I would go through your stash. Organize it…because doing so will give you a closer idea to what you actually need for storage. Somehow, I’d like to see less shelving and maybe a space with a rocker it recliner where you can sit from time to time to hand sew, read, etc. Hope I’ve given you some food for thought!
@SewtheDistance
@SewtheDistance Жыл бұрын
You have! Thank you! Love the idea of valances and changing them out. I also love the idea of painting the frankenfurniture and making it a focal point. A closet is a must, but I am not sure where to add it. This room was intended to be the family room of the house, so it is set up that way with two windows at either end. Hmmm. Not sure where to add a closet, but I love your idea of a cabinet acting as a closet. I wasn't clear in the video--there is an entry door that goes between the kitchen and the sewing room, so that is good. I can close the door. As for painting the cutting table--I really don't have a choice on this one. When my husband and I designed it, I wanted to paint it, or at least that was my vision then. Because of this, he used wood intended to be painted and also mixed the types of wood. If I stain it or even seal it, it would be different shade and colors. 🤷🏻‍♀️ If only I had known--lol! I wasn't thinking I wanted something I could stain or seal. Oh well. Lesson learned! Thank you so much for your feedback! It is beyond helpful! ❤️ Good luck with your own space, too!

Hi Kris thanks for sharing this video. When I also reached a point where I did not know what to do I decided to draw out my room to scale as well as the pieces of furniture I had. I created a list of each category ie, embroidery supplies, notions, scrap fabric, rulers, threads, etc. then decided which pieces of furniture would be best to place that category on. This made a huge difference on seeing a visual of my room on paper to scale know that each time I rearranged it on the paper it would fit. (Also saved my husbands back from moving all the time). Doing this has made a huge difference because after I start working in my room and still feel a need to tweek it I have my Drawing and Furniture pieces to rearrance on the paper. Hope this helps. Love all that you share CJ

Di from sister chicks has tutorials for fabric baskets and they are awesome Kris!! they really get rid of a lot of small clutter! As far as painting goes….. keep it light maybe neutral. If it was my room I would decide are you one to have things behind doors or do you like to see everything? If I don’t see it then I don’t use it. Then I would decide what is my budget? Then change your lights because you’ll see things differently:) pick a paint color you really like then if you want you can paint one wall a bright color that you really like, like a statement wall:) then figure out what furniture you want to keep and then you’ll know what you need to replace it. Your amazingly talented hubby can make a wall unit that can house all of your beautiful fabrics away from the windows and then you can set up a really nice sitting area by the window for you and a friend and your dog:) if you set your room up in to work spaces like your sewing area and then for your die cutting machine. This way you now have zones to help you know what and where everything is:) I love watching other videos to see what others are doing but they sometimes go from drawer to drawer and it’s just to much for me but I like to get ideas:) You have a really nice space and I’m sure you’ll figure out what’s best for you and most of all you are blessed to have a very talented hubby:) tfs and I can’t wait to see your sewing room:) God Bless:)

You have said you have heating units on walls. That sort of precludes built in cupboards on the bottom half. However, wide shelves that would replace most of the excess furniture along the one long wall that does not appear to have windows. Then organize into areas, equipment like irons, crucut, extra sewing machines. ect; then fabric. For quilts that you worry about fading, why not have pillowcase sleeves for the individual quilts or even just not clear plastic storage bags. You could then put the antique quilts higher and the ones that are quilted in the middle and flimsies or other unfinished projects in the project boxes or bags. If the quilts were stored in the middle of the long shelving, they would be more out of the sun and having them in storage bags woukd look neater from kitchen. If you still like the beautiful bureau and the hutch, use them to store tools like rulers, tunes of things like iron on stabilizer, misc trims etc. Your scraps could also be organized by color in gallon plastic bags. That works well for me. Only decorative items like the buttons jars should grace perhaps the top of your bureau. These two furniture items could be on shorter wall near sewing machines. If you video near the sewing machines, then set that up so it is easy to video there and leave it set so it is convenient. I feel your sewing tables should be near the windows where they are now. Have a sewing cart between them for convenience. All the books and patterns should be neatly organized on the shelves. Make your office area near the window on other end and perhaps a cart for office supplies next to it. Your ironing board could be set up as needed but if you can arrange fir iron on cutting table with a wool mat. That works fir me most of time and ironing board stays folded unless really needed. Design wall can still slide behind the furniture. I have a space less than half your space and it is shared with dog crates under my table. The table is on he'd risers to get the height. My cutting mat goes on crates when I am sandwiching a quilt. My home office is there also in one corner. I do have a closet where all my tools, batting books and magazines are stored. I have no one to help me with shelving so I resorted to plastic drawer units and one bureau. I am religious about processing fabric as I finish a quilt and I tidy every day at end of sewing. It is the only way I can enjoy sewing as I hate clutter. I hope I have offered something worthwhile.

Since your husband a great carpenter after you paint start with some wall shelving to bring the most used things together. The fewer steps you take in the sewing, pressing, cutting the better... you have some great pieces of furniture but they are all spaced out all around the room...try to bring them a little more together as in grouping. I have tried doing a sketch of my rooms and little pieces of paper furniture as in playhouse style and arrange things in the room...as for curtains...I don't have them because fabric dust is everywhere and they just collect it...just my preference. Good luck. It is an awesome space...I would be thrilled to have such a large room.

I havent seen an update on this so Im going to give my 2 cents. Take some gridded paper and carefully measure your room and all your current furniture. Draw the room layout on the grid and cut your furniture pieces to size. Place them in your current arrangement and note all your issues. Here a tight spot, there too much sun. Rearrange to find the best way to integrate other ideas you have. You can cut out furniture you might want buy and see how it works too. You can do just a top down view and also do a straight on view of 1 or all your walls. Find the best arrangement on paper, noting how much room you need to move between everything first. I find it makes it so much easier to picture how it might work in my head.

I totally understand getting a designated room of your own for sewing and crafting then not decorating or organizing it! I moved into my daughter’s old bedroom when she moved out in her early 20’s now she’s turning 40! What I did wrong was just move in, I didn’t even take time to paint! Big mistake, I’m still looking at her stenciled star ⭐️ walls and ceiling! As I kept adding more different types of crafts it became a big jumble of mismatched furniture and mess. I am determined to make this space more enjoyable by moving it ALL out, then paint (bright white is my suggestion for you and my own plan, because you have so many colorful things and fabrics so let those shine and don’t outdated your wall color and have to do it again) then I’ll move back in only the things I use often! This will take some effort to decide on what crafts and those accessories go to goodwill, sell, and throw away. In the end since I’m retired now I hope to enjoy many years of sewing and not stressing! Can’t wait to see your wonderful finished room! ❤

Here are my other thoughts….the long dresser needs to have storage going up. Your husband might put either shelving above or cabinets big enough to put your sewing items from the floor into it. I would also consider opening space in the closed cupboard to put your machines not in use. The closed cabinet and the Frankenstein one need to be put together. Your husband could add other pieces to make them the same height and then I would paint them. I’d go for something light and paint them with a gloss paint so it’s easier to clean. I’m a put fabric in closed areas to protect them gal and wonder if you kitchen cupboards added above and below at the end of the room might help you. That long dresser with those thin drawers might be a great place to organize the sewing tools and materials. Sometimes having containers can help but also limit us when we want it to be in the same. The scraps are in a place far from your sewing machine. Have you thought about scraps organized closer to you perhaps on that shelve in the corner. You have a lot of fun things that you use. I know I am more inclined to use it if it is easy to get to and I don’t have to move mountains. I think that both cutter machines are in places that need to change so it’s easy to use. Most importantly go up with your space. You have a beautiful space. I can’t wait to see what you do with it.

I love the size of your space! I’d paint the furniture all just 1 or 2 colors to make a cohesive look. As others suggested, just seal the wood on your cutting table. It’s a beautiful piece of furniture, and the wood tone will warm up the space and give a nice contrast to the painted furniture. Personally, I like having a printer to print off patterns, templates, coloring pages, etc. If this is the “family” printer, just move it to right inside the door so others don’t have to invade your space to use it. The furniture the printer is on looks quite functional- maybe just needs a fresh coat of paint?

Great ideas! I love the idea of staining or just sealing the cutting table. Unfortunately, I guess (according to my husband), the wood is different for the different parts and if we stain or seal it, it will take on different colors and look weird. He could explain it better, I am sure! LOL! When we started designing and building it, I wanted to paint it. I don't think I realized how nice it was going to look or I would have had him use better wood. Love the other suggestions! Thank. you so much!

Empty the room. Get rid of all furniture you do not want. Purge excess supplies if necessary and put like items together. Measure the room and furniture pieces you are keeping and either use graft paper or a design program (free ones are available on line) and design your room. That’s what I did and it was immensely helpful at getting me unstuck. Good luck❤

#1 I like gray walls, but maybe a lighter gray. You could paint them white also. You have to film in there, so whatever works best. Psychologists say yellow is supposed to be a good color for creativity, but I never do it because yellow is not a color I'm drawn to. What's your favorite color? You have a yellow shelf, a salmon cart and a turquoise cart -- any of these?? #2 Cover the bottom half of the windows with a curtain so you can see out when you are standing, but no one sees in at ground level. I used top down bottom up cellular shades and can adjust the height as I need for privacy. I can raise them at night so people can't see in at all; I can lower them during the day to see out, but no one can see below my shoulders, etc. #3 I prefer to set up my sewing area in an L and I have the same Janome machine and sewing table. (I actually have another table between my sewing table and the window so my chain piecing piecing and quilt don't fall off the table. The L helps support the extra weight as the quilt gets bigger. If you need both machines set up, what if you turned both of your machines so the backs are facing each other perpendicular to the window and put that farm table that we only saw the legs of between them? Or you could offset each machine in line with the window (one facing the window and one facing away from the window) with the table between them, thus, making the table your L for both machines. #4 On my sewing L I set up my cordless Panasonic with a wool mat. Easy pressing of the block as it is constructed without getting up. I no longer have a conventional ironing board. Instead, a piece of plywood 30" X 48" covered with batting and sturdy material makes such a nice ironing board big enough to press yardage and the quilt as it starts to grow. That is set up on my cutting mat table with my Oliso iron. You have a great table for your cutting mat with room for the ironing board also. Or you could put the ironing board on top of the big dresser. #5 Everybody always seems to get white Ikea bookcases, but I opted for metal shelving. It's six shelves high (78" high X 18" deep X 48" wide) and the bottom shelf is up off the floor. They even have rollers!! (They don't interfere with the baseboard heating, but that's on the window walls anyway) Put 3 or 4 of those on the back wall to the right of your sewing machine. I fold my material to fit in 13" bins from Target and they are placed on these shelves on end so I see the fabrics. Your extra sewing machine, serger, etc. can go on the floor under the first shelf. #6 Maybe move the armoire to the other side of the room and store your quilts there. Seems deeper than that "franken" one you currently have them in and you could maybe fold them better as well as protect them from the sun. These are my initial thoughts. Maybe you didn't want so much input. If so, just ignore me.
@SewtheDistance

Oh my goodness! What wonderful ideas! You are so smart! I am not going to ignore you at all! LOL! Love it! I need you here to remind me of each step. ❤️ LOVE these ideas and I love that you numbered them. Thank you! 1.) My favorite color is orange. I had an orange room in my old house and my husband as all but forbidden me to paint anything else orange. 😂 I may be able to get away with a light peach color. We painted our kitchen yellow last year and it was so bright, we ended repainting it a lighter yellow. I may be forbidden from using yellow again, too. 😂😂😂 Love the idea, though! I am leaning towards a light green, but right now, nothing is completely off the table. White would work best for filming, but it is so boring. 😂 2.) Love this idea! Our house is way back so I am not really worried about people seeing in, but I do get reflection from the windows with filming. This would definitely help. Great idea! 3.) Great idea with placement of the machines. I didn't mention this in the video, but I do move the table, the machines, etc. around when I sew. Great minds think alike! 4.) Love this! I have a big pressing surface beside the cabinet, but I love the idea of having the pressing surface on top of a dresser. Thank you! 5.) LOVE this, too! The closest IKEA is two hours away. I really don't want to make the trip there, especially since I will either need to take a truck or a UHaul. The cutting table is on wheels and I love it, too. I didn't really think about getting shelving on wheels. This certainly would solve a lot of the concerns about the heaters. Great idea! Thank you! 6.) As much as I love my FrankenFurniture, I am realizing it probably has to go. It is big and clunky. Sigh. I do love it, but it may have to be sold. I have just under 100 antique quilts. It is time to sell some of them, too, I think. I have them all over the house--on beds, under beds, on ladders, in baskets, etc. Time to cull them out, I think. I will keep my favorites but probably sell the rest. Thank you so much for your help! Love, love, love your ideas!

I would get rid of the the book shelves that are falling apart. Your husband looks very talented and I bet he can build you huge shelves on that big wall. I don’t know that I’d do curtains - If so maybe do lace ones so the outside light can come through. I would stain the big cutting cabinet he made. I would also go through the entire room and down size - I’d donate things that i have not used and I know I won’t use. You have a really nice room.

OHHH! LOVE the idea about the curtains! Thank you! I do need to declutter, although I feel like I do that all the time. LOL! I have to get serious about it though. I hold on to too much stuff in general. Unfortunately, we can't stain the cutting table because when my husband built it, I was intending to paint it, so he used poplar for a lot of it. There is also a mix of different woods (he could explain it better) and it would stain inconsistently. Now that I have it, I wish he would have used higher-quality wood and he would have if I said I wanted to stain it. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Oh well. Paint it is! Now to just do it! ❤️

Wow what a great space! I can totally relate to being over whelmed with what to do. (I'm trying to reorganize my craft/sewing area.) My thoughts/suggestions/ideas- 1) Move out the printer and any other things not used in there. 2) I like the franken furniture piece but is it really being used in the best way? Is there some place else you could use it to display things? 3) I think the other large cabinet might be better used for storing big things like your quilts that need binding and the quilts on the franken furniture. The little stuff is just getting lost in it. 4) What about just putting up valances. Make them from quilt blocks- like a table runner. 5) Get some graph paper and measure your furniture/shelves and make little pieces to represent each, then draw out your room on another piece of graph paper. Rearrange the pieces to get ideas of how you want to move things. Save pictures of all the layouts you like so you can decide which will work best. 6) It is possible to move/reconfigure baseboard heat- for example if you put built ins along the longest wall the heaters could be shortened at the corners of the room to run in front of the built ins. (I don't know how much that would cost. Is your husband handy with that kind of system?) Good luck with your room beautiful.

Thank you so much for this! What wonderful suggestions and ideas! I love that you numbered them so I can respond in order, too. 😍 1) YES! That printer has to go! Totally agree! 2) I agree with this, too. My husband hates this piece of furniture, and the rest of the house is very small. This room is actually the largest in the house. I am considering selling it. 😬 3) Love this idea! YES! I need something like that. I also need to just bind the quilts and get them back to their owners! 😂 4) Ohhhh! Quilt Block Valances! I love it! Thank you! Great idea! 5) I did this with an addition we put on our old house! Great idea! I need to sit down and do this. It really is helpful! Thank you! 6) We have talked about this, too. The cost would probably be a lot and honestly, it is something I think I can work with. Because this room is actually an addition (we didn't put it on--the previous owners did), it would be a much more involved task than it seems. We are also having issues with the ceiling because we don't know which way the beams run. That is part of the reason we haven't updated the lighting in there. It will require us to take a look inside. We are getting a new roof this summer and are waiting to see inside then, but maybe we just need to cut a hole and look. LOL! Thank you for all these wonderful suggestions! They really do help! ❤️

Love you have a great space, & you are thinking about your future self by having castors already on furniture pieces. My guess is the space is leaving you uninspired because it's lacking the consistency you need to feel comfortable & pooch space lol. Before spending a bunch of money on anything, think about the zones you need within the space. What needs to be next to you for sewing. Same as the great pegboard is attached to your lovely cutting table. After you thought over how you need it to function well and easy for yourself draw the room out to scale, 1 inch per 1 ft is easy on the eyes, include doorways, windows and outlets, do the same scale with the furniture you presently have, make a sofa scale too because it's something you want in the space. play with the pieces, see what feels comfortable to you. While doing so, ask yourself what's working , what isn't. You have a design wall but it's blocked, that is an item you should be able to walk up to for both design or in your down time - use as a display - something motivating wall. The room gets great natural light, but the light is being barred out. Could you choose to have 1 wall be open storage but opt for easy pull across curtains so you can very easily see everything you have but protect everything from daylight? You are feeling overwhelmed with the room and asking others about colors. It could be helpful but what works for others could leave you with a space you don't enjoy. It may be best to paint the room white, allow color to come into the space in other ways. Pick a color you know you can live with & do all the furniture in that color, or if you know you get bored real easy do both walls & furniture white and bring in the color through fabrics for windows and storage wall curtains, pick colors & patterns YOU LOVE, have fun choosing, ps. hope this helps,

Thank you so much for all of these suggestions! It is very helpful! You are so right--I am uninspired in there. Love the idea of zones, especially as a teacher. That is how I would set up my classroom and it always worked well. I am in the process of drawing up the design on graph paper. Because of the size, I am scaling it back. As for the color, I mostly wanted input on the best color for recording. I know I want a reflective color--I may just go with a white and call it a day--but I also know there are other colors content creators use that work well on camera, too. I definitely will get something I love. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Super helpful! ❤️

Where your yellow bookcase and the old brown bookcases are you could purchase cubbies which come in various widths and heights. Above your sewing machine, you could put kitchen cabinets, especially two corner cabinets. In fact, I would put kitchen cabinets all the way around with counters on top. With your baseboard heating put legs on the bottom of the cabinets, which will also direct the heat out towards the center of the room. Where is the most needed.

Yes, jealous of your room - even as-is! I love nothing better than a complete wrap-around counter, with shelves/cabinets below and shelves, pin boards, open space for display above. I'd start the plan with that, wrapping around one side of the room (two or three sides) At least 18" deep, but probably one side at 30" or deeper, if you need it for sewing. Build in your sewing tables into this. Do any of these need to be sit-stand adjustable, or standing height? Maybe. These counters can really chew into the 13' width of room, so put the really deep counters on that 13' wall. Ironing... Make ironing 'boards' like Jordan fabrics uses, custom sized to your counters... Floor to ceiling cabinets / or shelves along the long wall to finish it. Set your design wall on "barn door" castors and a rail. It can hide what needs to be hidden, without doors, but can slide over when needed. The last corner, make into your sitting area - so that has to go by the windows. Love seat, arm chair, ottoman (storage of course), a small cabinet / case for trays and lap surface to work on. More display area goes here. Low book cases under the windows, quilt racks, taller book cases by the door if you just don't have enough space. Your cutting island (so jealous!!) can go on this side too, if it's too crowded on wrap around counter side. Or it can just roll wherever you need it to be. On the cutting island - Add the bar back in, but as a flip up island. Use it when you need the space / counter. (because you don't have enough counter/work space!) It should have wheels, so you can also use the open area as a dance floor. Because... do we need a reason for a dance floor? For the drapes... I love the postage stamp curtains that Kate/ Last Homely house has in her workspace. Will they filter the light enough? You may need a blackout liner too... This would be an incredibly functional space, with lots of room to work; dedicated spaces that are always ready to use; room for two, three or four sewing machines; space for the dog, in the sunshine; a place to relax or do handwork... Now where to put the longarm that we know is in your future. (no, I'm not opinionated! ) Me: Taken over the dining room.... and jealous! (ok, happy I can do that, and happy for you too!)

First, give your husband a 👍👏 from me. How wonderful your spouse supports and partners with you! As for me, I would look around for a set of used kitchen cabinets with the countertop. This can easily be broken up to fit into corner and wall pieces (also solving sun fading). I love the Franken-Furniture strip it and repair it. The high vaulted ceiling can be utilized for storage of less used items by using a pulley system of racks, saving reachable real estate for most used items. Put your machines where you can film easily and take advantage of natural sunlight. My sewing area is a soft buttercream color. I love it. Best of luck and have fun. Your friend from New Mexico. 😊🎵💗

I would prefer to check the machine because in the case it is pretty heavy. Just wondering if you have any experience to share.

Do you mean the sewing machine tables? If so, the one for my Janome came with my Janome. It was a bundle. The one my Juki is currently in is a portable table. It is made by Arrow and I got it from Amazon. My husband made me a custom insert for it. Here’s a link to the table: amzn.to/43UisOl Hope this helps!

Ok here it goes, ignore or listen as you wish. 1) Purge some stuff if possible, donate it. 2)Spring break is soon, hire a couple teens or college kids to help 2) plan meals (crock pot, cold salads, sandwiches, pizza, Door Dash, whatever) 3) dedicate 2-3 days or a weekend for this 4) start moving everything out/or move items/furniture your keeping to the center of the room against cutting table. 5) vacuum or swifter exposed dusty walls and flooring 6) apply primer 7) paint walls something with a Lori Holt vibe; cutting table can be painted last (I actually like current color) 8) Once dry start placing furniture in a new spaces without interrupting the sun rays for the 🐶 9) put less used stuff furthest from you, most needed items closer. I sometimes use tension curtain rods on open bookcases to hang pretty curtains to reduce dust or protect fabric from sun. I'm sure other subscribers will give good advice on storage containers. Have fun!

Thank you so much! Not ignoring at all! 😍 I love when there are numbers because I can respond the same way--thank you! 1) YES! I need to purge. I keep way too much! 2) Ohhh--I could hire someone! Yes! Love that idea! 3 & 4) I could move it to the middle of the room, but I couldn't move everything out. When we installed the hardwood floors in there we had to shuffle the furniture. No room in our very small house (this is the biggest room in the house by far) to put the stuff. Great idea though! 5) I do this every evening when I am done in there--I will definitely deep clean when I remodel for sure. 6 & 7) Love Lori Holt! Love this idea! 8) Pup will love this! Bring in the sun! 9) Great idea with the tension rods and curtains! These are great ideas! Thank you! The comment section has been gold! ❤️❤️❤️

I must say that I stuff things in spaces just like you! I greatly appreciate your bravery in sharing a less-than-magazine-ready sewing room. Thank you so very much for being real! It gives the rest of us hope! But I would definitely paint the walls white so you can hang quilts or blocks or whatever for color. Investing in good lighting - and I love painting ceilings white with a bit of sheen to reflect light. But I know nothing about filming needs for light. I would prioritize that corner sofa or oversized chair for you and your dog. It will make you both happy. Then maybe get a friend who is good at spatial stuff to help you move furniture around to figure out how to make it feel more spacious and efficient. And then, get another friend or two to help you sort and fold and figure out storage for scraps, fabric, and all the stuff we have. You've got great parts already. Just need to figure out a way to stay organized that's simple and easy to maintain. It's so much fun with another person sometimes that it might spark your imagination. Best of luck!

Thank you so much for these tips! Friends helping is perfect! I definitely want Daisy (dog) in the room. She loves being in there but really doesn't have a place to snooze. You are right--a sitting area will make us both happy! 😍 Lighting with filming is so tricky! I know I need a reflective color on the walls. The ceiling is currently white, but I like the idea of a sheen on it. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Hi Kris. I'm drooling over the amount of space you have. First, don't paint your cutting table/work space. I love wood furniture. I would just give it a nice light maple stain then varnish and shellac it for quick cleanings. Next, select one solid wall for your storage units and shelves (maybe two walls). Clean/repaint your 'frankenfurniture" unit. Make rod pocket curtains that slide easily over a rod. Finally, paint the walls a light slate gray and the ceiling a bright white for viewing fabric colors. I hope some of this helps. ~~ Lynne

Thanks so much, Lynne! Unfortunately, I have to paint the cutting table. When my husband and I designed it, we planned to paint it (I had no idea how much I would like the look for wood for it then!) and he used a mix of woods. If I stained or sealed it, it would be different colors. We tried a sample--can't do it. Sooooo, painting it is! I love the ideas for the shelves and my frankenfurniture unit. Amazing tips! Thank you so much!

So blessed am I to have a 12 x 18 room. Looks like you need a full wall of cabinets half open half enclosed maybe with some large drawers. All matching cabinets streamlines the clutter. I got a bunch of white Ikea cabinets and filled a wall with half open half enclosed and a bunch of matching bins for some open shelves. I put a cutting table in the middle like you did. I took everything I had out of the room to paint. Organizing (and purging) into moving boxes I got an idea of the volume of storage I was needing. I was thinking accent color as well but my fabrics and quilts are my color. I got many ideas from others online. So much work but so worth it. I'm retired and I finally got rid of all the piece meal, early marriage furniture I had for 40 years. Love my space so much , have fun on the journey❤️

Wow! Thank you for all these ideas! This is wonderful! I love the idea of a full wall of cabinets. I want to have enclosed storage, for sure, especially since it right off my kitchen and the door is sometimes open. LOL! I am going to take this advice, although I can't empty the room--no place to put the stuff while I paint. The rest of the house is very small. I will have to shift things from one side of the room to the other. We did that last year when we installed hardwood floors, so I have some experience there! LOL! Thanks again for such wonderful ideas!

Chose which of your great unique furniture you want to keep and think about what you can store in them. I like the frankenfurniture with the antique quilts. it's a nice display. I would use the really wide drawers for fabric strorage with KonMari folding. For the rest of the room buy floor to ceeling shelfing units. IKEA Billy or IVAR are very flexible in hight, width, doors, no doors and accessories. Build the selfing around the furniture you want to keep.

Ditch the ironing board and add an ironing/pressing surface onto either your cutting table, or that great dresser with the shallow drawers. My cutting table is two identical dressers placed back-to-back, because I needed every inch of space in my tiny sewing area. It really offers great storage and is perfect for me. I kept it even after we moved and I gained a huge sewing space. This piece now pulls triple duty because we covered Homasote sound insulation board with a layer of batting and cotton duck fabric for a lightweight, removable ironing/pressing surface. The batting and fabric is stapled on, and the backside is covered with fusible fleece to keep the staples from scratching the cutting table. Homasote is also pinnable, and is used by tailors and needle workers to block their work. We got ours at a big-box building center, and it comes in either 4'x8' sheets, or 2'x4' sections. Most building centers will also cut it to size for you if you need something different. Mine lives on the cutting table, and is only removed when the cutting mat is being used. Another idea for your room is to add display shelving near the ceiling around the perimeter of the room. This would free up a lot of the surfaces for other uses. A nice wall color for a quilting studio is a soft, buttery yellow. Or, what about a white walls with an aqua ceiling? We changed our older recessed lighting out for LED gimbal retrofits, due to the sloped ceilings. It allows you to aim the light where it is needed, rather than the light pointing diagonally across the space (and into your eyes). You might also consider a quality window film to protect your fabrics and quilts. There is a really good one called Vista Window Film, which has a wonderful guarantee.

The best way to make Hodge lodge furniture to match is paint it all the same color. (Yes, a big job but it would add cohesiveness to r oom.) Have you ever hea rd of window film? You know, like the stuff you put on your car windows? It blocks the harmful light days that cause fading. You can hire someone or have your handyman hubby do it. We did it in our house 3 moves ago, a new home with immature trees to block Sun's damaging rays. I also concur with the idea to get old kitchen cabinets - install on wall to hide lots of messes. Paint to match the remaining furniture in room. Purge what you know you won't use. And by all means, use that height for storage or hang some quilts up high to add to room. As for room color- paint it white. I look forward to a progress report video!

I like Benjamin Moore Simply White for rooms you want to keep bright-white walls will showcase the rest. It might help to move as much as you can out of the room and start with a blank slate. I love the stuff your husband made and the old cabinet that needs some work. I would just fix the holes, do a light sand if spots that need it, and then chalk or mineral paint it in a color you love. I’d skip the curtains and hang a couple plants instead. The hardest thing for me is keeping my inventory low so I don’t have more than I have space for. I am fairly new to sewing and quilting, and I don’t do it for a business, but I love watching these videos that give ideas for organizing your sewing space. Thanks for taking us through yours-it’s really a fantastic space!

Great space. Think about going up. You have great tall ceilings. Eliminate a few of the smaller shelving units and add, or build up a tall unit so you can get stuff off the floor. Paint the walls white and hang a vibrant quilt on the wall. Make your space about inspiration, not just storage. Just my two cents. BTW, love your videos.
